Music News - 27 Oct 2024
OK, so I decided to leave the false start and cough in place, as it was good enough for The Beatles, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin so it should be good enough for us. Here was the news as at 27 October 2024, published a week late in typical Phil and Ben style...

Ladies and gentlemen we are discussing 1997
I’ve never rated picture discs. Overpriced and poor audio.
Yeah a few people have said this, but I don't think I'll be playing this version, more for the collection.....
The Rolling Stones track I'd pick for Halloween would be '2000 Light Years from Home' from 1967. Really does sound like it belongs on a horror movie soundtrack...
Oooh yes, I'd not thought of that. It is very eerie!
Impressive.
Great album, thank you!
I thought Flowers In The Dirt was a decent album as I recall. The cover didn't offend .
It's definitely a good album. Ben just has a weird hate of the cover, and the fact he hates it has now become a bit of a repeating thing for us!
Had to listen to the album (on youtube), overlooked at the time. But thanks have now ordered. Need to listen more before picking my 3.
😂 Hi Ben 😂
Enjoyed your list. Not on board with some of the picks but I like the bold choices! May want to consider working on the professionalism a little, like not having a charger and making jokes about stevie wonder
😂 so predictable. In an incredible year for music, somehow Be Here Now gets your number #1
Supernaturals should so be in there!!! Brilliant album!!!
I know, I know, I should of put it in, really great indie pop album....
Definitely alot better than that Oasis album
Definitely, maybe not listen in to any more shows about that band, sorry
Don't worry: they had no new albums in 1998 or 1999 so you can watch those years safely!
Problem is they will release one after this reunion probably?
Donovan as well
Cat Stevens, Gilbert O'Sullivan...
1997 is the culmination of all of the decade's music, condensed in one year. It's the year where Britpop has found its voice as both a fun thing (Be Here Now) and a sincere thing (OK Computer/ Urban Hymns). The last hurrah before Simon Fuller/ Louis Walsh invade
From my historical perspective (as I'm pretty much a Rock historian these days ha!), 1991 signals the change from the 80's into the 90's. The sound is changed. You've got lots of scenes at the top of their game like, Grunge, Shoegazing, Grebo, Baggy, Trip - Hop.
Haha! I told you, 1991 and 1997. Best years for music in the 90's. Spoilt for choice
David Cassidy
David Cassidy , American
1974 was a good year & a few of us enjoyed the music of that era BT!
Glad you were able to place your hands on it 🤚 🖐️
I have to admit, the album from track 2 onwards is enjoyable so far.
I think it would be good to see Noel, Gem Archer and Bonehead all on guitar. A 3 guitar attack re-creating their old 90's wall of sound. Mark Coyle on live sound engineer duties. Mani on bass guitar
Who do you think the line up will be? Got to be Liam, Noel and Bonehead. Probably won't be Andy Bell because he's doing mega with Ride. It'll more likely be Stacey, NGHFB's bassist and Chris Sharrock on drums. Maybe Alan White on drums even, because he's still drumming to Oasis songs at home.
Phil looks like Syd Barrett when he was completely mad.
I am completely mad! 🤪
A crazy diamond, no less!
ATM. I think I would go with some classics, Don’t look back in anger, Some might say, Champagne supernova. Sometimes I go of Some might say but.
I agree with Ben. The seeds of a great album is there regarding Be Here Now by Oasis. But, its like a wild disaster film with some dodgy CGI moments. Noel should've saved a b-side like The Masterplan for it. It also needed an acoustic track in there for variety
@@shoegazer93 I came up with an idea for an alternate track list for the album (with “D’You know what I mean” being a stand alone single and Magic Pie plus Fade-In Out as B-sides) open.spotify.com/playlist/1axuiEWIaJQ1jZMGoFAxAy?si=jRIsqmkESnS86LQGDqrdsQ&pi=e-jHehKBa6QSe0
@@PhilAndBen I just did an interview with Britpop Buzz. I think you'll enjoy it. That will be on my channel sometime soon!
