Tabletop Toby is a channel about joy and passion for board games (as the name might suggest!). Playthroughs, reviews, reflections, unboxings. From campaign dungeon crawlers and strategic intensity to light bleeps and bloops and just having a fun time.
And some definite silly thrown in because, after all, what is the hobby of board gaming except adults engaging in some fantasy play by diving into imaginary universes and stories. Paxton the penguin will guide us and light our way into new adventures. And just remember: "The only rule is that there are no rules...except in board games."

Alice’s Garden: How to Play & Solo Playthrough
I'm a huge Final Girl fan but that's the silliest thing I've seen, I'm glad I didn't get the Mystery Box
It's definitely on the silly side for sure! 😂 I ended up digging it (grave pun for sure intended). Although I like the grim and silly smash up a lot. But it definitely was a gamble. I like the idea of a mystery box...buuut I don't love the idea of paying extra for something that you have no idea what it is. It ended up good for me in this case, but I could definitely see it won't for some peeps, just like it wouldn't have ended up making you happy. So, good for you being cautious, and thanks for stopping by and taking the time to chime in!
wow that mystery box item is SICK. so much better than the S1 and 2 boxes
Yeah, it's pretty sweet! I might have to figure out how to make room on my gaming shelf to feature it prominently...
So happy i found your channel! You've got lots of playthroughs of games I'm interested in and your presentation is great
This is the way to learn a game……Bravo!
You are the Bob Ross of boardgame playthroughs
Yes, I’ll take it! Don’t know if I can rock that hair. But I could always buy a wig…
Thanks a lot for this. Remember though that when you strengthen a die the strengthened one goes to the same place (eg. exhausted pool) that the original die was dismissed from. There were at least a couple of times when you put the strengthened die in the ready pool mistakenly.
Hey there and thanks for stopping by! And thank you also for noting any possible rules mishaps as I always appreciate that. 👍 On the strengthening - that wasn’t my impression of the rules, so I would love clarification on your interpretation of this and if I’m missing something onthis. Here was my understanding. “Strengthen” in the rule book says you can “dismiss” a die and then immediately “recruit” a die of the next highest strength. So, breaking that into those two subparts - “Dismiss” says choose a die from any area and move it to the training grounds. And then “Recruit” says that you move a die from the training grounds to your dice pool. So, putting the definitions of the two subparts together - I interpreted Strengthen to mean that you could: (1) move a die from the exhausted pool to your training grounds; and then (2) take a next higher one from the training grounds and put it in your dice pool. I don’t see anything in those sections about having to put the strengthened die where you got it from since “recruit” in it’s definition says to put it in your dice pool. But happy to hear more about where you got your interpretation from!!! 😃
@@tabletoptoby Hey, thanks for your reply! Yeah, in the 20 Strong Hoplomachus rulebook, in the Strengthening and Weakening Dice section it says "When strengthening or weakening, the newly-recruited die must be placed in the same area that the initial die was dismissed from." Unless I'm totally misreading that, I believe that backs up what I was saying above. I don't think it had a huge impact on the outcome of your playthrough, though 👍
D'oh! Oh, it's after/under the definition of "weaken." Making it a little buried there. Ack. Even today when I looked at it, I was just looking at the first sentence on "strengthen." Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. I definitely never played that correctly, then. 😳 I'll add a note in video description and a Klingon subtitle. Much appreciated! 😄
@@tabletoptoby Sure, no problem 🙌
This is on my to-get, I heard if I am a solo enjoyer (given my family are not very board gaming), I hope I can get it before my birthday (Feb 17), so I'll work through it!
It's a really great solo game with a ton of strategies to explore. And if you ever work through and start to get bored -- I just got the Bloodlines expansion for it (that is just coming out now), which adds a bunch more leaders and AI opponents, along with more modules to add in. So, adding that will give you a ton more to explore and puzzle through for years to come! But starting with Uprising first is totally great and will give you a ton out of the gate.
1:17:18 I looks like there are 2 leaders in the Shipyard. If so you would have 4 points instead of 2.
You are correct! Totally missed those. Added a note in the description and a Klingon subtitle.
1:16:26 You would only spend 2 credits because the Smugglers are still in Andromeda.
Thanks! I caught this one when adding time stamps also, so already a note in the description and Klingon subtitle added. Apparently, I really wanted to create barriers for myself. 🙄😆
1:16:28 You will only get slotted moon bonuses when you activate both modules. You would have to use energy to get the 2 ice.
