Are we missing the point? Knife Combatives Rethought - Filipino Martial Arts
Are we missing the point when we are training modern knife or weapon combatives? Especially in modern FMA we often find a large amount of focus given to learning and executing complex drills, entries, locks, disarms and throws.
However we forget that these arts were initially designed for war and in war the point is not to extend the fight, but to finish it as quickly as possible.

    As a martial artist for over 50 years I have been lucky to be open minded and while working met a Sikh who I had regular conversations on the arts of Indian warfare techniques Bruce Lee was right the human body can only do so much with two hands and legs there are many fighting styles in the world worth studying,yet the greatest men are not the ones who encourage their arts as violence but self development You cannot learn if you don’t listen.

And the "middle part" of the stick... that technique is taught in the army, to knock someone over with a rifle (by smashing the middle part of the rifle into the enemies face!)... very effective... Interesting how much of these fundamental sword mechanics are also used in Japanese Swordsmanship martial arts. The principle of holding the sword with the fingers and using tension and relaxation is called "Tenouchi"

      @lighthavenindia you're welcome. I've been researching for years trying to trace as back as possible the origins of Japanese Sword techniques. I figured Shastar Vidya ਸ਼ਸਤਰ-ਵਿੱਦਿਆ would be what influenced Marīcī or where she gained her knowledge and eventually the wisdom made its way into China and then Japan through Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu.

    • @lighthavenindia
      @lighthavenindia 17 дней назад

      @outboundflight4455 it's possible. Though I'm not sure at what point in history Shastra Vidya also started using this grip. My understanding of Shastra Vidya is that they want us to not use the wrist and instead focus on movements starting with the shoulder. Gurdev is coming for a seminar in February so I'll ask him more questions then about this. If you have some questions you'd like me to ask him let me know 😊

    Hello, thank you for the video. If I am primarily trying to simulate a telescopic baton, the usual measurement for length of the stick according to an extended arm changes for me to what is the longest baton I can realistically carry. What is the proper training ratio with 1. stick measured according to the baton and 2. variations of longer and shorter sticks? - I want to get familiar enough with the weapon I actually carry, but not complacent so that any improvized alternative would need long readjustment. I can just change where I grip the stick, so the question is how much time should I spend on this or that grip configuration?

    • @lighthavenindia
      @lighthavenindia Месяц назад

      I'm not sure I fully understand the question. But i think 2 or 3 finger widths is a good measurement for most weapons that could come under the category of a stick. Essentially you need enough to be able to hook or hit with the Punyo. I will also end with this though. Recently GT has started holding the stick with very very little Punyo and his thumb up on the stick. This is so he has more control. I'm not the biggest fan of this configuration though as I've broken my thumb trying this in a stick fight.

    • @thunderwolfcz9499
      @thunderwolfcz9499 Месяц назад

      @@lighthavenindia thank your for the advice, I will hold onto the standard grip as you say. I understand the ideal length of the Punyo and the reasons for it. My question was just this: should I practice with sticks of different lengths? And if yes, how much time out of the entire training session should be given to each length? I want to train primarily with stick length measured according to the baton I carry - roughly 53cm/21 inches, so how much over and under should I train? eg. 40 cm as the smallest stick I train with and 70cm the longest. What would you recommend? Thank you.

    “Maximum damage, in the least amount of time” was what I trained for since starting martial arts 40 years ago. I still apply that principle today. I found that footwork from several different arts(boxing,fencing,JKD, aikijujitsu) help me bridge the gap, and stay in/ maintain proper distance to apply techniques against stiff,retreating, or otherwise uncooperative opponents. Great info, topic, and answer as usual Tuhon!
