Colorado Backroads: Engineer Pass, sights along the trail

Late June trip in 2024 takes us to a couple of Colorado's famous 4-wheel drive trails near Lake City. First up is Engineer Pass with a hight point of 12, 975 feet. Waterfalls, mine ruins, ghost towns, fourteeners: this trail has has them all.

The Grottos is an interesting area between Aspen and Independence Pass in Colorado. A day use area along Highway 82 leads to a trail that visits Ice Caves and Cascades on the Roaring Fork River.

An adventure to the Upper Snake River drainage near Montezuma, Colorado. Using the Deer Creek Trail to gain timberline near the Continental Divide. We transfer over to the Saints John Trail to look Down the Middle Fork of the Snake River towards Breckenridge and the Ten Mile and Gore Ranges. We end with a view of Gray's and Torrey's Peak along the Front Range of Colorado. Filmed in July, 2023.

We did this hike back in June this year and thought it would also make an excellent hike when the aspens turn. Easy to get to the trailhead and not too long. There are easier ways to get out of Telluride going to Ouray, there are (much) harder ways. We chose somewhere in the middle going over the Last Dollar Road. This hike to Bear Creek Falls starts in the town of Telluride. Take the Riverside Trail to S. Pine street and head up to the end of the street and the trail awaits. Roughly 2.5 miles to the falls with just over 1000 feet of elevation gain. It's popular, to say the least but didn't seem too crowded until we got to the falls. Then it was like Colorado Avenue back in town.

Hahn's Peak is a prominent landmark in northern Routt County near Steamboat Lake State Park in Colorado. The area has opportunities for off-highway driving and hiking to the old lookout tower on the 10,775 foot summit. Our mountain dog bags her first summit. Filmed August 2022. Many years ago, I was able to drive all the way over from the East Portal over to Winter Park in my 56 Chev Belair. Beautiful country way up there.
The forest service/county has sure let the road deteriorate since the last time I drove it. I remember as a kid my dad driving over the Devi's Slide Trestles (this is long before the rock fall in Needle's Eye tunnel occurred). Thanks for bringing back good memories!

In the late 70's I lived in Denver. I drove the entire route from Tolland to Winter Park in a CJ5.. The Devils Slide was a real thrill, my then wife in the passenger seat was freaking out. I miss those days, thanks for the video. Up next Guanella Pass another of my favorite places.
From what I'm seeing here, those train crews on the Denver Northwestern and Pacific, called it "Hill Hell" for good reason.
I always thought that was called Rifle Site Notch. Has the tunnel under it completely collapsed?
The tunnel has been filled in on the west side. Some report it collapsed prior to being filled-in. I haven't been to the east portal, but I assume it is in similar condition.
It is so sad to see this historic road go to ruin. I drove over this road all the way from Toland to Winter Haven in 1962 with a 2 wheel drive Ford, thrilling ride.

It will. That was the last trip I did on the 20s. I didn’t want to air them down and it was a slow and bouncy ride. I’ve since switched to K02s on 17 inch rims.
