In sieben Bilden werden Episoden aus dem aufregenden Leben des legendären Charmeurs Casanova erzählt. Ralph Benatzky arrangiert für seine Partitur bekannte und unbekannte Kompositionen vom Walzerkönig Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) und kreiert damit eine Operette, die mit „Im Rausch der Genüsse" und „Du kannst von mir noch lernen" durchaus ins Ohr gehende Melodien besitzt. Der „Chor der Nonnen“ und „Lauras Gesang“ werden zum Beispiel aus einem Walzer aus dem 2. Akt der Strauss-Operette „Blinde Kuh“ (1878) und dem Walzer „Äolstöne“ (op.68) zusammengesetzt. Bei der Uraufführung singen die Comedian Harmonists die Intermezzi zwischen den einzelnen Bildern." 1:this is the first concerto not the fourth as the picture shows. It was recorded 1958 . In this cycle only the fourth concerto was recorded 1955. The following sonata is not Moonligh but Les Adieux recorded 1966 for Philips as a part of the famous 1962-66 complete Beethoven sonata cycle.

I may still have the Andre Previn piano book from the 1960's somewhere... on the first cut, Previn sneaks in a bit of Satin Doll at 2:28.

I have a soft spot for Gregorian Chats- I don’t know more that a few snatchets of words and phrases in Latin, nor am I Catholic, but there is something indescribably holy about these Gregorian chants… it’s no wonder why they have endured in Catholic religious practices to this day- they are living religious history. Also, I love these older recordings of them.
