Should have built more.. they couldnt dial in the engines right.. i want to rebuild this plane with the Nissan Engines
I was there with my wife in '94. He was full of life and the crowd loved him, his plane and graceful aerobatics. God Bless Lefty.
Pond Racer might work well today with a set of GM LS v8 engines.
NOPE.
Agreed great sound!! Loved this aircraft from the very first time I seen it. But sad to say RIP!!
So sad that they lost that plane, I understand that the Nissan engines were nothing but trouble.
Could you imagine this aircraft rebuilt with P&W PT6’s or a deuce of Walter 601’s. That would be a hoot to fly!
It's hard to see these pond racer videos. I was 3rd on scene in Lemmon valley dry lake bed when he went in. Always brings that same sadness back. He had that arm up in front of his face. There was nothing that could be done. What a incredible loss. Sorry to all who knew him and had a piece of themselves in that plane.
beautiful design, to bad they did not have a better think about the powerplant .. I mean.. taking automotive engiens.. sure.. but expecting them to run peak rpm for 15 minutes straight?? they experimented to much in to short a development
Early version. Later version had intakes on side.
I met lefty in Pendleton Oregon long ago and I was able take a ride in his p38 and then we had dinner with him that night.
Took an incredible pilot but most importantly a great person. RIP Rick
I bet you boys knew Jack Sandberg to 💯
So beautiful

John Denver was an icon. Not only on the muppets, but could ski.😀
Can anyone tell me exactly how the engines on the Reno Racers have been modified compared to the original WW2 engines? I know that they've put special fuel in them and they suspend the normal operating limitations - but what other modifications have they made, exactly? Many thanks.
It's been a year and I can't answer all your questions. I can answer some. The inline motors are a special set up. They add extra boost to the turbos and a nitro feed. Those things will give extra HP they also developed a cylinder sleeve. That was an effort to save those RR motors. The prop gearing was changed along with the pitch of the prop. It made the planes pull hard left but that worked with the course. The air frames were highly modified removing the visible rivets and anything that may create drag. Wings got clipped and canopy was streamlined. The interesting thing about the crews that modified the planes was they quite often shared info and ideas making all run faster. My years working at Reno were made fun by getting to know the crews. Note: I'm old school and my time was from late 80s to 2008. I got to know Tiger ( can't spell his last name) and the crew chief for the Strega ( the witch) they were leaders in many of the modifications. It wasn't until the Dago Red team began working with the Strega team that Dego set his records. Please know I'm not an engineer. So some of the language may be a bit off. The stuff I've talked about is not everything or even close it's just some of the stuff those ole boys talked about. Fun folks Tiger took me for a "ride" in his P-40 ( I did a favor for his team one year when he got in trouble with the race authorities) know that ride was actually a little show for a friend's birthday. Before it was over I threw up in my hat. Should not have eaten breakfast that day. Maybe that tells you a little more about how those planes got so fast. The big radial motors were not modified the same way. Rare Bear and Dreadnought were wings bolted to motors. Look at videos of Dread and you'll see how long the nose was Bear had bumps for wings. Too bad the races ended in Reno this year. We may never see their like again😢
Mucho boost.
👍👍👍 🇧🇷
wasn't that aircraft powered by VG engines? cuz they too complicated af to work on, and they get so crammed edit: but it is awesome to hear Nissan Zs doing flybys in the air lol
Blue skies sir. Flown west too soon.
RIP Rick Brickert. He was an ace air race pilot.
Man.. would have been interesting to see how airports looked after everything was shut down.. can't really find much o-o
NavCanada had to rearrange all inbound transatlantic flights.
Now....up-size it just a tad and use dodge hemi's in it....or Corvette motors. THAT would sound so baddass.
Looks like half the plane for twice the price.
This looks like great fun. I have no idea how all that stuff John Denver wrote about feels like...the mountains, skiing, flying. I grew up near the sea, we're almost sea level, in a few decades we'll be gone, I'm afraid. I've never been in any kind of aircraft. The one time I had the opportunity, as a child, I chickened out. To this day, it scares me a bit. However, in a twist of irony, John Denver sang in "The Storms of November" that the storms of November are the only thing that's fearful to him -- to me, they aren't scary, I've been on the waterfront at 12 on the Beaufort scale to document the flooding. I've been on sea in pretty rough weather, too -- but if your vessel is seaworthy, you might be safer than on land if your house is half under water.
Jerry McDonald was lucky that day-- the runway was almost directly underneath him, so all he had to do was lower the gear and land straight ahead. Which was just as well, for he found out only after landing that one of his ailerons was jammed.