Thanks for this catch, Mark! I’ll add a note in the description and a Klingon subtitle. 👍 At least this was one mistake in my favor for this play. 🤣
1:13:30 I love the Assume Command card. Another option would be to move your Transport to the yellow planet then play Assume Command and take the Ion Storm to the Development Office. I can't tell if you have the 2 credits right now. There are so many great ways and strategies to use.
I looked again. You did have Broker of Secrets to use Tactic Cards as credits. It's fun to find these hidden gems.
1:31:34 Here you could have placed in the Yellow Planet and had a Secret Meeting before the battle. Since the Smugglers were still in Andromeda it only cost 1 credit and you have 1 credit on a Moon resource.
Assume Command is so fun! Yeah, using it at the Development Office is a great idea, especially for a sneak development in multiplayer in an aggressive game.
2:01:03 Thank you for the play through. I enjoyed every minute. I know it takes a lot of time and effort. I really appreciate the zooming in. I am looking forward to your next playthrough.
Thank you again, Mark, for your encouragement and support! And also for your help catching rules mishaps. It's super appreciated. 🥳 It is indeed a ton of work between filming and editing. More than I would ever have expected before I started doing this. It's funny...I used to be so judgy when people made mistakes and did corrections in playthroughs. But not anymore! Especially when you're trying to narrate as you play, it makes a huge impact on your cognitive load. I had another playthrough of this that was "cleaner" with less rules misses, but the dynamics of dealing with Unity in that play were less interesting. Whereas I thought this much more demonstrated thinking through what Unity might do and how to manage that. Thanks again! Love this community. 🌞
1:09:39 You did win this battle with a 6. The Raiders rolled a 5.
Thanks, Mark! I caught this before I published when I was adding the time stamps and already added a note in the description and in Klingon subtitle. 😁
@@tabletoptoby This was a very fun interaction.
I am very excited to watch! I just started. I shared with the Facebook group also.
Seriously considering getting Unconscious Mind so this was helpful. Thx!
Glad to be of assistance! It’s definitely sticking with me so far. It’s dynamic and tactical, but there’s long-term planning as well that is rewarded. That combined with the cool theme and great art. There’s a strong possibility this will be creeping into my dreams…er…I mean my top 10! 🤔
Just FYI - 5:38 - The back of the appendix, general FAQ section says that "if you have a repair moon slotted into your Tactical Operations, you cannot use it to repair ships sent to the Scrapyard as they lose in battle. This is because you receive the benefit from Tactical Operations before ships are damaged and sent to the Scrapyard in battle". My first game I actually slotted a repair moon there and played it incorrectly. There are a lot of rules that are hidden in the Appendix vs. the rule book. Not sure why they did it like that.
Heya and thanks for noting that! 😁 I caught this shortly after I posted the video and added a note to both my pinned comment and a Klingon subtitle in that section with the clarification. I wish there was a way to force those subtitles to play for everyone so people would see the updates/clarifications/corrections. Thanks again as I always appreciate any help identifying issues!
@@tabletoptoby Ah perfect! I checked the comments section before noting it but didn't enlarge the description. Thanks for the video and you make great points!
Quick question: at the trading post, when you take the field action, do you have to "pay" the fertilizer or water costs when planting or tending? I view this as a bonus and the rules don't state whether you have to pay the associated costs.
Hey there! On the Trading Post spot, I do believe whatever Field Action you are taking, you would have to still pay the costs. If you look in "The Fields" section of the instructions, it shows the symbol from the trading post and says that it signifies one of the 3 Field Actions. And then it goes into what those are (Plant, Tend, and Harvest) -- and explains what each costs. Since it's the same symbol used in the description of "The Fields," I believe that means that the relevant costs would still apply. It seems to me otherwise that this would be an overpowered spot because you could, for example, spend only 2 fertilizer at the Trading Post and would be able to plant 3 pumpkins -- whereas normally it would cost 9! With the costs still applying, I think the purpose of allowing a Field Action from this spot is that if The Fields are full, you can still do one of those actions...as long as you are willing to pay the additional cost on the left at the trading post.
Thanks for the video. I appreciate your calm demeanor and ability to talk at a normal pace, LOL! I think you'd be good at a rules video.
Much appreciated!!
