Sound test… Superior Drummer 3 core pack “Atlanta Plate”
You talk about being careful about layering sounds to avoid phase issues... for me this video is an example of how to get phasing issues. Either this or your recording is compromised, just listen to the channels going in and out of phase on headphones
This is an older video. The only 2 pads layered are kick & snare. The TM6 that I used to use had a ton of affected kits. Most likely you’re hearing the heavily FX of the TM6?
Very interesting story/journey. Very good sound and a responsive setup. I understand that you are mainly a live playing drummer but have you recorded EZdrummer 3 ? How do you do it ? and if you do, do you do any after processing ? Do you record using a DAW ? Do you record to a click ? Thanks for your help. I am mainly insterested in recording EZdrummer 3 since my module sounds are not so good.
Thanks for the kind words - totally appreciated. I haven't recorded to a click at home since the Covid lockdown, but I've used clicks extensively. When I'm recording here in my studio, it's 'for fun'. I typically record to music or percussion loops, which, like a click, is a steady time. When I do Church recordings, some of those are to a click, but most aren't. At home, I record all my stuff onto an SD card which is in my mixer, and then I put those files into my DAW which is over on my desk....at some point I'll just run a USB cable from my mixer directly into my workstation PC that's on my desk. As I said in the video, I ONLY use my laptop to run my VST's. I do add some processing in my DAW based on the fact that I've found that if I don't, it doesn't sound as 'good' after I upload to YT or Insta - I add a touch of compression, some diff EQ's and a limiter. Hope this helps
Thanks for this Dennis. I just bought an 8 channel mixer (Behringer Flow 8) and will use it like you explained. Where do you find the 'program change' in the menu's? And a question concerning the mixer; do you connect your headphones to the mixer or do you route back from the mixer (out) to the V71 (in) and connect headphones to the 71?
Program change is in the Midi menu. Hit setup -> midi. It’s in there. My headphones are connected to my mixer. All of my sound sources go into the mixer. I monitor everything through my mixer.
Watching this video gives me an idea. Assuming the new hardware isn't any better than the old, How about using the 50X as the master and the V71 as the slave? Someone could save a ton of money by purchasing the V71 module alone, and using their 50X and old pads to trigger the V71 sounds. What do you think about that?
I didn't buy any new pads - just added the 71 module to my rig. The entire kit is/was my 50X kit. Quite frankly it doesn't matter which module you choose as your primary. Just using your main volume and individual sliders is how you blend sounds.
@@dennisagresti9367 Cool
Hey Dennis, greetings from the UK. Another good video, this time on the capabilities of midi. I have been using midi for quite a while and link my 50x, TD30 and SPDSX Pro. I have the transmit and receive switched on so that all the kits change at the same time. Only because for live this makes life a lot easier than fumbling around between songs trying to remember which kit fits with another (although I probably have more time than I think waiting for our guitarist as he continues tuning up lol!). Having got so frustrated with the cymbal sounds on the 50x I have reverted to connecting all my cymbals to the TD30 and assigning the midi notes to both modules - it works great so much so that I'm also gonna go back to some of my favourite drum sounds in my TD30 and do the same. I find it a great way to expand the kit and also avoid trying to sample. I have sampled sounds from my SPDSX Pro into my 50x but it hasn't quite felt right when I play it. I probably need to spend more time refining the sample but midi is just quicker and easier imo. One issue that I have come across, and I don't know if this is anything to do with midi, is that occasionally I have had what I can only describe as a machine gun which lasts for about a second or two. I don't know if that is because of the midi set up or something else. But it happened when I had my TD30, TD20 and SPDSX connected as well as when I changed my current set up. Its very random, I can go weeks/months without it happening, but its not great when it happens at a gig! Any ideas?
