    Yes that truck is a jewel! You can’t beat the older trucks. Especially 01 Chevy’s I bet the 8.1 is a beast. And the Allison is tough. I am a mechanic with the US government and that Allison is in the M1 Abrams tank and it’s heavy duty for sure. Nice setup y’all have. And finding things that have been took care of is definitely a find of a lifetime.

    As soon as she compared the cost of a professionally built out van to a new truck camper she lost me. The truck camper needs a truck! What does that cost? $75,000? Now the cost of these 2 different "homes" isn't so different. Vans are so popular because they get good gas mileage. If you can live with 8 MPG then get a school bus for even more room to move than a truck camper.

    • @thetravelingveteran
      @thetravelingveteran 2 месяца назад

      It's evident you DIDNT want the video and are a van lifer and felt trigger by one person's personal preference 🤣🤣 Truck campers can be removed, a van is stuck where you park and set up. Trucks have better off road clearance. Trucks can be sold easier if you want to get a different truck. Truck campers are easier to sell, trade in, etc when you are done or want something different. Van builds, especially custom builds, are harder to sell. It has to be exactly what someone wants. Please choose trucks over a giant bus for mobility as well. Easier to get a 4x4 truck into smaller places over a bus and gives you more options for parking and camping areas. Also, many trucks with campers get better gas mileage than that.

      It depends on the truck camper. Some campers have back doors that would be incompatible with hitched trailers or accessories. Some extend so far beyond the back bumper that a draw bar wouldn't reach.

    • @Ohiostategenerationx

    Excellent points. Most of the advantages of a truck camper are the same for trailers. The biggest pro to camper vans is being able to drive away without going outside.

    • @WorldBrilliant
      @WorldBrilliant 4 месяца назад

      True, and we do get that a lot. People want to not have to go outside. Which I get, but for us it's not that big of a deal given all of the other perks that come with being able to remove it entirely. We did the trailer thing for a while, but for full-time living, it was really restrictive in terms of where we could go, where we could park. We mostly stealth camp, and we find some amazing places that a trailer cannot go. So being able to only take up one parking space was a big must-have on our list, as well as the off-road capabilities :)

    I absolutely loved my truck camper. Having the bed over the cab made it feel so much more spacious compared to my van. Although I bought it with the thought I would separate the camper from the truck, I never actually did in all the years I owned it. If it weren't for my health issues and the need for a vehicle without constant stair climbing, I would have kept the truck camper. The biggest advantage of the van for me is the ability to move from the front to the back without stepping outside. My wife doesn't come along on my trips. If she did, I would get a small trailer for her to stay in, so she wouldn't be disturbed when I get up early or stay out late for photography. If I were living in my vehicle full-time I may consider a truck & Camper, I would appreciate the flexibility of being able to detach the camper from the truck in case the truck needed major repairs. If you want a truck camper that does not leak (as bad) look at Northern Lite or Bigfoot.

    • @WorldBrilliant
      @WorldBrilliant 4 месяца назад

      Yeah, you're right, the stairs and accessing the cabover bed can be prohibitive for folks with mobility issues. That's a great point. And I never thought about towing another camper behind the van! That's an interesting idea! And yeah, we had to put our van in the shop once for two weeks...that was an insane unexpected hotel bill on top of the repairs! That was the point at which we started exploring other options. We love the Northern Lite full fiberglass shell campers. Yes. Someday, we will get one of those. Happy travels to you!

    Separating the TC from truck is nice - only if it is important to you 4*4 is nice - only if it is important to you So it is ALL relative & YMMV. Your dime... I had a TC on a 4*4 f250. ( over a 1.5 years I slept in it for 30 days total - so I gave it a chance to prove itself) I now have a self built Transit van 250 for the last 7 years (I slept in it for 25 months to date- so NOT full time - not interested in full time only 3-5 month adventures) & I continue to modify and tweak it to make it just a little bit better - With Great results and it make me like it better. I’ve never been averse to removing the front passenger seat, nor the back passenger seat, nor the trim plastic if necessary. I was into my wife’s new F 450 she had planned to transport RV’s with as a career for awhile, and removing \ storing those items keep them new and goes right back, later. The cooler RV drivers use hotels motels; the CDL drivers are accustomed to the essential need for a bunk out back sometimes. I would carpenter a flat & strong surface and bolt it to the floor, install an aluminum lockbox, beef up it’s lock mechanism (s) and pack things tightly in that. Your RV is impossible to secure due to it’s construction, so you must go with either dummy or real cameras.

Try this, roll a window down lock the doors with the fob. Reach through the open window, unlock the door and open it. The horn should start honking. Install a deadbolt on the camper and use it. If you feel your life is in danger use your bear spray. worry about the consequences later but make sure you are in fear of your life. The cops sure seem like they don't want to be bothered with helping you recover your stuff, that's sad.

