Ep43 Savage - Brush Off The Dust Like A 1700
At 34:38, why not just take his queen?
I absolutely should have lol. My mind was on other things and I didn't expect my opponent to blunder like that, so mentally I kind of just assumed the queen was protected 😅. Also it was a bit of a time scramble at that point
@0:13 I learned a line with Nb5, it's also the most popular move by far in the masters database
Ooo I forgot about that move. I'll look into it :)
thought it was a bad sign that the video was so short 😅
One of these days it will be short due to a swift victory. But today is not that day lol
You really should analyze this game. Your opponent blundered like 2 times and you didn't take advantage. If you aren't taking advantage of common blunders that the opening you play induces, you are missing out a lot.
The Tipsy Chess episodes are meant to be more casual :) I looked at the game review after reading your comment tho and it looks like I missed a queen fork to win the bishop with Qa5+ at 0:24, but that was a pretty unusual position in my opinion. Usually after Qa5+ their knight can block with Nc3, blocking the check and defending the bishop, but here we just so happen to have an unusual pawn on d4 which prevents that. Did you see another blunder by the opponent besides that one tho? I didn't see one when I looked at the game review
Very cool. I like slower speed runs for educational purposes instead of the GMs that just crush plebs for fun and get to 2000 in like two weeks lol I'm hard stuck at 1100 right now, hopefully I can learn how to get past that point.
Thank you! I'm trying to make this series and my channel very educational so I hope it helps :) If you're trying to improve you might also like my Subscriber Games playlist
@@ChessWithCody I'll check that out!
Love this game.....Nice end!!! Congrats....I love the format you are doing....Keep on going!
Thank you!! I was worried this one was too long so I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Arrows are okay, it helps to visualize your toughts.
Okay cool, glad it wasn't too much. When I watch top level streamers the arrows get to be too much sometimes and I can't always follow the ideas lol
Great game!! I enjoy this more informal style a lot.
Thanks Greg :) I like it too. I might make this the new format permanently and cut out the analysis part of the videos. It keeps them snappier and more entertaining and I feel like it still provides 80% of the educational value
10:12 The reason I didn't sacrifice the exchange was because I thought that rushing in a position where I simply had the better pieces was not the most logical thing to do. I also did not take because I thought that if instead of bxc3 Qxc3 was played, then my opponent gets the queen active, and is up an exchange.
27:07 Kg8 was a mouse slip, I knew how to win that endgame, I also know that sometimes if the pawn is on the f or c file that the endgame is only drawn. But I knew that the endgame I played was always winning as long as my queen was near the pawn, so I tried using my opponents pawn to create a mating net, or forcing a specific sequence to mate.
Great logic and decision! I think most players wouldn't have even considered it as an option so well done
@@simonthemutlu That's a painful mouse slip haha. Good recovery :)

nice video! im doing a similar series on my channel, but it's road to 1000 Elo lmao. Good luck getting to 2000💪

How come you did manage to see the rook is trapped but miss the fork? Anyway, good finish. I like your video and will follow
Hahaha yeah... I had tunnel vision. I think I saw the trapping idea right before I played the initial knight move so I was just zoned in on that and didn't even consider my opponent might blunder a fork right away
11:08 "Winning plan" was extremely simple here: Nc5+ forking the King and the Rook :) But you went for more complicated one :)
Awesome content. Love the engagement. Just an observation/ top move: at 11:40 knight to c5+ wins on the spot 😊
Thank you!! You're right, I totally missed that fork haha. That would have been much simpler than what I went for in the game, I had tunnel vision on my trapping idea
11:05 isn't kc5 a fork? btw I like your content, your style, making the viewers participate by asking questions, using daylight and smiling. keep it up, Cody!
I totally missed that!! Great eye, that would have been a much more simple win. I had tunnel vision on my rook trapping plan lol. Thank you!! Glad to have you aboard Mohamed. I love making these videos for you guys
The format of this is speed run is different, I like it.
