Vector generator chips allow for the generation of a picture on a crt (tv Tube) the center of the tube is location 0:0. The value for X or Y can be positive or negative and is based on DC current. For a color tube there is a signal running the magnetic pulse directing the drawing of the characters on the screen. There is also a pulse telling when to turn on and off the beams for the respective colors. The tube is divided into four sections. The program runs in an anologe code. That code is sent to the DAC chips (digital anologe converter chip) once the code is turned into a digital location the chip tells the beam were to go on the crt. The rate of movement is slower than a standard tv which is considered raster. Hopefully that helps. Tempest uses a math box board which is the secondary pcb. Star Wars has a special chip which does the function of the math box called the avg chip.

Hello! I have a very similar problem: This bright diagonal/ horizontal line and vertical collapse. But if i check the signals with an oscilloscope (XY mode), there are correct. I will check the DACs and the output TL72s. Thanks!

My game room is basically full of midway games, like every classic MK, i do have some capcom games, but I love Mortal Kombat!!! P.S, Scorpion is the best MK character...... I don't remember what it was but my tec fixed it with a modern replacement and my star wars arcade plays great now. I know you have the same problem because of how your death star does not line up mine was exact same so you either have a broken leg on the same diode you need to inspect for or a bad solder joint but I bet it is a broken leg there is a demo video on you tube of this game showing the death star with same problem it is common.

There is a big blue diode on the main board that is broken it is on the graphics output side of the board. I had a tec fix it for me but it has a broken leg. I had a same problem it is NOT a pot. It is a common problem this one diode on the vector output seems to get broken from removing the board from the machine over the years.

Try adjusting your brightness/dim option on vector monitor to darker. If it's too bright, then, you are able to see the traces.
