Thanks for the video, you made me laugh with the center hole/divot issue 😂
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for watching!
What grits and type of wheels are you using? Thanks. Enjoy watching!
The wheel in this video was a 150 grit aluminum oxide. Don't know what the bond rating was but it seemed to be on the hard side. Cheers!
I was watching intently about center drilling M2 with Carbide. Anytime I have cut bearing races, it was a squealing contest.
I've had some squealing at different times too. That off shore "carbide" center drill I bought was made out of marsh mellow! I was amazed at how well that hand ground old masonry drill worked
Really cool project. THANKS
Thanks and thanks for watching!
Excellent video,thank a lot.
So nice of you!
for extra points - helical spiral flutes for chip clearance
That would be cool but not is possible with my equipment
You sure know your stuff! I enjoy your videos, and I always learn Very clever thread grinding setup.
Thank you very much!
Well done. That is a bucket load of work young fellow. BC
Thanks!
What is your grinding wheel that you used for the thread grind? I am guessing that it is a fairly fine grain wheel to get the narrow point of the V to hold up. Very cool build, thanks for sharing.
Thanks! It's a 120 grit aluminum oxide wheel. Not sure about it's bond details. Can't read anymore
Nothin but NICE!
Thanks!
Wow ! Huge project, thank-you so much for your efforts ! Do you ever lap your centers ?
Thank you! I do freshen my tailstock spindles as needed by grinding. I haven't ever lapped them
@@Lappemountainliving I was referring to the female centers in the ends of workpieces -- just looking at buying laps myself. I had never heard of them myself but saw them on a Suburban Tool video. Doing some cylindrical grinding on my (new to me) T&C grinder I am seeing ~ 1/2 thou out of round - thinking lapping centers might improve this. KBC tools (and probably others too) sells center lap holder and lapping stones.
I hadn't heard of lapping tools for female centers before today. Thanks for introducing me to something new! I'm going to check into it
Very cool, what a fun exercise. I’ve always wanted to see thread grinding being done.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
I love this stuff. Thank you so much for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
I`m a simple man - I see a 3 flute drill and i`m willing to check it out... There is nothing like a good 3 flute drill, except for a solid carbide 3 flute drill... Fucking nice! Best regards! Steuss
Thanks!
Great info! Thank you for putting this together. Providing the right wheels to use and the tip of leaving the center nub are very helpful. Keep these videos coming.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
nice video. It is good to see someone who knows what they are doing.
Thanks 👍
Ive seen others take time balancing wheels. No? Yes?
It's entirely possible. Haven't heard of that myself. I don't have any idea how to do that or what special equipment/technics might be involved.
A fair # of the hubs that came with my machine had balancers built into them. I haven’t monkeyed with them as I have tons of wheels on hubs and dont know what I’m doing. Dont have balancing rack either. Steve summers showed using a balancing rack and a drill to dimple the sides of wheels until they hung balanced.
Interesting! My equipment didn't come with wheel mounting hubs. All wheels are mounted directly to the wheel arbor. I don't believe wheels are supposed to be balanced when using my equipment. Thanks for introducing a new concept for everyone to consider.
I'm not quite following your procedure of loosening / tightening the lock nuts on the sensitive work head as you spin it. I'm assuming that the arbor is in a collet in the work head and a center on the tailstock. If they're not pointing at each other, there's "binding" on the tailstock center and when the lock nut is loosened off, the work head will swivel slightly into its "happy place" ? Never seen it done like that before.
You're exactly right. Thanks for watching!
where were you when I needed someone to show me how to grind tools 45 years ago. I really like to watch you sharpen tools. nice videos. keep them up. thanks
Cool, thanks!
Excellent educational video thank you 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Hi I have two hybco fixtures and I use one to sharpen gun drills. These contraptions really are worth having. They sharpen taps, drills counter sinks and reamers. I have had them for decades and they keep working. Nice video. I have then on a B&S 13 and a Cincinnati #2. Nobody knows how to run them anymore other than old guys. I enjoyed your video. Keep them up.
Thanks for watching!
Bro, you just like making sparks.
Yup ;)
I always wondered how a 3 flute drill is sharpened, now I know. Do most 3 flute drills not have the center "chisel point" of common 2 flute drill bits? So they require a pilot hole to be drilled first? Thanks for the demonstration !
