What are your ranking criteria ? On which facts are your assessments based ? UNC, Chapel Hill is ranked above Berkeley, this is the first time I ever heard of. How many Nobel laureates does UNC, Chapel Hill, have ? And what is the acceptance rate at UNC, Chapel Hill ? I have closely watched/read college rankings (undergraduate & graduate) for 30 years, and the University of California, Berkeley, is consistently ranked as the top two public universities in the US. While it's a public institution, Berkeley is frequently compared to its rivals such as Stanford, MIT, and the Ivy League. I haven't seen UNC, Chapel Hill, and U of Florida on any top ten ranking (overall or individual discipline) before.

Thomas Jefferson also advised on the creation of University of Michigan during it's inception in the early 1800's. Also has a very large $1.7Billion+ research budget (the largest of the public Universities, should have mentioned) -most students can participate on projects even undergraduates. Truly an academic powerhouse with the largest stadium for the benefit of the students, sorry Texas. ;-)