    Sorry for your loss. I hope sometime in the future we change our criminal revolving door court system to actually keep criminals in prison and off the streets.

      It's such a tough thing, because I know some folks are in serious poverty right now, unable to feed their families. Desperate people always equal desperate actions. Seems unfair to send a kid to jail for life for making a bad decision at a young age. There has to be a better way, unfortunately I don't think we have one yet.

      @@WorldBrilliant Nobody is asking for life sentences (except in cases of murder and similar crimes), but without enforcing corrective actions, many of these individuals will continue to be a problem. Unfortunately, your statement is contributing to the country's issues as much as those who are breaking the laws that most of us follow.

    You can park in the lobby or a police station in the center of a military base but if thieves want your stuff they're going to get it. The best you can do, and I don't recommend explosives, is not making yourself an easy target. In my case I see it as a thief is going to get my stuff and almost every working solution means I could go to jail like using a gun for home defense or setting traps, even non lethal ones. If I gotta give my stuff to a thief and risk my freedom then there will be one less thief and other thieves will be worried that the next one could do the same thing.

      It sucks to get robbed, but I don't think some tools and clothes are worth anyone's life. I think just some reasonable precautions and insurance will do the trick :)

    In East Chicago, if you don't have an alarm, you won't have a vehicle. Forget the stuff inside, they will either drive off in vehicle or strip the vehicle down to nothingness. OTOH, alarms have been known to go off just because a truck drove by or it got too cold. Alarms are way cheaper then what I suggest below. However, given the money, time and if the law supports it, I'd do the below also. Vehicles are the easiest thing to crack into. No key fob is going to help you here. So the only way to really make it safe is to keep all valuables with you when not on the road. Create a hidden cabinet behind a cabinet, such that you have to open the first cabinet, move a hidden locking mechanism, to get to the other cabinet, that still needs unlocking to get in. If a loo is put on a platform that easily moves out but doesn't move any further then out enough to use, they might not think that anything on the blocked side of that loo in back is anything important. You could always store TP in front of that blocked side. I'd put metal sheets behind all windows and install brackets that will hold 2x6 on top and on bottom, to keep the metal against the window in the camper and the back window of the cab. Keep nothing valuable in the cab itself. I'd be careful about using this while inside the vehicle camping for the night, for fire reasons. I'd want leave the best quick escape option open and use sensor alarms around the perimeter of your camp sight to warn of bears and intruders. Install industrial locks. You could check out tufloc official site to see if anything there makes sense Abloy is very high quality. I would check out lockpickinglawyer to see what he recommends, as he knows what works and what doesn't. Locking bags together does make it harder, but only if those bags are heavy and larger than the opening you need to get them out of. This is why locking the bags together, inside of a metal cabinet and locking the bags to the cabinet wall in back is best. Your bags also need to be made from ultra-high cut proof, slash proof fabric. Redneck version has you glueing 1 bag inside of another bag with chicken wire inbetween the bags, but this is cuttable, but will take them longer. You could also check out loctote or similar site for slash resistant bags. Nothing is really fool proof. The trick is to make it take too long for them to take it.

      Wow, thank you for all of this! You must have experience dealing with A LOT of crime! (If so, that really stinks and I'm sorry). There are some really good ideas in here, and I think we can adapt a lot of these ideas to work for our specific set-up. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this out and help out a fellow traveler! I'm pretty naiive when it comes to theft specifically - this was the first time I've been robbed. Definitely learned a valuable lesson, and I'm grateful it wasn't worse!

      Yeah, you're absolutely right. I'm pretty complacent, having spent most of my life in small towns where crime is basically non-existent. I learned a valuable lesson here, and just wanted to share it with others in the hopes of helping someone avoid our mistakes!

    Sorry, but the logic doesn't compute. After all that, you're NOT going to add a wireless remote alarm to the truck camper(?) Why wouldn't you, especially when there are so many super simple and inexpensive wireless alarm systems available these days. You wouldn't necessarily need an alarm with wifi, but at least an alarm with a loud/ear-piercing siren would be a better deterrent than nothing at all, especially given how theft/crime is on the rise!

      Hey, thanks for the suggestion! I honestly didn't know there was a reasonable option for the camper door itself (maybe even windows, etc? Since we often have it unloaded from the truck...) To be honest, I am kind of naiive with theft and crime, having grown up in small-town Alaska, where it was considered rude and un-neighborly to lock your car in case someone needed to use it! (crazy in this day and age, I know, but it still works that way up there). I will definitely look deeper into a wireless alarm system for the camper!!