Great set up!! I’ve never encountered what you’re describing, (and I’m totally guessing here), but in laymen’s terms, it sounds like some kind of ‘midi stutter’. It sounds as if the midi signal is being disrupted, either by something electrical or a midi cable that’s kinked. If it was me, I’d check your electrical connections. I use Furman power strips for my kit. Furman also makes power conditioners. Check them out. Or get new midi cables as they’re not that pricey. Lemme know if either helps! And keep in mind, it’s a total guess on my side. On the other hand, do you use sound packs? I hear you on ‘cymbals in the 50X sound bad’ (and the hats, too, IMO). Alan’s Vex packs are game changers…Armory & Arsenal. Love his work. I also use Chris’ Vault Vex pack (and a few from EDrum Workshop & Drum-Tec)
@@dennisagresti9367 Thanks for your reply Dennis. Your thoughts on the midi problem are similar to ours in that we did wonder if it was an electrical problem. So I'll check those options out and see what happens. I haven't used any sound packs before as I like to tinker with the modules which helps with my learning of their capabilities. But I've seen plenty of good reports about Alan's packs so perhaps I'll give them a go. In the meantime look forward to seeing more of your videos, particularly on how you are settling in with the new module. I'm tempted but I want to see how they bed in first - bound to be some initial issues as there seems to be with any new piece of equipment. All the best.
@@NeilPeartyyz Something to consider: along with the sound packs I've added, I downloaded kits from Roland Cloud for my 50X, some of which are quite good. What I've learned over the years is by looking at the settings from these downloaded and sound pack kits, I've learned a number of 'tricks' that help me with my own editing. I know I sound as if I'm 'selling' these packs, but I can clearly recall back when I owned my TD30 and began installing sound packs. By then I was probably using Vdrums 12+ years, and my mind was blown by how good the module sounded with sound packs. Still a huge fan to this day.
@@dennisagresti9367 Actually that's not a bad place to start and you're right regarding what you can learn from the set up of those sound packs e.g. EQ, EFX etc. This helps then when building up your own kits. You clearly have a wealth of knowledge and experience which is great that you are finding the time to share with others.
@@NeilPeartyyz Vexpression is holding their annual Black Friday sale now. Best time to try one and save $$. Cheers
Is there any way i can have two working hihat cc on v71
I’ve used 2 hats on my 50X, and although I haven’t done it with the 71 it should work the same. I have the digital hat, and I had a CY5 plugged into one of my aux inputs. I assigned a hat to the CY5. Since the CY5 is assigned as a hat, the module recognizes it, same as your primary hat, so your hi hat foot pedal on the hat stand controls both the primary hat and the aux hat.
@@dennisagresti9367is there a way i can have two different cc hats ive searched alot it seams not ppssible to do
@@dennisagresti9367 yeah i do something similar. I assign the midi note of the hi hat to a pad that is connected to my SPDSX Pro. It works exactly as my hi hat on the TD50x
Nice one Dennis 👌
Thank you!! Appreciate it
Good and useful video, thank you! The new v71 module finally has a natural sound of real toms! The toms on the td 50x are garbage, a tragedy in three acts! If you have a home studio, the td50x with superior drummer 3 is a perfect combination! Then you don't need the v 71! But if you play gigs, you must have the v71 because the toms' sounds are not plastic !
To add more presence and body just add eq, compressor/limiter and a tape simulator to the main outs in the mixer.
Thanks for the tip
I am looking at migrating over to a TD71 but am unsure after reading the user manual if it will support my pads and triggers. Does it support the original digital 14" snare and 18 ride that i purchased as a pack with my TD-50? My other pads are all from my TD-30 which I successfully have been using ever since with the TD-50 not X version. My TD-50 supports my RT-30 triggers as well, but will the TD71 also support them? I intend keeping my original 13" non digital Roland hihat but unsure if the TD71 is going to support this also. The user manual is really brief and provide no detailed trigger information but after seeing your videos and with the experience you have of using these modules I guess if anyone can answer my questions that you can.
Short answer is yes. The 71 will support all previous Roland pads. I have the original digital snare & ride and I added the digital hats to my 50X. When I connected them to the 71, the 71 automatically flashed a pop-up telling me I had to perform updates on all 3. Easy to do, but took a bit of time. Details are on Roland’s site. I also am using pads I bought in 2016 when I bought my TD50 kit. If the 71 doesn’t have the RT’s in the trigger menu (my guess it does), or an older hat, just select other trigger types while hitting the pads…you’ll find a trigger setting that responds best, and then just tweak the trigger settings to how you play. Again, my guess is all your current pads will work, no issue.
