No one compares to Buddy

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but anything you play, ANYTHING... is gonna be based in a rudimentary concept. "But I just go RLRLRL"... yes! Single strokes! Even if you break the strokes between bass drum and snare in a "linear" manner, it's all still got a "rudimentary concept" living inside it. You cannot speak a language without an alphabet, because it's got to "come from somewhere". Rudiments are indeed "the drumming alphabet"; each sticking combination elicits a different sound pattern from whatever orchestration you apply to it. That's why learning the "rudiments proper" is a good place for any drummer to start. And if you get down to brass tacks, the ones that are really the most important are: Single Strokes, Double Strokes, Flams, and Paradiddles. Paradiddles are derivative from both Single and Double strokes, so they're almost redundant to mention in this basic list. Saying "I don't play rudiments in my drumming" is just like saying "I can exist without organs in my body". Rudimentary organs and drum rudiments make everything come alive. 😁 For those who shirk the rudiments- Think of them like this: learning a new rudiment is kinda like getting a "new toy" for your drumkit. When you begin to explore the possibilities of the sticking pattern on your drums, you'll be given new opportunities to allow that concept to wend its way into your playing. It's those small things that help you to define your own personal sound. Rudiments give you the ability to play the same fill two or more different ways, and having the ability to become articulate in that manner is akin to being able to converse more freely. In other words, your vocabulary grows. Drumming is definitely like speaking. Here's a link to the PAS site where you can get yourself further acquainted with the rudiments. Buddy must have been doing rudiments, etc. But not sure about the other two. I guess they were linear. Larnelle seemed like he was noodling more than Wekl. Wekl sounded the best to me although buddy was very smooth

My biggest struggle with drum fills is when I am playing in odd time meters, not slipping into 4/4 on the fills. I find that I can groove in odd times signatures, but my fills slip into 4/4. This is something that I am working on currently.

I am glad to have found your channel. I always like meeting other female drummers. I also have experience playing jazz and church drumming.