Sure, so long as he is fit to fly. I once knew a man named Chuck Grant who was flying business jets into his early 80s. If anybody knows if he's still around, write back. He was our first Captain when we crewed abord "Camarillo Connie' while based at Camarillo, CA.
Cars don't make good airplanes.
I think when it comes to designing aircraft you either got it or you don't.
Ya, anyone can lay out a wing and stabilizers, that part is easy. Reducing drag is not too hard, either. The tricky part is aero-structures. Strong, but lightweight, every pound added eats up payload, or causes higher stall speeds, longer takeoffs, and over stress. So definitely structural is where it counts, built to resist an invisible force that acts in various places, which change continually based on flight condition. If Reno Sport Class allows two engines, I thinks it's just an overall displacement limit, one could run Twin 480ci Continentals. The TCM-550s on their own are making 800-900hp these days, with twin turbos and about 20 gallons of water/methanol, plus nitrous for some. The unlimited rulebook went to 4500lb empty weight. A twin-900hp setup would be fun, but expensive. And likley not any faster than the standard sport class planes, Lancair Super-Legacy and Glasair IIIs are about as small-wing, big engine, laminar flow as they come.
Sooo unbelievable...............................................The best of the Best....Love.
Asking to much from those little engines.
A amazing aircraft.. Maybe too amazing. Seems like Everytime it hit the course, the emergency ground crews went on alert mode. Overheating. A sad end for everyone involved. I never saw it fly, and I lived in Sacramento, not far away.
So that's what a gtr r35 sounds like if it flew.
The funny thing is that these do use Nissan engines. Not the RB, but the VG.
Piece of shit that never worked and was a death machine.
Super cool plane. What was going on with the #2 engine?
+Twister051 I don't believe the overheating issues were ever solved before the plane was lost in the accident.
What a gorgeous looking aircraft !
Clearly the inspiration for pod racing
Top speed ? Engine type ?
+machia0705 The engines were custom Nissan engines from the automobile lineup. I don't think they ever got them to stop overheating. The plane never reached full potential. It reached 400 mph before an engine failure. The following year it returned to Reno and was lost in a fatal crash during qualifying after another engine failure.
FiveCentsPlease Thank you for the information, I appreciate your time. Nissan turboprop, super or turbocharged reciprocating, cylinder bank type and number of cylinders ? Fascinating. Thank you.
@@machia0705 Custom Nissan VG-30 series engines.
@@machia0705 Derivatives of the Nissan GTP race engines used in sports car racing very successfully during that era. Geoff Brabham dominated IMSA racing with the turbocharged Nissan V6 engines.
Great guy, he is missed. Sadly the plane could never be in the gold as a contender. Terrible plane. :-(
The moment you realize John Denver was a pretty great skier.
My furnace man was out skiing during an event and had a spectacular yard sale. Most of his gear was strewn uphill of him. He saw a guy come skiing down, collect all his gear, and skied it down to him. My furnace man said "Thank you John". He seemed a little shocked that he got recognized as it was snowing heavily and he was all geared up. John said "You know who I am?" My furnace man said "Yes, and I really love what you are doing for the kids (charity)." John said "Thank you" and then skied off. He could be a really decent person too.
The closing comment cracks me up... I rode that thing in Sacramento... So yeah... It's in Cali too
That's a crazy looking p38. Joking
engine sounds suck
I went on this when I was a kid I'll never forget it it was actually pretty fun.
Well it did not go to the Palm Springs Air Museum. Instead it went to Red Bull.
That thing needs to be in the bottom of the pond.
+Craig Pennington It's gone. Destroyed in fatal accident.
Why is one engine further than the other engine?
has to do with harmonics and destructive vibrations........
i live in Reno and know how slow and stupid people drive around here especially around the spaghetti bowl. you were probably doing 55 in a 65 and someone doing 65-70 passed you. notice other cars passing you as well. SPEED UP!!
Burt Rutan is a definite idol for me.
I remember the 1992 air races were the last one I could attend and not drink beer. The next year, I was 21. ;-)
who cares?
eat sheet
So the hell what Spike?
Love it!!!! Awesome design that has speed dripping from her. Looks like she is doing 500mph sitting on the ramp. Please stop destroying so many vintage airframes. I love the attention, time, effort, dedication and imagination to see a project of this magnitude through. Thank you. Now so far, please correct me if im wrong but aren't you suppose to either use a (starboard) engine or shut it down and LEAVE it! You actually had to push her? Were the brakes locking? Surly one engine has the power on a level paved surface to move her forward five feet. Now for the speed the portside prop came to a stop......? I didn't know a prop could come to a complete stop in what..... three seconds? This is what I have noticed up to 2:32. Now for the rest of the video.
Sometimes the shutter speed of the recording camera can make it appear that the propeller is not spinning, spinning backwards etc.