Hi Dennis. Do you know if the V71 will work with Alesis pads and cymbals, like the Strike Pro SE?? Is there a setting in the v71 that allows you to select Alesis pads and cymbals?? Thanks
I’m not sure. My guess is yes, the Alesis pads will work. How well, I have no idea. Might be a good question to post on eDrum forum sites or on FB eDrummer groups. All Roland modules only have Roland pad types in their trigger settings.
Have watched a couple of your videos on this v71. I'm considering upgrading from the TD 50x but really am wanting a strong reason why to do it. Is your final verdict a strong yes or is it more of just a want vs need?
Thanks for watching. I can't make that decision for you. I can only tell you how I roll.... To me, I always want the latest/greatest/best I can buy. BUT, this is the first time I've kept my previous flagship (50X). I typically just sell off my previous flagship and dive deep into the new one. There's ALWAYS a 'I miss my old module' period after selling it. But it provokes me to dive deep into the new one quickly. This time, I decided to keep the 50X and midi them, so I'm getting the best of both. That said, I've not spent my usual time diving deep into the new one because I'm having such a blast with the midi'd set-up. It will honestly take me a few months until I've spent a LOT of time sound modeling in the 71 to decide what my next step will be: keep the 71/50X, sell off the 50X and rely on 71/VST's, or I may replace my 50X with the Yamaha DTX 10 because I really like the sound quality and the difference it offers vs. my 50X
@dennisagresti9367 thanks for your reply. I also just bought easy drummer 3 for a Black Friday deal. First time using a vst. Just not sure that I'm happy with this either cuz I do play live occasionally... Oh and also, my wife thought I was playing drums when I was playing your video. I swear we play almost the same way when just noodling around and testing sounds.. 55 years old, been playing drums 45 years. I swear we are like minded. Lol
@@kellyblevins8313 That’s really cool!! I’m 67…I’ve been playing since my early teens. Love it more every day! I play a few times a month in Church which gives me the opp to play acoustics. Love it I just posted a vid on how I use VST’s. There are a few really good dedicated groups on FB…worth joining, as a ton of eDrummers use VST’s. You’ll get great insights from seasoned power users, but the overwhelming majority are finding their way with edrums and VSTs, so be careful with some of the views. Thanks again for watching. Appreciate it!
When Dennis speaks, I listen. Thanks. Looking forward to your vid's about trigger settings and midi-ing modules together. You did not mention the use/need of your mixer (in other video seen) and that is also kind of an audio interface. Do you choose TD50X as midi preset when using your V71? I saw in the upgraded AD2 the possibility to choose 'TD50X digital instruments'
Thanks for the kind words. Truly appreciated! I’ll do the midi video next. I’ll do a vid on my mixer too. I thought about it further and I think the trigger settings has been covered thoroughly a few times: DrumAngle (link below in this video is extremely thorough), Justin/65 Drums has covered it and Luke/Edrum Workshop. Don’t think I can do it better than they have…just search ‘module trigger settings’ and that should do it. I don’t believe I need to assign midi when I’m just using both modules. The midi cable recognizes the connection. I do, however, have to select my V71 in my VST’s in the audio/midi settings. I can actually run both modules and my VST simultaneously because the 71 is connected to my laptop via usb and my modules are connected via a midi cable. That gives me even more sound/kit options.
@@dennisagresti9367 OK Dennis, I also choose V71 but I mean to trigger the right pads when hitting them, in SD3 or EZ3 there is not (yet) a V71 midi preset (there is TD50X and matches most). My question was, do you choose TD50X when using your V71 or do you let SD3/EZ3 'learn' each pad/cymbal?