I can't speak for all multi flute drills, (Core drills) but in my experience, all of the three and four flute drills that I have worked on do have a center hole and do not have a chisel edge. Yes they do all need a pilot hole. Having said all that I am certain there are tools out there that I haven't seen. Thanks for watching!
Making my day watching you….Paul in Florida❤
So glad!
Cool video, I have not seen many three flute drill sharpenings! I am wondering how a true three flute drill would sharpen as this is a non-center cutting drill. Looks to be in effect a reamer. I know they definitely make three flute carbide drills which center cut, so it would be interesting to see those resharpened. Or a HSS/HSCO/PM equivalent.
Great suggestion!
As Joe Pesci said in ‘My Cousin Vinny’. “Those must be Magic Grits”
LOL,,,Thanks for watching!
Great to see your channel growing…lots of great info…lots over my capabilities and equipment…but one day!…Paul in Florida
Cool, thanks!
I have been looking for an end mill sharpening video for the longest time. Thank you for making one!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Is this the updated brushless version or the brush style motor? And all must remember it's a combo and a compact unit.
Your wife's a champ for filming this. Subscribed. Thank you. Ive got a Harig and a surface grinder. Looking to undersize a 12mm reamer. How far you reckon I can go before I need to re-grind the relief? A few thou off the Radius? Any rules of thumb?
Thanks, she's a gem all right! You can get away with way more than you would think. A tool will still work with the tiniest sliver of a flute but remember as the depth of the flute decreases your vigilance in clearing the chips has to increase accordingly. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate the Sincerity with which you talked about trying to set a good example for people like myself who didn’t get formal training in machine shop tools. It would be easy for me to learn bad habits unknowingly and your efforts help keep me safe in my machinist journey
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Well done, great presentation. Enjoyed your video.
Thank you kindly!
Thanks!
Many many thanks Randy! We very much appreciate your support! Keep on grinding! Cheers!
I think I read somewhere that some reamers are deliberately made with unequal tooth spacing to reduce chatter. Rifle chambering reamers maybe?
This is true for some. Same reason tire tread is uneven. Helps break harmonics.
I've seen it most often in chatter proof counter sinks. They are a bear to sharpen! Most tools are on index but you always have to be warry of the ones that aren't.
Nice. I enjoyed your work.
Thank you very much!
Excellent work 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks a lot 😊
Really appreciate this content. Got a kolee couple years ago and the use of machine is a deep subject. Steve summers did some videos on his. Keep em coming!
Glad you're enjoying! Thanks for watching!
Nice one! For the future: Inch sized taper pins are usually a taper of 1:48 (1/4 per foot) or 1.193489 deg. Metric taper pins are 1:50 or 1.14576 deg. Clock maker pins and die maker reamers can be lots of different angles.
Great, all these machines came from the factory Guards and possibly other safety devices 😉🇨🇦
This was perfect. Thank you!
You're so welcome! Cheers!
Best explanation of sharpening I’ve seen, thank you. Your channel is great.
Wow, thank you!
Excellently explained, loved the video, Thanks so much.
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for watching!
Just one question, is the axial movement designed to accommodate grinding the flanks of the teeth if the wheel is shaped to the tooth profile? I have just discovered your site and am enjoying your videos a lot.
In this example the wheel is dressed flat and the main purpose of the axial movement is to match the grain of the grind to the pitch of the tap. To grind the profile of the teeth would require that the tap is advancing at exactly it's pitch. This would require the rotation of the tap to be linked to a lead screw. My equipment isn't designed to do this and doesn't have a lead screw to drive the table. Thanks for watching!
Your clutch must have slipped when you disengaged the feed sins you did not damage the thread at two accounts! As "joergengeerds360" says, Do as Joe Pie does! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the comment!
Do you not have to redo the leedin chamfer? Just asking, i don’t know anything about machining.
You could if it was dull. It's not automatically required in the re-sizing process
Thanks for this and the previous show and tell! No excuse now for not sharpening my dull slot and end mills. Cheers 👍
Glad to help! Thanks for watching!
These sharpening videos are brilliant. I’ve been entertaining picking up a tool / cutter grinder but haven’t found good info to help me understand what’s involved. Cheers! 👍👍
Thank you! Bets of luck finding your new, "old" machine
