Dear Minimalists, Please Stop Doing This

Nothing is worse when someone gets rid of something they genuinely love just so they can say they have "less". It's one of the most common mistakes someone would make when trying to practice a more minimalistic lifestyle, yet still happens regularly. This video confronts that issue and hopefully will help any aspiring minimalist avoid making this same mistake.

    Writing about positive life experiences is very valuable to me. If I have a particularly good day or exciting moment, I like to write about the things that surrounded it / led up to it. It’s beautiful to look back on it and walk through memory lane to see what lit me up that day.

I really appreciate the fact that you mentioned you also make the effort to note the events and things that lead up to those moments. Funny enough, from personal experiences, sometimes even the details that lead to those moments are often the most rewarding!

    Respectfully you’ve misunderstood. It’s an extension of the movement of ‘dopamine detoxing’ (a silly phrase as you can’t detox from a naturally occurring neurotransmitter). The goal isn’t to replace the dopamine highs and distractions of smart phones, but to reduce that urge and waste of time. Nor for most people was it meant to replace the phone entirely, clearly you can’t text or use apps, but to help keep you away from your phone unless you needed one of those phone specific functions. To call it BS was unnecessary.

    • @fromthedeskofcollin
      @fromthedeskofcollin 18 дней назад

      Your comment is exactly what my whole video discussed. Not eliminating it completely, but using it less.. What I called BS, was the claim that it can replace our phone completely. Once again, which I went on to discuss in detail why I disagree with that extreme claim. All the best, Collin

    • @eastcoast4233
      @eastcoast4233 18 дней назад

      @@fromthedeskofcollin I have watched the whole video Collin, I don’t think you did address those points and especially that you, I think, misrepresented the view of replacement when nearly no video on notebooks says that - they nearly all talk about reducing wasteful phone use and keeping you off your phone unless it’s a core phone function. All the best.

      @@eastcoast4233 Interesting. In the future, I’ll attempt to make it a bit more simple and direct to avoid the apparent confusion. Again, that’s on me for not specifying which ones do that. I appreciate you sharing your opinion(s) and feedback.

    The thought of geting rid of such valuable items, it's heathbreaking :/ BUT, I love fountain pens, I love writing. Practicing with them, prefecting my own technic is how I disconnect from a rough day, BUT, that IS MY thing, perhaps the original poster wasn´t even using them... so... idk, I really don't see the problem other that... the pens where like a memory from they loved ones... :/

    • @fromthedeskofcollin
      @fromthedeskofcollin 25 дней назад

      The immediate regret tells me that, while they may not have used the pens themselves, it was their last memory/physical item representing their loved one. In a nutshell, it was the act of throwing it away almost without thought for the sake of “minimalism” rather than actually considering what that item represented or meant to them specifically. I totally understand where you are coming though. We are all different and for some, getting rid of the pens if they never used them wouldn’t affect them really. This story specifically, is an example of the bigger problem of getting rid of items for the wrong reasons and the repercussions of doing so. I can’t thank you enough for sharing your thoughts as you make a very good point. All the best, Collin

    I don't recall where I came across this (as I unfortunately cant provide well deserved credit), but I found a great litmus test to assign value to objects that is significantly more practical than Marie Kondo’s ephemeral question “Does this spark joy?”, in the form of the Poop test: “If this object had poop on it, would you wash it off or throw it away?”. Objects that have high sentimental value would not get thrown away, even if they serve little practical purpose. High pragmatic items wont get thrown away because the rationale is that you would either wash it off OR throw it away and immediately replace it. The person in the example probably wouldn’t throw out their family members fountain pens and simply replace them with different ones because of the emotional value of those specific pens, but it might help discard and de-clutter items that no longer meet that value threshold.

    Lovely Video, I totally agree. I don’t know when or how some people decided we weren’t allowed to keep anything sentimental in minimalism. Like it’s a bad thing to have a heart or value things given to you from loved ones. It really does seem to be an all or nothing mindset in many people. I absolutely agree with the idea of balance and temperance. I know in Ancient philosophy to master temperance and not asceticism was supposed to be the best form of balanced discipline 😊

In this world, surely any reasonable person does know there's a lot of bad stuff. No use to ignore it or pretend it isn't there. A suggested step towards honesty: Beware of yielding to peer pressure.

    I use digital media (laptop, smart phone, tablets for reading). But for notetaking, if I go to note something on my phone, I feel annoyance and a sense of engaging with a network -- even if it's "only" Google -- that I have no wish to be involved with; i. e., my privacy is invaded, if only to a small extent. But a small paper notebook gives pleasure, knowing there's no network there, no need for a battery for that matter, or a data connection. Pen and paper are personal and comfortable in a way no digital media can be.

    I have been journaling since I was 17 or at least that's how far the journals I currently have go back. I have journaled since I was in my early teens (although, I regret that I burned a couple of journals before the ones I have currently because a family member went snooping and I felt like a private space had been invaded). I have fallen off the wagon and gotten back on; I am currently 26 and I got married last summer. As of my wedding day, I have tried to write at least one page a day...I haven't always met that goal, but I have most days and one of my goals is to capture as best I can a day to day recollection of my marriage when it was new so I can look back when I've been married hopefully 20 years and potentially share insights and memories with my children

      Hey there! I can definitely relate to the inconsistency side of journaling. I am far from consistent and always have been. Like you, I first started in my very early teen years. Then stopped for most of my early adult years only to end up starting back up in 2020 and not turning back since. Even to this day, I never maintain a consistent writing schedule. Sometimes I go daily for weeks and then sometimes just a couple days out of the month. I think that is such an awesome goal and idea to practice the recollection of something as impactful of your marriage to share with your children. I can't thank you enough for sharing your experience and wish you only the best with accomplishing your goals :) All the best, Collin