@@Ludo_AAh, got it. Thought you were saying you were using an ATV AD module. You’re right…Toontrack doesn’t have the 71 listed. I looked to see if my software are the latest updates and they are. But the 71 is very similar to the 50X…14 total inputs including 3 digital usb inputs. When I connected my VST’s, which used to be connected to my 50X but is now connected to my 71, both Toontrack programs ‘recognized’ the 71, I assume because I had installed the driver from Roland into my laptop. Toontrack auto-mapped my pads identically as I had my 50X. I just had to select the 71 as my audio monitor and then I saved it as my ‘default’ set-up. Lemme know if that doesn’t answer your question
@@dennisagresti9367 Yep, that's it Dennis. (I have a Roland VAD 507 and replaced the DS snare with the new DSX and my TD27 with the V71. Also have the digi hihats and snare).
@10:15 the phenomenon you're describing is slight latency when you say you don't hear that immediate "front attack" with your VST setup and you get that from the module. It's something you feel and perceive, but is really because your audio interface (in your case the module) is adding maybe 5-10 milliseconds to the time delay between hitting the drum pad and hearing the sound. If you have a serious audio interface with "very low latency", you will likely feel your VST sounds like you feel your module sounds, with plenty of instantaneous "attack". BTW don't trust what the DAW is telling you for latency based on your sample count. That's all on the front end of the audio path. That's ignoring sound generation at the Digital/Audio conversion which happens in the audio interface. You have to factor that in because it's the major source of latency. Of course, your perception is also dependent on whether you have loaded a punchy sound into the VST vs one with lots of overheads and room ambience. You want a dryer sound to do the comparison. I believe it's well worth it to get your latency down to a total of 5-8 msec, and the only way to do that is with a high-end AI, NOT from the module. You'll get a more realistic drumming experience; believe me - and you'll feel that "front attack" you describe here. After writing this I played further into your video. @14:30 I can hear the latency between your module and the VST being played into it. That tight "flam-like" sound IS EXACTLY latency. It's subtle but I can hear it. There's no doubt about it.
Thanks for the detailed feedback. I’m not using a DAW for my VST’s. I’m using them in stand alone mode. But I understand your point. I’ll reinvestigate using an interface. Thanks again.
I use a 2015 MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM - runs SD3 perfectly
I'm hearing you, and that is why I was so excited about the Alesis Strata Prime kit. It uses VST's and sounds amazing but what killed the deal was the lack of dedicated outputs for multi-tracking. If their next version has the additional outputs, that will be my next kit.
Have you played the Strata? I had an opportunity a short while back. Personally, I found the sounds a bit flat and uninspiring. I also found dead spots on the snare pad. I discussed with the store’s eKit Rep, and he assured me it was dialed in and set up correctly. Great shop…this was NOT a Guitar Center, so I fully trusted his word. Personally, I think Alesis is headed the right way, but I think other kits are a smarter investment.
@@dennisagresti9367 No, I have not actually played them, seems like every music store has shut down so there is hardly any place left to try instruments in person. But really I think I'm of a different mindset. While most people are attempting to make edrums sound like real acoustic drums I want just the opposite. I want edrums that sound just like the drums I hear in popular recordings, most of which are so heavily processed that they sound nothing like the drums that were actually used in the recording.
@@UtwoBed I'd say just spend as much time as possible listening online to as many diff recordings as possible -- music stores & home studios. Listen with good headphones. You'll get a good idea if the module is right for you. I'm more of a Roland guy, but I'd happily buy a Yamaha DTX 10, too, because the DTX10 and the higher end Roland modules like the 27/50/50X/71 have extensive editing capabilities. You can make them sound nearly any way you can imagine
When you combine kits in the v71 and sd3, the time-based processing (reverb, delay, echo) clash with one another. When you played the dry kit in sd3 and then combined with the v71, it sounded clear and clean to my ears. Great videos 👍
Great points. I literally just ‘spun the dial’. I didn’t predetermine which kits to match up. I was just trying to show the ‘what if’ opportunity. Thanks for the input.
I totally agree. As a listener I much prefer the VST or the module but not both. I have done the blending thing and for the reason Dennis described, had fun with that. However, I quickly learned that the module was giving me more up front punch because of the latency resulting from using the module as the audio interface. I definitely hear the latency coming from the VST following the module's sounds. If you get a super-fast AI, that latency goes away, and you'll have all the same fun but with better sounds.