Thank you! Can I ask which aspect of the format you like? I’m still playing around with how to structure the best content that helps the most people
Sorry I'm only a 1100 on average at 7:28 Can't white just play Bg3 forking the queen and rook? I'm not trying to be rude we all can learn together
Good eye! You’re absolutely right, I missed that my opponent had Bg5 in the game. But luckily so did my opponent lol. Keep the questions and suggestions coming, please always feel free to chime in 👍
Good match!, nice to see me at 350 looking ahead on your moves and not being that wrong :), keep it up !
❤ Thanks brother, that's awesome. Keep learning and having fun and the improvement will come 👍 If you ever have any questions about my games or how to improve in general just ask me in the comments any time
Disclaimer: I'm rated around the same as you. The pawn in front of your castled rook is often not a big deal to lose. Double so if their right color Bishop is dead. What you lose you make up for in the open file activity for your rook
Good point! Having the open F file for our rook is often an asset. One thing I forgot to mention in this position is that because I played pawn g6 earlier, I think white can probably trade off my dark squared bishop on g7 with their bishop and then THAT diagonal is also sketch for my king. Whereas if instead I still had a pawn on g7 I would have felt much safer since I could hide in the corner. So I think with this setup it's still risky to play fxe6. But I do think fxe6 was probably best :)
Me yelling fork
Which spot? Hit me with a timestamp
1:53 or somewhere around there Knight to e3 forks rook and queen
@@ChessWithCodythe bishop was guarding that square now that I look
Ah okay, yeah the bishop covers it this time. Good looking out tho! Keep those suggestions coming
I think Nf6 move 3 is slightly better than Nc6 move 3 because if the opponent plays 4.e5 then you have 4... d5 which counterattacks their bishop and if they take the knight I think at the end of the variation you are slightly better or equal because you have the 2 bishops for the less optimal pawns.
Oh interesting! I don't think I've seen that line before, I'll try to remember that for next time. Thanks for the input as always Simon! Btw the game you sent me is next up on Subscriber games, I just haven't gotten around to recording it. Soon!
A nice back and forth. Those active bishops were scary, way to close it out! #ChessChampion energy right there
When the going gets tough, Chess with Cody gets going 😎
Awesome game and great commentary Cody! Both players were great tactically but not great at early development
Thanks Greg, I think that's an accurate assessment :) You should send me one of your games soon!
Always the best commentary! Cody is the man
Thank you :)
After Bxb2 does Rd1 prevent you from losing the exchange?
Wow yeah I think it does! Good eye. Cool under pressure
❤❤❤
The memorization of chess openings is becoming ridiculous. I prefer playing against Stockfish chess games with a different setup, such as Gaugamela Chess.
11:42 Nd4 is best because they can't take due to a tactical sequence in which if Bxd4 or Nxd4 after the pawn recaptures its losing to take the pawn back because of Bxh7 Kxh7 Qxd4
Ah thank you Simon, that makes sense! I have to keep a better lookout for those bishop sac discovered attacks :)
Cody is accidentally highlighting Nd5 in the game. The computer wanted the other knight to go Nd4.
@@smileyqwerty100 oh dang you're right Greg. My chess literacy is still a work in progress lol. Nd4 looks solid, it's like a psuedo-outpost since it can't really be attacked there and it prevents BxNf3 which happened later in the game, doubling my pawns, and it comes with a tempo on the undefended bishop
@@smileyqwerty100thanks, Nd4 with the idea of rerouting the knight on f3 to a more aggressive square since blacks setup is passive and you can punish his bishop placement by gaining a tempo on each reroute move. When the knight is on f3 its good defensively, but since the opponents setup isn't strong offensively, the engine is saying its unnecessary to have the knight there and uses the Bishop on c6 as a target to bring the knight to another square. I get the idea now ;-;
Hahah you can always blame me. Tough game from the initial mistake. Opponent never let up afterwards
Lol thanks for your sacrifice Greg. Yeah man he was relentless this game, played super well. Never gave me any chances
One of the better games for sure! During the analysis section, you might want to consider swapping out the rating journey slide with either the comp evaluation over the course of the game or the top ~3ish engine moves.
