Does anyone know what those little circles in the background that have a darker centre are?
Those could be cysts of some unicellular organism. Giardia intestinalis have a cyst that under a microscope is characterized by such halo (a zone of plasmolysis). These could be also some capsulated cocci (spherical bacteria) but that is unlikely. They are too big for bacteria and cocci usually aggregate into pairs, chains, clusters or 8-celled packets (sarcina). Alternatively they could be just some dirt particles that have been surrounded by some mucus.