Youre absolute right... thx for the video
Thanks for watching and the comment. Appreciate it.
You get the most amazing tom sounds, I did have the 50X but was not impressed with it compared to the TD27, so I sent it back. Now I have the V71 on order, iot sounds more of an improvement.
Thanks. Keep in mind that you may be hearing both the 71 and the 50X at the same time since they are midi’d. I added callouts in the video, but just be aware.
Hi Dennis. I have been looking at the V71. By the way you are one of the best presenters. The others are to flashy and edited. You are real. I was trying the new DTX10 TCS. AND RECENTLY RENTED A VAD706. I use Spotify to play songs to or UG to practice. I found the mix and clarity with my Bose headphones much better with the Yamaha compared to the 50x. Wondering if the V71 might be better. The 50x was muddy when I was playing a Spotify song. Also thought it would be god to hear feedback from TCS. VS MESH. thanks
Hey Michael - thanks for the kind words...means a lot to me. Sound is subjective - if the DTX 10 sounds great and feels great, don't let anyone talk you out of it. While I seem like I'm a 'Roland guy' (I've been using Roland electronic drums & percussion pads since the 80's), I've owned others - an Efnote, a 2Box and the Yamaha DTX Pro/6. Personally, I LOVE the DTX10 module, especially now with the new V2 download. Truth told, before the 71 came out, I came VERY close to buying and making the DTX10 my 2nd module, but ultimately stayed with Roland and got the 71. I love the TCS pads, too, but Roland's digital pads can't be beat....I believe they're the best, and I've played most pads out there. At some point I just may sell off my 50X and get the DTX10 because 1) I think it sounds very diff from my 71 and different/sound variation is always better, IOM, and 2) I love the sounds and deep editing the DTX10 offers. Lastly, I use Audio Technica ATHM50X headphones --- absolutely love them for my edrums and I also use them in Church when playing with acoustic drums. To my ear, they're the 'best', but, as I'll always say, sound is personal and 'best' is always subjective.
That last bit sounded crazy
mon rêve g une td 30 un spd sx pro et je pas comment faire fonctionner ces 2 machines en même temp bonne soirée
Sorry - even with a translation I don't understand your question
The V71 sounds excellent.
Question for you: how do u have your modules set up to enable both to be heard simultaneously? Thanks!
Both modules are each connected to my mixer via their R/L master outputs. I use a Zoom L12 digital mixer for my modules, multipads, and iPad.
@@dennisagresti9367 considering each drum or cymbal has one 1/4" output that connects to a module, are u using a splitter or splitter cables? Otherwise how does one drum physically connect to two modules even if u use a mixer as u discribed? Thanks!
@@AttorneyDrummer No. My 50X is midi'd to my 71. My entire kit is connected to the 71, midi out from the 71 to midi in on the 50X. Works perfectly. No noticeable lag/delay. I explain this in my other recent videos
Great video brother. I must admit, they 71 sounds much better to my ear. However, i have been using Steven Slate Drums for my VAD 504. I love these samples. They are the sounds i have been searching for.
Thanks for the kind words! Appreciate you watching. I use SD3 and EZD3, but I haven't touched my VST's since buying the 71. I'll be connecting them to the 71 this week and will most likely post a video.
I used to have the TD50, one thing that really bothered me was the machine gunning on the toms, is this still the same on the V71? Cheers
I’ve never heard machine gunning from the 50 or the 50X, except the ‘synthetic’ toms (the processed toms such as the ‘plugged’ toms, the Simmons, 808, 909, etc)
@@dennisagresti9367 Hey Dennis, I remember on the TD50 if you played fast 16th's on the toms, especially the bigger toms, it sounded quite unnatural. A bit like machine gunning.
