I have a 53rd grandfather one of 11 generations of Kings of Frisland in my family genealogy.
Wanting to learn frisian , it's difficult to find resources. Any suggestions ?
In some ways Frisian does sound quite like English, but maybe its most similar for those in the east midlands, Lincolnshire and North Anglia (more or less opposite Friesland). I'm wondering whether west Dutch and/or Flemish is more similar sounding/looking for south eastern English people like myself.
You’ve got the migrations wrong. For people watching this video. Watch out for misinformation
The "Germanic Conquest' appears to have been peaceful, the language of England was adapted and adopted by the British people gradually.

Fysiek. Mooi hoor, koesteren die handel. Nu de oude wijsheden nog heractiveren 😉

"The Old English spoken by the native Britons"??? This is complete bollox.
The thing I'm thinking I'm missing is "Stadsfries", definitely a mix of Dutch and Frisian, mostly spoken around Leeuwarden. "Leeuwarden" in Frisian is "Ljouwert", but in Stadsfries it's "Liwwadden" for example, but I guess it's too much of a Dutch dialect mixed with Frysk.

The Frysians were no vikings. In fact, they fought against the vikings around 800-900 AD. The first Frysians (Frisii) date back to about 400 BCE, long before the viking were even a thing. the Romans called them Frisii. If you look up old maps of the expansion of the vikings, you can see they took footholds in France, Britain, Scotland, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Italy and even Africa (and ofcourse their homelands Denmark, Sweden & Norway), but not Magna Frisia, where the Frisii lived.
ik bin berne yn Fryslân, ik haw ek Frysk bloed yn my. Dêrneist Noarsk en Deensk bloed. Ik stam ôf fan de Wytsingen. 0:40 Kinderdijk is NOT in Friesland, but it's in the Zuid-Holland province instead.
The pictures used are completely useless, also you have some mistakes. The Dutch (Hollanders) BANNED the language from being spoken or given on schools. Also discrimination against the Frisians was a rampant problem (even to this day you still have quite a lot of people who are discriminating against the Frisians) This eventually led to the Frisians rising up in the mid 20th century to speak and learn their own language. The Frisians are stated to be from an island north of England somewhere. Also they were stated to be excellent sailors and merchants for a large part of Europe's coastal regions.
Yet if you look at the area between Iceland and Faeröer you can see a clear depiction of what could very well be a sunken island with the features that are described. www.google.com/maps/place/63%C2%B040'44.8%22N+11%C2%B000'08.3%22W/@63.4330827,-11.7913909,415508m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d63.679099!4d-11.002315?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTAwOS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

A goeie 👋🏻 i absolutely love the website you were talking about in this comment section however I have a slight issue. @@learnfrisian The reason why I wish to learn Frisian is due to it's links to English. I am also interested in Dutch and German, so Frisian is a sort of median language between English, Dutch, and German. I also have a lot of heritage and ancestry from Holland; as explained in the video that the Frisi tribes used to live there, and thus Anglo-Frisian / Old Frisian must have been present there.

This is a Audiobook right? Is there a book by the name of "The History of the Frisians" I could buy then? Just wondering as I would like to learn more about the history of the Frisians as it seems to be debated a lot. The topic of if the Frisians where Vikings or not has started many comment section wars and it seems to have two sides of "The Frisians where great Vikings!" and "What no? The Frisians where never Vikings?". So I would like to learn more about the History so I can make my own opinion. If you have a good sources on the history of the Frisians please show me them! Also Goed wurk with this Audiobook! Haven't fully heard all of it yet but seems pretty good so far! (Sorry if I am kinda doubting the history of the Audiobook there's been so many different views on the Frisian history it's hard to trust any so I would like some extra sources I guess 😅)
Unfortunately this is only an online 'book', but there are books about the Frisian Vikings. Do you speak Dutch? Then I might be able to recommend some books. The problem with this Frisian Vikings is that often people don't understand that 'viking' wasnt an ethnicity, but rather a 'job/craft/something you did'. It's an Old Norse word for 'pirating', so with other words: attacking other places and taking their stuff. There are records of Frisian being the first ones doing that and afterwards the Scadinavian ones. And yes, there were clashes between the Frisians and the Scandinavian vikings, but also worked together. (Vikings often fought among each other according to the movies). The difference is that the Scandinavians kinda depended on it, they're practically Germanic tribes that migrated up north and almost nothing grows or lives up there (cold, mountains etc), so they had to steal food etc from other tribes and that where this whole viking thing came from. The biggest problem is that no one that's alive today was there, so you can't confirm anything and most of these things are 'speculations'.
Ah I see! Sadly I don't speak Dutch but maybe I might be able to find translations or English resources on the topic if a search around enough. Are there any Frisian books on the topic of the Frisian Vikings? Maybe once my Frisian is good enough (It's at like B1 level on the CEFR scale) I could read it, or maybe I could just study the words. Tige tank!

De Friezen moatte it earst mar wolle, en as in gebiet lykas Kataloanje it foar elkoar krijt, soe it de Friezen wierskynlik ek mear moed jaan/foarbyld wêze. Goed wurk! I have not researched much into the politics of Friesland, although I know there is somewhat of a divide between the Cities and Country Side. From what I've seen/heard the Cities speak a lot of Dutch and are more integrated with the Dutch. While the more rural Country Side speaks a lot of West Frisian and is where you will find most independence supporters. This divide could make it hard to go in any direction and it seems the Dutch government doesn't care too much. I've heard there is barely if not no signs in West Frisian and the language is not promoted just aloud to be taught. Maybe I will research more into this topic 🤔
Yes, you're completely right. An indendence Friesland is a far-fetched idea, although if wanted, not completely impossible. But before such a thing could happen, a lot would need to change.
There is no independence within the EU ( another bigger union ) and the Euro isnt an independent currency
Definitely, it would be a Friesland without the EU and their own curreny, like the Sceatta (old Frisian coin).
