Our Heritage Trees - 2024

Rare trees, like our Tanyosho pine, State Champion trees, like our threadleaf Japanese maple, and old trees, like the American elm planted by the class of 1879, are among the defining features of the Scott Arboretum. These irreplaceable plants mean so much to so many of us. As the Arboretum’s 95th year comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on our rich history and robust collection. Our Heri...

95 Years Highlights Tour: The Pinetum
Is Oregon Grape holly a holly? It got dumped here in Chester County by a mulch truck.
Wonderful tour, thank you!
spectacular! I'm so impressed by this holly collection.
Thank you.
Shame, what a discouraging and challenging disease to content with, I've heard of folks losing their entire collections for not getting on matters soon enough or being oblivious to it in the first place. I'm in a region that has yet been deemed free of the disease, though this summer I came across a very infected plant at a local nursery, so well I guess it's here now! :(
Great video! Do you water camelias during winter?
We do not. Thank you for checking out our Camellia Collection.
Stunning garden!!
Great video!
Great information and presentation. Beautiful camellias.
Thank you for the kind words. The camellias have been delightful this year.
Abi, I love this episode. Thank you!
Thank you for tuning in @JerrBerriW.
This was so good. thank you.
Thank you for taking our camellia tour, @saralee843.
Nice
Thank you for the kind words.
Thanks, Abby. This will be my second winter with my camellia “Pink Perfection” now I know more about the history of camellias. 😊
"Pink Perfection" is a lovely selection! Thank you for tuning in for our tour.
Wonderful!
Thank you for the kind words, @benhelde6898.
A really enjoyable tour and saw a few of smaller growing variety of camelia that I would love to add to my garden. Thank you for your informative camilia tour.
Glad you were able to find some inspiration for your garden. Happy Gardening!
Thanks for the tour, Abby. I really enjoyed hearing you share your knowledge of the Scott Arboretum Camellia collection.
Thank you for tuning in @paulacothren3591.
I grow pebble dish gardens with bulbs of all types.
The next superman! Great vid I’ll use your method for mine this weekend.
I have Beverly rose. Like 6yrs old now. Grows in a large planter because i live at the shore 8b wonderful rose! You should get Stephens big purple!! And my favorite thornless at the moment is Marie Pavre. All bloom continuous without blackspot pressure and ffff fragrance! I used to live in PA 20 years ago.
bravissimo well done sengior
Loved this tour!
Thank you for this AMAZING blessing, and for leading us through the comprehensive explanation or the ofrenda contents. We know that the ancestors are pleased with this gift.
Thank you for tuning in and helping us celebrate this wonderful tradition.
The best video I have seen for planting a B&B tree. This is my go to resource for instructing installers on how to correctly plant a B&B tree. The only difference in procedure that I follow is to dig the hole at least 2X the diameter of the ball. That allows for backfill of a soil/compost mixture if needed. Not all soils are as lovely as found in your arboretum. If we are planting in compacted or subsoil situations it is the recommendation of our state dept of natural resources to backfill with a soil/compost mixture.
Great tour. I liked getting all the botanical detail along with the gardening info. Thanks! Ida Hay
I learned a lot of fascinating things about Maples that I never knew before! Thank you so much for a great tour Josh! Diane Mattis
What about bacterial leaf scorch with oaks going forward? Arborists are not recommending them with climate warming.
Bacterial leaf scorch only affects oaks in the red and black oak group and there are treatments available for disease. We have many oaks in the red and black oak group with very few occurrences of bacterial leaf scorch.
I hope that a future episode will address the impact of climate change on evergreen trees. Thanks!
always love the lunch series, especially the cutting garden!! love the reblooming Iris!!
Thank you for the kind words, @JerriBerriW. The reblooming iris is favorite of our volunteer flower arrangers too!
To determine the correct angle to use the sharpening stone, it helps to use a black marker to blacken the shiny part of the blade. Then use the stone on the blade. Angle the stone so it "erases" the black marker. Flat side of blade should NOT be sharpened. If flat side of blade is not flat, you should probably get a replacement blade. Good presentation.
Thanks for the tip on the black marker, @rhhirsch!
Beautiful arrangements 😮❤
Thank you. Our volunteer flower arrangers to an amazing job!
In response to a question in our chat during the premiere, we have not had an earwig problem with our dahlias this year. Our biggest issue has been thrips. We have been treating them with horticulture oil. Please note to only apply the oil on cloudy days as the treatment can burn the plant on sunny days. We also cut some flower buds because this is where the thrips live.
How old is the tree... 😮😮😮
Which tree? We featured may crapemyrtles in this program.
@@scottarboretum the very first one... the big big one..
I have never seen a Crapemyrtle that big! Wow 😮
We have some large selections in our garden. We also do not top them, thus allowing to each mid-size tree heights.
Great tour. Thank you. Fascinating to see a whole group of woody plants that were never grown there when I was a student.
Thank you for tuning in. We have been having great success with this group of plants.
Now if people ask what the hell am I doing, I'll tell them to watch this video. Thanks, this is the most respectful attitude towards the environment in my opinion.
Delighted to learn you are gardening with some of these techniques. It really will take an understanding of our natural world to appreciation this different style of gardening.
During our video premiere, we were asked how the Arboretum is handling Crapemyrtle Bark Scale. Our IPM coordinator sent this great link about Crapemyrtle Bark Scale in the northeast. extension.umd.edu/resource/crapemyrtle-bark-scale-new-problem-home-landscapes/
The companion planting makes for a very different look for the rose garden.
It really does. The companion plants have really extend the season of beautiful blooms in this garden.
Wonderful video !!! Are the roses still looking as beautiful as they do in this video ? I want to make a long-distance trip to see the roses this week and am hoping they’re still at their peak ! Thank you so much for these lovely videos -they bring the flowers to those of us who don’t live close by and can’t always see them in person ! Much appreciated !!!
Thank you for watching the video. Im glad you enjoyed it. The video was filmed last Tuesday and the garden was at its peak at that time. The blooms are starting to wind down and we have begun deadheading but the majority of them still look lovely.
Great tour. Nice to hear about the horticultural history as well. Thanks
Thank you for tuning in.
The volume is very low and difficult to hear.
Sorry you are having trouble. In addition to turning up the volume on your device, the RUclips video controls also has a volunteer control. Try turning that up as well.
@@scottarboretum I have them both at 100% thank you.
Excellent Video! Do you then backfill the area as it was - or do you keep the root flair exposed to some degree ? Thanks a lot.
This was so informative. I thoroughly enjoyed watching and learning. Please make more videos.
Thank you for tuning in. Follow our channel to get updates when we release new videos.
