The Centre for the Study of the Afterlife of Violence and the Reparative Quest (AVReQ) is established to fulfil the goals of the South African Research Chair in Violent Histories and Transgenerational Trauma. It aims to bring conceptual clarity to the concept of violence and its consequences in the lives of victim and survivor groups on the one hand, and perpetrators and their descendants on the other. As an interdisciplinary project, we will take an intersectional approach and engage with the physical and structural aspects of violence, as well as the more insidious and symbolic forms of its expression that manifest in dynamic ways.
The Body as Archive: Women as Repository of History and Memory
In this moving and insightful discussion, held at the Stellenbosch University Museum, South Africa’s ongoing journey through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and 30 years of democracy takes centre stage. Led by Professor Tamar Garb, the event features profound testimonies from two extraordinary women, Nomonde Calata and Seipati Mlangeni, widows of apartheid victims Bheki Mlangeni and Fort Calata. Their stories reveal deep, emotional wounds and shed light on the struggles they still endure, as they reflect on the TRC and their personal experiences of loss, trauma, and the search for justice.

This is soo beautiful. We are learning about TRC in history (matrics) and what significanes it has in our lives currently. Thank you for this conversation 🙌🏾
As far as where I see [Sound of Children screaming] having been removed, removes along with it the line of sight to the 'problem' leaving only the 'issue'. 'Issues' need only be discussed, debated and politicked over. Problems need to be solved; the urgency has been removed with the voices of the victims.
If anyone has any criticisms of how I worded this or the concept/framing I'd love to hear it