Just a clarification. At 15:50 you said you had to place the strawberries adjacent to the strawberry that is on the board. The first berry needs to be placed next to the one on the board, but the second can be placed next to either berry. That is answered in a thread on BGG by the designer. He said they can be placed in a straight line
That's a great clarification, so thank you! I'll add a note in the Klingon subtitles for that. Much appreciated!
Thanks for this! Been looking into this game for a while!
There are no rules........except in Board Games. Love it!!
Thanks for this!
Great video. Thanks!
For a Newb this is basically useless..and annoying...
Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to watch the video and leave feedback! I'm sorry you didn't find what you were looking for in this.
It doesn't teach you the game but I liked the quick tips.Gives me a clear direction and there are easy enough I can give players I teach a few tips along the way to jump in. Nice work!
Video name is literally tips and tricks, which quite easily should be understood that you need to have somekind of understanding of the game first
Weird comment
Hey all and thanks for watching!! A few corrections/clarifications (which are in the Klingon subtitles as well, so turn those on!): (1) 01:36 -- I note that developments provide an additional battle die for adjacent regions. They ALSO provide an additional die in the region with the development. (2) 5:37 -- re: repair moons slotted in Tactical Operations -- The way I say it, it sounds like you can repair a ship damaged in the current battle. But Tactical Operations occur before damage from the battle is applied, so you could only repair at that step: (1) a ship in the scrapyard already; or (2) the damaged shield of a ship in the current battle before damage is applied. Those can be the fruits of your loss engine! (3) 15:11 -- re: Tip #8 Module Sneak Attack! -- The video accompanying this part should have had a ship in the region adjacent to the placement region (Maximus Field) because for the second placement there with the raiders, as I state, if it's not your first placement you can place in a region with opposing ships. However, the video should have a ship in an adjacent region to make clear the 2nd transport placement is valid (as normally a transport can only initially place in an empty region). Otherwise, you would need a tactics or ship upgrade to place a transport with raiders. Fighters and other upgraded ships with "Attack" could place there, though, without an adjacent ship. Thanks to those who helped identify these! 👏🏻
I have been thinking about this Strategy since you posted about it. I believe I have unlocked the proper sequence. It would require your battle ship to be placed next to the region because even if you loose 1 battle your ship will allow you to stay. So on your next visit you can go to the region you wish, loose a battle potentially and revisit again. I was always using the Battle ship offensively. This is a great way to play defensively! Thank you again for a different perspective.
"People are like wait a minute what just happened" tip 8 you cheated 😂 I am sorry. Mark is right! You can still do this if you have a fighter or other ships nearby with enough range! Or with tactics or abilities! Tip number 2 develop early. It can backfire pretty quick. In a large group where there is a lot of fighting sure, in smaller groups people can avoid fights and you have spend recourses and turns on building and have a ship less to return to Station for your engine. So getting more recourses can become difficult. Love your enthusiasm and your video!
Thank you for your comment and support! 😀 Yeah, on tip 8, I state the strategy correctly that if it's not your first placement you can place there, but I should have had a ship on the adjacent region in the video to make it clear the placement is allowed by the transport there. 😣With a ship upgrade or tactics card with Attack, it is possible for a transport to do that. But not the norm, for sure. Either way, it is a viable strategy...but obviously only if the placement is allowed! 😂 Your point on developing early is definitely right -- it also could be situationally negative depending on your strategy, placement, and faction. For me, that's certainly part of the fun of the game...trying to identify those opportunities...and costs! 🤔
@@tabletoptoby@tabletoptoby yeah this game is amazing and you have so much ways to score points and play differently each time! That is what makes this game so amazing. My number 1 game of all times!
If you lose the damage ships step is before the tactical ops, so can you actually repair a ship you just lost with a repair moon in the slot?
Hey there -- This is an important clarification, so thanks for asking the question! I'll add a note in the Klingon subtitles as well. The tactical operations step is step 5 in the battle sequence, but damage to ships is step 6. So, you can't repair a ship that was just in that battle. You can repair one that was already in the scrapyard, though, to fuel the loss engine. But in that section, the way I state it certainly makes it sound like you can repair a ship from the current battle. And that is not correct. Much thanks again for asking that! 😀
One follow-up on this -- you can as, confirmed by the creators on the BGG forum, use a repair moon in Tactical Operations to repair a damaged shield on a ship in the current battle so that it's not destroyed and sent to the scrapyard to keep it on the board!
I found your video before your promo.
Ha, same! Was a helpful video, thanks!