@@bigangryskies Never found that. I bought the 50 in 2016 and upgraded it to the X in 2021. On the 'natural' drum sounds, first off and most importantly, you need to tweak the settings of each of the triggers to how YOU play - trigger type, sensitivity, threshold, velocity curve type, etc. If you don't do that, you will most likely have far less dynamics and you very well could have more machine-like responses. I can play my kit exactly the same way I play an acoustic kit, and it responds exactly like I want it to
I found the same myself regarding what you said about the attack being not too clear in sd3. Also found that in ez3 it's completely different in a good way. It turns out that toontrack changed the way they sample their kits around the time they release ez3. So newer products are better in that regard.
I didn’t know that. Thanks for the info. Always appreciate getting tips and insights from other players!
@dennisagresti9367 Cool! Another thing that I noticed that improves the experience quite a bit is to use headphones that isolate well. The attack of the drum gets affected by the sound of the rubber rims and confuses our brain. Latency is also super important otherwise we perceive the attack kind of blurred. If you for example record yourself you will hear that when you were playing it didn't sound exactly like that. That's the rubber rims being mixed with the sound of the drums in the headphones. Of course all of this is assuming you use rimshots.
@@LDdrums20 I'm a huge fan for years of Audio Technica ATHM50X 'phones. At one point in my career I was a Buyer of audio gear --- I had the luxury of trying out dozens & dozens of headphones and in-ears, from $20 budget types up to ones costing up to $400. For my ear, and my style, my 50X's are the best - for me, as 'best' is always subjective. I do still own a handful of in-ear models, but for edrumming, I always turn to my 50X's
I have my V71 ordered, waiting on it to get in stock in EU. I have a TD50X and I agree with how sound changes over time, I love eDrumWorkshop kits, they're fantastic and they really filled a bit of a void in the TD50X for me. A lot of people hate that Roland sound that TD27/TD50 has. But one day, I just felt a bit bored of the kits from Luke and started playing some TD50X kits, fell in love with them again! Got addicted to using them, then after a while I got bored, went back to eDrumWorkshop kits and it just makes you more excited to play again... it feels new all over! I imagine it's the same with the V71. From demos I've heard, I found the cymbal demos to sound a bit more natural as well as toms. Have you downloaded many kits from the cloud and do you think the cloud kits are higher quality to justify subscriptions? You're tempting me to keep my TD50X but I really wanna sell it to recoup the costs as I bought the new digital snare too lmao
My initial intention was the same as you - sell my 50X to recoup my costs. But a few drummers on FB recommended I try midi-ing both together. That idea intrigued me, and I must say, I'm having a blast mixing the new 71 kits with many of my faves from my 50X. I have 6 diff sound packs on my 50X - 3 from Vex, 2 Edrum Workshop and 1 Drum-Tec. They're all different. I also have about a third of my 100 kits 'stock' Roland kits, but I constantly cut/paste pieces of kits together, so at this point all 100 kits have been highly edited and mix/matched. On my 71, I've only downloaded some free 'legacy' TD50/X/TD30' kits Roland offers on Cloud. At this point I don't have a need to add others, nor do I want/need SoundWorks, as I still have so much exploring to do with my midi set-up. I haven't even used SD3/EZD3 since getting the 71, so connecting my laptop to the 71 will be next.
@@dennisagresti9367 Gotcha! I'm hyped for my setup but the first thing I will do with a new module before diving under the hood is to see what default kits they have on the module, then upload some free ones with the free 6 month subscription to SoundWorks you get after purchasing the module. Well... Now that I think about it, I don't know if it's only free with a purchase of the VAD716 kit or does it come with the module too! Guess I'll find out :D Did you get some code for soundworks with your module?
@@Zursen Yesf, I have the code. I played a DWe kit in a local shop a few months ago for a bit, so I have some hands on with SW. I own SD3, EZD3 and some expansion packs. Honestly, I’m 110% satisfied with my VST’s and I just have no need or desire to add SW to my laptop. When I want/need a VST, I have what I need.
These drums all sound fabulous but i prefer PMP cymbals more than anything i have come across that being the td 30 and 50 .
@2:47 - well said. The V71 is not at VST level of sound quality, but agreed that it is a solid step up from the 50x in quality and in depth.