I'm aware white on blonde wasn't their 2nd album....
Tsunami is from this is my truth...so shows up my sheer lack of knowledge and research
Ash - 1977. That's pretty good. Very front heavy, with the 1,2,3 punch of Lose Control, Goldfinger and Girl From Mars. I liked James Hargreaves breakdown of Goldfinger where he shows how complex it really is with it's chords
I don't want to be mean, but I find the Placebo front person's voice grating. That high pitch buzz, I can't stand it.
@@shoegazer93 you can be mean if you like! I agree that it is that kind of voice. Not my favourite type of vocal, but I was just surprised that the music was better than I remembered it.
Seriously though, Radiohead would be a good shout due to their diverse palette over the decades, but you would need to see a GP for depression tablets after an hour of it
Any Prog - rock band like YES or 70's Genesis. 12 hours, only 1 song heard hahaha!
Very true 😂
bro at the end: bľüřġħf
There he is!
I love the introverted sonic bubble of Shoegazing, but I also love the social togetherness and British familiarity of Britpop. I think it's healthy to have both movements. That's why the 90s is my favourite decade for music
That part when you said 1996 was the big cultural party. This is what is missing today; everyone experiencing the same movement. There isn't anything that defines this decade, society is so fragmented now. I always have to fight to show and then get people into new artists. "Have you seen this channel, that channel?" is what we all ask each other. The mutual rushing home to catch the latest act to perform on TV is a bygone era. I feel jealous of what you guys experienced in the 90's
Radiohead - The Bends. Got a bit of everything on that. That would be my number 1 for 1995
1:43 Phil, you missed the golden opportunity to say "I'm sure there's many other R.E.M puns we could come up with, but we're 'OUT OF TIME'
Something different there Ben!
I try dude xx
This was really entertaining!
Thanks!
I was wearing the Breton stripey baggy jumper. That is proper Shoegaze fashion. Curtains for hair and stripey baggy tops
It was the Britpop journalists trying to shut the Shoegazers down again!
Zoom came to the rescue! let's all praise the mighty ZOOM
Sorry guys. My internet connectivity is at full signal, so it's weird
28:46 the regret album cover. Ive got a theory that they made the album cover so bad, because Blue Monday's art work was so expensive that they didnt make a profit from the sales. So I wonder if they intentionally put no effort into the 'regret' cover for that reason? Just a thought 🤔
The Mike Bassett: England Manager song. "On Yer Head, Son!" is the greatest
Coldplay must have a mate in the Eavis family who keeps booking their drivel year after year. So boring and dull and non-remarkable.
I have been listening to Drop Nineteens, Bowery Electric and Catherine Wheel. I hope this meets with your approval. -- Phil
@@PhilAndBen Nice! Approved. How close are you to compiling the quiz mate? I know there's good trivia regarding Catherine Wheel because the singer has a relation to someone very famous in the hard rock / metal world. If you need more questions ,then look into Ringo Deathstarr, Airiel, MOOSE, Bleach and Alan Moulder (the famous mixing engineer) The Cocteaus also count
17:39 yeah was gonna say. Pearl Jam have a new album this year 'Dark Matter' so that would've made sense
The Taylor Swift song has a melody a little similar to 'U2 - Beautiful Day'. Is the guy Ben is trying to find, NEWTON FAULKNER by any chance?
Passenger....
The Beatles are the band you're told you have to like but personally speaking I think they are massively overrated. Brian on the other hand is the 20th century Mozart. The late 60s Beach Boys of Friends and Wild Honey are superb and massively underrated
I love both bands and I agree much post SMiLE stuff is under-appreciated. But how about this: if serious music fans are made to feel "thou shalt worship the Beatles", aren't they also made to feel "thou shalt worship Pet Sounds"? As a result, many people also react against Pet Sounds and claim it to be overrated. I see this happening quite a lot online now, with people describing it as "just average" or saying they "don't get it". -- Phil
Seems like a cool guy. He knows his Stones! I look forward to our encounter!
