And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson, Peter Parnell and Henry Cole [BANNED BOOKS]
"And Tango Makes Three" has been challenged or banned in numerous schools and libraries across the United States and other countries. The book has faced multiple challenges in Texas school districts. For example, in 2006, it was challenged in the Shiloh, Illinois Elementary School District, and in a school district in Lubbock, Texas, for its depiction of a same-sex relationship. In 2022, Florida passed legislation that affected the availability of books like "And Tango Makes Three" in school libraries. Specific districts, such as in Escambia County, have faced challenges over this book.In 2008, the Davi...

    And Tango Makes Three is on Internet Archive, so anyone with access to the Internet Archive can see it. That is where I read it. It is a delightful book. The people who want to ban it don't want their kids seeing it and asking awkward questions. It is just about two penguins raising a chick... the problem for the small minded is the two penguins happen to be the same gender, these are probably also people who believe that a pair of penguins would have journeyed all the way from Antarctica to the Middle East to get on Noah's Ark!

    This is the second book from the Booker Long List that I did not finish. Although there was beautiful writing, it was static and I was not engaged in the hearts and struggles of the characters. I also stopped about 1/4 of the way into THE SAFEKEEP, for many of the same reasons: I was not touched by the characters and did not want to spend any more time with them. MY FRIENDS continues to have my vote. I couldn't stop caring about the destinies of the trio of friends.

    "How is it possible to perceive this potential, the beautiful irrealis mood, in the endless space of a few moments?" It's a divisive novel. I loved it. It's extraordinary. It's almost made up for Praiseworthy not being Booker listed. I was really touched by the characters. The snapshots of prose reveal something, like a photograph does, held in a moment in time. I want it to win. It's made-up for the YA feel of Wild Houses.

    I think Percival James is a clever writer, not a great one. This is based on my reading of a half dozen of his novels; all were entertaining but forgettable. JAMES is a little different, because of its origin in an American classic. While i anticipate it will win the Booker Award, i do not think it is the best book nominated. MY FRIENDS is a greater novel. (I have not read the entire list.)

    Oh boy as a political centrist living in Florida that wants to read everything and loves some of these authors… I have to disagree with you. Books should never be banned from the general public, but parents should have the right to keep inappropriate content from being pushed on their kids. Not that I agree with all these books being selected but there is a big difference between a book truly being banned, and being kept from children on a public level. Right wingers are not the villains you seem to think they are. If a parent finds content inappropriate for their child that is within their right to determine that as it’s a parents job to raise and protect their children. It’s the same as not letting a child see an R rated film. That isn’t censorship. I agree parents should teach their children to understand and accept different points of view, but that doesn’t mean they should trust the state to do it. I don’t trust the state to do it, and honestly with your criticism of the state I don’t see why you would either. I mean no disrespect but this one got me a bit heated.

    • @Rainierbooks
      @Rainierbooks 29 дней назад

      As far as I understand parents have the possibilty to let their own kids not check out any books without their consent in most school counties and their libraries. What I also say in the video is that there are a few people (I mentioned two of them) who have challenged hundreds if not thousands of books (have they read them?). Of course, nobody does 5-12 year old kids to read books with very sexual explicit content. However, books have been banned from school libraries just because they mention LGBTQ issues or characters without them getting sexual. The childrens book "And Tango Makes Three" by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell deals with two male penguins living in Central Park Zoo in New York. They are given an egg to raise together. The book is about family, love, and inclusion. In Texas, "And Tango Makes Three" was one of the most challenged books, in Florida, it was removed from school libraries as well as in Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and North Carolina. In NC it was removed, but then reinstated after review. I saw this great video about a conservative (old school) Republican politician who had to deal with 97 books being challenged in his county. He started a project of reading groups with teachers and parents - they had to read ALL of the 97 books, discuss them and make final recommendations about the challenge: 95 of the books were cleared by the reading groups, 2 were taken out of the libraries. This is a very heated subject of course, but I appreciate that we can discuss it.

      A bit more than 1,000 are. Look at www.cbsnews.com/pictures/the-50-most-banned-books-in-america/ and a lot of other sources. I understand that not everything is suitable for little kids or K12, but it is not up to a few persons to decide which books are not suitable for thousands of kids. There is one Republican politician in the South who had 97 books challenged in his county and he set up reading groups of teachers and parents who read all 97 books and discussed them. Finally, these groups decided that only 2 of 97 challenged books were not recommendable to schools. 95 got a pass. That man said that we cannot exclude viewpoints and other versions of life from schools and that it is essential to learn about other viewpoints in order to become a better person. Strictly religious parents have in most counties the option to opt their kid out from freely using the school library. They don't have to ban books for the whole school if they think that their child might suffer from a different viewpoint.