Are you going to post a video with the expansion kits like DW 50th anniversary?
I haven’t downloaded any of them yet. I’ve heard them online, and to my ear they’re not worth the money.
@@dennisagresti9367 Yes Dennis, but 'online' and in 'your own headphone/studio' ...😊
@@Ludo_ATouché!! And true, and maybe I will someday. No need to now. I haven’t even connected my laptop/VST’s to my 71 yet!
I've also been playing vdrums since the td10. The 71s sound pretty convincing. Great video!
Thanks! Appreciate it
Maticus!!!
@stevescutti8463 YES, sir. It is I of whom you speak.
@ 🤣🙌🏻👊🏻
Amazing content superb work the thing is yes vst have come a long run but the can replace a Roland especially high end module the durability of their hardware is amazing pair that with the endless optimization the you can get especially in the high end kits and the levels of latency compared to a vst program or a kind of vst module just like the mimic pro Roland maybe they pricey but especially in the high ends kit's the have no competition in any aspect the good news is now we have so much good mid range electronic drum kits especially compared to what we have at that category 10 year's ago and maybe this is where the sweet spot is going to the future and maybe this is where Roland should pay more or even attention that the pay for their high end line up of their v drum's.
Thanks for watching and the comments. Appreciate it
I love your content. IMHO, the Pearl Mimic pro is like a VST in a box, whereas the Roland is not. They are very different from a platform perspective. The PMP editing is like a studio/VST, where you edit microphones in the virtual studio. With the Roland you edit sounds, so to speak.
Thanks for the kind words. I researched the PMP for YEARS....came VERY close to buying one a few times, so I know exactly what you're talking about. High regards for that module. The thing that held me back is I use VST's when I want 'real', and I have my VST set-up (finally) dialed in so I have no noticeable latency and it sounds great to my ear. I actually cut out a segment of this vid where I talked about the Mimic, but decided to keep this focused on the 71/50X. All that said, I also came VERY close to buying the Yamaha DTX Pro X, and truth told, I think at some point I'll swap out my 50X for the Yamaha. 1) the PMP is discontinued...Slate is focused on other things and 2) to my ear, the Yamaha X has some of the best real sounds in a module I've ever heard. I owned the original DTX Pro, so I'm very aware of its' sounds....the X is the big brother of the Pro, has midi in/out, and Yamaha just released a V2 upgrade. IMO my 50X, while I love it, is too close to my 71 --- and that's how I thought about the PMP: it's too similar to my edited 50X in many ways, whereas I think that having a combo of a flagship Roland and the flagship Yamaha midi'd together will provide me a HUGE palette of sounds and textures to choose from.
All sounds are freakin great to me, not sure what the anal hype is about!!!!!!
I tend to agree with you. BUT, I understand that sounds are subjective. If I'm honest, most days I leave my kit after playing a while and think "this sounds freakin' amazing...", while occasionally, other days I leave the kit and search for other sounds --- a diff module, a new VST expansion, sound packs, etc. Now that I have this set-up of 2 modules midi'd, AND I own SD3 & EZD3, I have my hands (and ear) full for quite a while
Thanks for posting this. Interesting sounds with the combined modules. It’s a great time to be a drummer!
Thanks! Really appreciate it. I’ve used 2 modules for many years, but never 2 flagships, and I’ve never done the full kit via midi as I now have. This set-up is a whole new beast! Super satisfied with what I’m getting.
Using an e kit really seems to be the best way to get the most out of SD. I don’t have the patience to program on the computer and using the keyboard doesn’t give you a realistic performance. May need to get a decent kit to add to the studio.
Very nice Dennis!
Thank you!
THURSDAY November 7 HAPPY Birthday party 😊
Great review and playing, thanks...
Thanks! ...and thanks for watching
How to Connect the spd-Sx to the ead10??
I always used a mixer and connected all my devices to the mixer.
That’s als a great way to access the training features from lower modules that Roland drops on the 30 and 50 models.