Oh I also hit subscribe too.
Awesome -- thanks for the support!
@@tabletoptoby Peter brought up tip number 8. The way it was filmed not having a adjacent transport or ship wouldn't work. I totally got what you were saying though. It takes a bit more to set up. Or going in the second time with a fighter unless your transport has the attack ability.🚀🚀🚀
Hey there and thanks for your note! 😁 Yes, you are right...the film for that section doesn't show a ship in an adjacent region to the transport for the 2nd placement. I should have placed a ship in an adjacent region to make it clear the 2nd placement would be valid. Without a ship in the adjacent region, yeah, for the 2nd placement it'd be if you had the fighter like you mentioned, or the Ace Pilot tactics card that allows you to launch with Attack, or I believe there's a ship upgrade for transports that adds Attack as well. But if you did have an adjacent ship, you could place a standard transport as well. Much appreciated!
Man, that looks great on the table!
Tis a beauty! I had seen the wooden crops at GenCon, but I think I prefer the art on the cardboard pieces because of the vibrancy of the colors and how well they contrast with the colors on the boards.

Ha ha...no worries...there's a plastic bag underneath it that you can't see in the shot to protect it. So, I can affirm that no game board box was harmed in the making of this video. Maybe I should have issued that warning at the beginning of the video. 😄 It's a fun game...really enjoying it so far!

Thanks for the solo play through. Helped with strategy & scoring the trees. 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Great playthrough, thanks. I noticed on BGG that there's an unofficial solo variant by dukefanblue2005 that the game designer has given his backing to. Any thoughts on doing a playthrough of this version?
Thanks for the heads up on that! I'll check that out and see what it's like.
Lovely, relaxed teaching style …enjoyed your teach and play through very much …any progress on posting 20 Strong: Victorum yet ?
Thank you for your kind words! Ah, Victorum...I had been prepping to record that...and then various things got in my way -- some technical issues with a long video I had been working on that I ended up having to scrap, moving, a vacation. But I have wanted to return to it. And you asking is motivating me to do that. I'll aim to record it in the next week and then with editing...maybe get it out in 2 to 3 weeks. Thanks again!
That’s great news …life does have a habit of interrupting pleasurable activities…lol…
Heya! After a few more technical snafus and changing/upgrading editing software (yet again) I finally just posted the how to play of 20 Strong Victorum. I broke out the how to play and playthrough into two separate videos and should have the playthrough out in a day or two. Thanks again for your support! And I believe that my production will now be better with my new setup (although maybe some sound and lighting hiccups to work out...but progress! 😁).

Sooooo good! These are probably the best miniatures I have now in terms of detail. The Sundrop wash helps highlight the details for sure.
Love your explanation style. Thanks. Looking forward to your next videos.

Hello I'm just getting into this series after watching many play through. I'm buying the base game and alliance this week, do you think i should get the covenant as well? I'm think i should get it and start playing with all the expansion?
Hey there! You can only play with one of the expansions at a time. So, either Alliances or Covenant. So, you could maybe start with one and then add the other later for variety. Alliances adds a nice layer of challenge and puzzle on top of the base game, so it's a good place to start. If you play it for a bit and want some other variety or more of a challenge, then I would recommend getting Covenant later. Covenant is my favorite of the two, but it does seem to amp up the difficulty a bit!
Really enjoyed playing through this with you with my own copy of the game. One follow on observation due to the mistake when you chose not to use your signet ring power - as a result of this you also missed out on the ring either / or bonus on your character card.
Yes, so hopefully it kind of balanced out things. 🤞🏻Thank you for your kind words! 😁
I believe you start at day 0, so that first battle step would have included only one baddie.
Hey there, and thanks for watching! Yes, you do start the day counter at 0 during setup. But the first thing you do during your turn (during the activation phase) is advance the day counter by 1. So, I do believe on my 2nd turn when I did my first battle that the day counter was properly at 2, requiring me to fight 2 baddies. Appreciate the double check. 👍🏻
@@tabletoptoby thanks! I was playing the game yesterday and realized my mistake.
I don't seem to have the Arrakis Revolt card in my box. I'm hoping it was a special promo card for you or something?
Heya! Yes, I double-checked, and that was part of a promo pack if you preordered directly from Dire Wolf. After a few plays, I ended up just shuffling them into my deck. Sometimes they make their promo cards available for purchase later. But I just checked the website, and I'm not seeing they have done that yet.
