Super common failure on the Nissans. A few fast ways to fix it one cut the plastic lock so it’s short enough to push down far enough to come out of park. Use a zip tie and then tie it around the front piece so it’s always forward. These both will make the vehicle be able to go into reverse N or D with the foot off the brake even if the vehicle is running or not. The other thing that is the issue is that switch you thought was the shift lock is the SAME the bottom and top are both the same pin ball switch, what happens is the little metal tab gets bend so it won’t push up enough to hit the little switch. So what you do is remove it and bend the metal tab down to give it enough spring to push up and make the connection so it triggers the solenoid. I have done this many times on Nissans for its very common, I have done every method I stated to be a permanent fix. You can also just buy a new part for 20$ and fix the right way. Some customers want it done quick fast and cheap so a zip tie works perfect just don’t hit the shifter with car running for it will pop in reverse and roll or if put in N or D the same outcome. If kids okay in the vehicle is also a hazard for they can push the button pull the shifter back and the car rolls down a hill and hits something or someone. So yes easy free fast fix but can lead to problems for the safety feature is now gone.

This is very helpful. Hopefully it fixes this same issue for my wife's car.

Thanx for the vid. Just fixed a customers car with this issue. By the way, anyone needs this done, you can remove the two front center control screws with a stubby screwdriver instead of trying to disassemble or brake the moldings.

I’m a Nissan tech the rectangle thing you had on the back side of the center console is the key fob antenna.

Terrible camera by someone guessing how to repair the vehicle.

Ok so there isn't an actual Nissan oem part number for that switch? I see them on Amazon all day for my 2014 but i tried to search for park reverse control switch, park lock switch and just about anything even close for this year and i could only find the entire shift assembly for sale... I'm not paying $699 for it when i just need the metal arm click part lol. Do you happen to have a part number for that repair part?

I just did mines again, the bending up lasted for a couple of months and I ended up buy a new one for about $11 bucks

gr8 vid. Ihave a 2001 maxima, which is stuck in park. initially it was the break light switch, as the break lights didnot work. So replaced that switch , Then it all worked then it stopped working again, but this time break lights still work. I suspect it could be this or a fuse/relay. the shifter lock kind of looks similar to this setup but might be slightly different.

I have a question related to this what could be the problem for the shifter to slip out of drive when you press too hard on the gas , I feel like it just doesn’t stay locked in drive

I took the simpler route. I pulled out the shift lock cover and put thin strips of rigid plastic in the small shit lock cover and pushed the cover back down. It took a couple tries to get the length correct but it saves me from taking the console apart. Granted I no longer have a shift interlock mechanism that prevents me from shifting without hitting the brake but it’s a much simpler “fix.” Since it’s just me and my wife that drives the car I’m not worried about it, plus you still have to push the button on the shifter to pull it out of park