Thanks for the input Greg! I like it. I considered including the top engine moves before but I wasn't sure if it'd be distracting. I try to filter out the noise and callout the useful info verbally, but yeah might be better to have it on screen as well. I'll try it in some future episodes! I like the idea of the evaluation graph over the game too, we'll see
I just need a detailed repertoire for the black pieces.
I might be able to help, let me ask a couple questions: What's your rating range? What's your win/loss rate as white? Win/loss rate as black? What openings do you play as white that you're comfortable with? What are you playing as black currently vs king pawn? Queen pawn?
@@ChessWithCody I currently play the Sicilian najdorf as black but due to lack of knowledge of the lines I have loopholes in the theory.
@@SamyakSawaimoon cool Sicilian is my main opening as well. Have you checked out my Brush Off The Dust series? I play lots of sicilian defense there and you can see what I play in various positions Also I know the youtube channel Hanging Pawns has lots of really detailed opening lines. I'm starting his Sicilian playlist for my own learning, but it's a large undertaking haha
I personally can't see how you can play a decent game in 3 min.
im sorry but the way you talk reminds me so much of zuckerberg😭🤣
I definitely thought they would see the mate in one since they moved their bishop to attack that pawn the move before. You were hovering over the rook capture at 8:00 for so long too! Adding suspense like a true professional. Nice game Cody
Hahaha yeah when I replayed that section it's kind of crazy how long it's sitting there. I got really lucky. I think their motivation for moving the bishop must have been that I was attacking it, not with the mating threat in mind so they just overlooked it. Happens to the best of us :) Any extra suspense added was by accident but I'll take it. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good lol
Queen + bishop 👑👏❤
response to 14:53- there's knight to e7 double check. king moves to f8. then queen to f7 mate. there's also knight to f6 double check. king moves to f8. then queen to f7 mate.
i'm happy this got recommended to me. i like your positivity even in a difficult game. I'm only at an ELO of 700 and i learned a lot from your gameplay. my response to your question at 11:27- probably not pawn takes because you'd essentially eliminate your bishop's scope. i feel like bishop takes is okay but i feel like with more of your pawns on light squares it's better to not risk losing your dark-squared bishop. so i feel like knight takes would be best cuz then you open up options for development of your light squared bishop in the process. additionally, you pose a future threat to their pawn on f3 which could become weak should they move their knight/queen that is defending it.
Thank you!! I'm so glad you got something out of it. And excellent analysis! You're well on your way past 700 with thought processes like this. Btw I actually JUST released a video where I basically coach a 700 elo subscriber on their game, you might find it useful! ruclips.net/video/H2H4I5m-Bic/видео.html
❤❤❤
Thanks for your support Anne :)
You're welcome Cody! ☺️👏 I
At 14:42, what if you had played Nb3+ . b3xN Qf2xB? It kills the bishop which makes their Queen threat less scary and wins a free bishop I think their next knight move Nh3 was to protect against this. I don't know though it could end up worse than f6 haha
1500 blitz is nothing to scoff at. if you want to add to the list of books to read you could look into the art of learning by Josh Waitzkin. He has a chapter about investing in loss. Looks like you’re doing all of the right things.