Hey Dennis, Thank you so much for your videos. I was able to get a V71 I want to link it by midi to my TD 50 X do you have a video that might walk you through that process the manual is a little vague I’ve never done anything like that before, also do you know if the V 71 will record longer than 30 seconds when you’re drumming along to a song I play songs through my phone their drumless tracks but it only records me playing about 30 seconds and then that’s it. It says temporary I don’t know how to change that within the module or if you can and the manual once again doesn’t say anything about it, I’ve sent a email to Roland but have not got a response yet I thought I would ask you about it. Thank you again for any help you might be able to give me.
Thanks for watching. I don’t have a video for the midi connection, but it’s straightforward. I have all my pads connected to my 71. I have a midi cable going OUT if my 71 to midi IN on my 50X. That’s it. I did turn off my ‘program change’ control in both modules midi settings, so I can change kits, but I think everything else is already set up. My 2 modules run into a Zoom L12 mixer, and that’s where all my sounds and recording is done so I have no experience recording inside the module. Maybe post your question on the V71 Facebook group or Vdrums forum
@@dennisagresti9367 Thank you
@@johnfrith7884 Also adding to Dennis reply. Be careful about the midi notes being on or off. By that I mean that I also connect 2 modules but I don't always want a 'sound' from my TD30 to my TD50x. Sometimes I have set up a drum sound that I like in the 50x e.g. a tom sound and got a random sound coming through when I hit the drum. It turns out that it is coming from the respective drum on my TD30 because the midi notes on both modules are turned on on that drum on that particular kit. So you just need to remember to turn the midi notes where that situation arises. Hope that helps
Sound unbelievable ❤ I think it’s amazing that you get that through using both modules. Now I need to really decide which of my lungs I need. Thanks for the great video 🙏🏻👌🥁
😃Thanks for watching! Yes, they’re not cheap, but I’ve been using Roland drum gear since the 80’s and not one piece has ever failed me. Ever. It’s an investment
@@dennisagresti9367As a Roland user for many years, i teach on roland kits (as well as acoustic) and habe always admired their reliability and quality. I think people just don’t get stuck into the settings enough as it can vastly improve the feel and sound of an E kit. The school where i teach have the TD9 since 2007 and about three or four years ago got a td17Kvx. The school are currently talking to a sponsor and we may be getting either the td50vii or the v713. I‘llkeep my fingers crossed 🤞🏻
@@GSA_Drums Agreed!! For years I've been a huge fan of using sound packs from Vexpression, EDrum Workshop & Drum-Tec. Just seeing how they tweak the settings can teach you how to create your own sounds, along with using the copy/paste options.
Got it dialed in even in mono.....would love to hear the stereo version. Yes, you have the response set up perfect it seems!!! Great job and great playing feel!!
Thanks for the kind words! Truly appreciated.
A lot of money vested but Roland last forever practically
running a td50 and td27 thru sd3 as i have a huge 7pc a2e kit with all the latest roland cymbals. interested in the v71 and new snare, just cause i like to have the latest stuff, although i don't know how useful this upgrade will be for me since i run vsts after being unimpressed with the td50's limited/junk sounds...i love the snappiness on a module but i'm not a fan of messing around with editing sounds. for my style sd3 d&d is where it's at but still i'd love to try the new gear to see how it stacks up.
Personal opinion, and you can take it as my own use case: if you don’t want to menu-dive in a module and your usage is more with SD3, I see no value to upgrade. I’m the opposite. I own and use SD3 & EZD3 occasionally…but I spend a ton of time under the hood of my modules.
It actually sounds worse with the blend.
'Better or worse" sounds are subjective. I like it, and that's why I posted it. No such thing as 'right or wrong'. I love exploring diff sounds and trying 'why not' situations
Great video! Thank you. One observation on your microphone. I believe the diaphragm is damaged or loose from the capsule. There is a noticeable clicking sound during transients and plosives.
@@drumdude68 Thanks! It’s been mentioned a few times. Noticed it after posting. I had my mic facing the wrong way. I’ve posted 2 other videos since and I think the issue is ‘fixed’. Thanks for watching
try adding bongos or conga to just the hihat. thats always fun! man i wanna pull the trigger on the v71!
