We live in San Diego, my husband took me to Tijuana to shop, eat and wander. We ordered margaritas and food. When they brought the margaritas there was a roach on the rim - THE RIM - of the glass. Ok lets go ...I'm not hungry. To this day its a pretty vivid memory and its been more than 20 years.

The ship stopped because Catalina Island is only a 45 min ferry ride away from LA. They basically just parking in the ocean to give you a full sea day.

Y’all should research the history of tipping in the US. I took my first cruise in 1986 and the cruise line would let you know to give 2.50 to the room attendant and waiter and 1.50 to the assistant waiver per day in cash. But with buffets and dine when you want things had to change. There were more waiters walking around the pool areas with drinks to sell or taking orders because the tip was built in like now.

Regarding Amsterdam- I didn't realize that to get into the port the ships move through locks. I think the protestors were staged on one of the locks.

Don't be bummed about the astronaut thing - the acceptance rate is .0083 this year. Historically it is very low.

A tip is supposed to be for good service and excellent service-so to feel obligated to supplement their wages isn't really the purpose. But-so many different feelings that it's one of those topics better to not discuss. We speak of a living wage - but the countries where majority of staff are from, it could be a living wage. Additionally- in the US - depending which state you're in - that living wage can vary greatly. In California you pretty much cant live on your own unless you earn 30-40/hour.

I would try that cruise from Mobile. Tipping - I'm happy to tip the recommended amount and prefer that others don't shame people on how they tip. I have educated my kids to not tip at a POS - ie: fast food person counter service - because you're not tipping for service.

We do factor all $$. Like breakfast included, walk to park, parking fee at hotel, uber or ART cost- Anaheim Resort Transportation.

How much are games on the cruise? 35k for a $400 prize is very good usually at least 100k at most arcades. I wouldn't mind if it's pricey as long as I can win the games every single time.

All the lighting and the sculptures - so gorgeous and thank you for taking the time to notice and document that. Some people think Catalina is boring but really if you rent a golf cart you can go up to Wrigley Memorial and some parts of the island. The Inland Motor Tour is also amaxing and takes you to the Airport in the Sky, the ranch and you may see bison on the way. 2-3 days are ideal. Wish we could have done the horseback tiding while we were there but it was all booked. I love your attention to detail with food reviews.