Keep your head up, all part of the journey
Thanks Aidan, exactly man. All part of the journey :)
Nice vid! Thanks Cody!❤
Glad you enjoyed it! This was probably my favorite episode so far :)
At 5:02 can't you take the pawn on g6? Their bishop is hanging and so is yours but if they take your bish the pawns are equal and you're in a slightly worse endgame probably, but definitely still a draw. Edit: after they take your bishop you take their bishop, and can defend all the pawns with rook b1 and then rook b2 unless they infiltrate in which g3 and then king g2 is probably best to start going towards the advancing queenside pawns. I might be incorrect though
Good eye! I didn't even consider that, a worthwhile option. Going for the desperado-pawn grab is the right spirit. And I think after that we're equal in material, as opposed to being down a pawn like I was in the game. AND I'll have a pawn on the b file so black will have to do some work to make a passed pawn over there. Overall that position is so much better for us. It might still be winning for black because I think they'll be able to make a passed pawn before us, I'm not 100% sure, but your idea seems like the best shot, Simon. Thanks for chiming in, next time I need to keep a better eye out for desperados!
At 17:54, I wonder if there’s Nxd5 tactics for white since they have pressure on c8. Seems like rooks would need to trade and afterwards white’s queen can get to the 8th rank. Maybe not winning but some chances
Ooo good observation! So yeah after Bg4 there might be some tactics. Although I suspect Nxd5 wouldn't quite work for white with accurate play by us: So the line I'm looking at is after 1. Bg4 is we pass the turn to let white go again and then 2. Nxd5 Rxc1+ 3. Qxc1. From there I think we can play queen or pawn takes the knight on d5. The pawn is no longer pinned since we traded rooks. Recapturing with the pawn on d5 is the probably best move so that our queen stays on the back rank and protects white's queen from checking on c8 and winning the a6 pawn Taking the knight on d5 with the queen also kind of works though because after they play Qc8+ we can block with the bishop and they don't have any pieces left to pressure that bishop. Although then they probably take our a6 pawn, but we're still up material But good eye! I wish I had noticed this in the game
Tickling the Queen. That’s the move!😂
In the edit I almost made fun of myself for saying that but decided not to draw attention to it haha
Cody! The Codester! Code Master Flex! Absolutely beautiful video man, I look forward to these
That makes me so happy to hear Aidan, thank you man <3. I'm glad you're a part of the journey :)
I think d6 was a mistake since there were two pawns clamping d5, and bishop b5 could be played when the knight was developed so that either the d5 pawn break would be impossible, (since if Bxd7 Nxd7 they could go e4 and have compensation ( also if Qxd7 the queen is probably misplaced but can maybe rotate to c6 to make a diagonal battery towards g2.), if c6 you weaken d5 which means white might not take your pawn... but I don't know maybe the engine thinks I'm completely wrong. I just thought that e6 was more natural since the dark squared bishop is locked if d6, and can't put reasonable pressure if fianchetto'd onto g7 since the knight and pawn protect e4, so I thought keeping the e6 diagonal open would be useful so that after d5 you stop e4 (since the bishop is fianchettoed and protects the d5 pawn) you can put your knight on e4 protected by the pawn (if necessary, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you plan on taking back and playing f5 after castling to lock the center completely and start kingside or queenside operations.) Oh yeah e6 also allows the bishop to help attack the queenside if you push the queenside pawns. Edit: line 2: I meant positional compensation since they get the whole center and can maybe play d5 themselves to make the fianchetto'd bishop useless.
Wow I was very wrong, the engine didn't care
@@simonthemutlu Wow such detailed analysis!! You made some good points, especially about Bg5 being kind of annoying for my setup in this game. My intuition still is probably that d6 is probably okay, maybe a slight inaccuracy. Even when a square is "double clamped" like d5 was, it's somewhat common to challenge and attack it, I think I've seen that in some grandmaster lectures on RUclips. Not in this particular opening though so idk But yeah "e6-b6" is definitely a legit opening system, which I remember GothamChess talking about so the moves you suggested were definitely viable as well! Keep the commentary coming!
I think NxN won the knight for the pawn, but I won't be sure till the analysis part, just wanted to comment this while watching the video.
Good eye! That's correct :)
Love these videos👍👍👍👍👍
