Brian Brown. Back Country Riding Friends.
Новая Зеландия
Добавлен 1 июл 2014
This channel is about our rides on our mountain and gravel bike, both e assist and manual, and me on my small motorbike exploring various trails and back roads in New Zealand. Sometimes with friends sometimes not. Don't expect big jumps, crashes etc, because that's not what this channel is about. Expect lovely roads and trails and some awesome scenery.
Rotorua Lake Rerewhaakaitu Tern BYB8 vernighter
This ride is to trial out my Tern BYB 8 folging bike for touring but catching a bus to the beginning and home from the end of the ride. The folding bike means I can keep my bags within standard airline check in luggage, which Intercity Bus Company will take on their buses. With a normal bike It's at the drivers descretion at the time of loading whether he'll take it or not, even though you've booked the seat. You can't book the bike.
I left Rotorua via the concrete path and Waimangu Thermal Valley and returned home via Waikiti Valley. Everything worked well including the new drone.
Thanks for watching.

This was a stuniing if strenous ride up in the hills behind Napier. The Mangatutu Hot Pools were fantastic. Just be aware even though the ride was 46km but we climbed nearly 1400m, so make sure your battery is fully charged if you're on an ebike or you're fit and/or have low gearing. We get taken up to the start of the track by helicopter. Then descend down from the tops of the Kaimanawa Ranges then through the Beech Forest back to the Kaimanawa Alpine Adventure Base. Don't be fooled into believing it's all down hill. The 400m of climbing in the ride are not easy. If you ride this do take time to take in the views. Thanks for watching.

That's great, love my BYB 8. I mostly use for commuting but have done just over 100km on a day ride around Tauranga and 75km on the Te Awa trail (Hamilton to Karipiro return). I got the Tern hard case to fly it, but yet to try that.
@@RobinCapper I took the term to Europe in the winter and flew to Chch in August a in Hardcase suitcase. Not the Tern one but a very large Samsonite. It was so easy compared to taking a normal bike.
Hi ,nice ride, where did you park at Puketitiri, ?? we are in a 7.4 mtr motorhome so would need a park to suit
Balls clearing had heaps of room
That looks like a beautiful gravel road. It's hard to beat a smooth gravel downhill swoop! Are the hot pools public access?
@@garydye4270 Yes they are public access. They are run by DOC. Absolutely lovely.
Well done Brian and Sue
@@ngairekissick6124 thanks Ngaire, it was a great ride and the hot pools were the icing on the cake.
Much more fun on a Honda.
@@paulfuller7832 I've done it on the Kawasaki a few times. We see allot more on the pushys.
Very fine. Done a number of those roads as well. Yes, the country is very pretty through there.
Thanks for the comment. Yes it's lovely riding all through there.
Certainly disappointing alright 7:11
Thanks for the comment. Yes it's rather sad. We did 450km in Europe this year and saw more rubbish and broken glass in 3.5km back home.

The Whitewhenua is stunning. Have you been from Taumarunui to Ohura via Kururau Rd? Well worth the ride, especially as it finishes at Fiesta Fare!
@@smiles_per_hr6408 yes we've ridden it but not all the way to Ohura but as part of a loop from the Doc camp on the Forgotten highway. Actually I think I've done it 4 times on the bike and 3 times on the motorbike it's so lovely. Fiesta Fare is something special. Thanks for the comment it's greatly appreciated.
Please get the spelling right, it’s Taumarunui. Other then that , keep up the good work.
@@FransVanBuel sorry about that. The spell checker changes it. No big deal as you obviously know what was meant. I'll double check in the future.
Hi Brian, great video. I was wondering where you based and if you welcome new people to your group.
@@bernadettenanayakkara7275 we're based in Rotorua. It's not really a group, just friends riding together. But if anyone with the same relaxed social attitude wants to come along that's fine.
@@backcountryridingfriends great thanks. I am a Rotorua local too and love nature and into hiking but loves biking too.
@@bernadettenanayakkara7275 allot of our rides are based out of our mobile homes or Caravans and are quite often based at an NZMCA park. Do you belong to the NZMCA and have a van or caravan. We meet most Sundays for a road ride in the Rotorua area, normally 35 to 60km. If you'd like to join us and see how it goes, your be most welcome. We're away this Sunday but home for next Sunday if you'd like to join us. We always have a coffee sometime during the ride. Cheers PS we're all retired and most of the ladies and some of the guys are on E assist bikes. There normally some of us on normal bikes.
What a great video. Done the road to Ohura a few time with friends on motor cycle on a day trip from Rukuhia to Owhanga and back. Looked a fun trip with friends.

Thanks Tony. Not up to the standard of yours though.
Thanks for this as I wondered if I could ride it…answer is yes! Some great filming, useful commentary, superb scenery and ducks, and happy cyclists. Switch out the overly loud kitsch music next time and you’ll be good to go!
Thanks for your comment.
Sensational views! Great post, love it.
It's a great ride. Thanks for the comment.
What a lovely ride. Thanks for posting it.
My pleasure.
Inspirational!
I don't know about inspirational, but it was hard work, but beautiful.
Living the good life Brian!
Doing my best
Looks good. Are active members of this group in the Rotorua area? Thanks
Yes we're all from Rotorua, but it's not really a group you join. We're just friends who ride together and use the name so I don't have to change the credits every time I make a video.
You said it - a beautiful area to ride in. The gravel road surface looks pretty good too.
Yes. The gravel was perfect.
The Fisher Track looks less daunting in the video than I'd imagined. In my planning, I'd be riding the second half of your ride in the opposite direction and continuing south from Nat Park. Your steep descent on Fishers Track would be an ascent my way. How daunting a climb would it be in your opinion? I guess an option would be to bypass the track as a decent shoulder on SH4 from Raurimu to National Park sounds encouraging. I've abandoned the idea of riding the Kaiwhakauka and Mangapurua mud bowls hoping to do the Fishers Track route instead.
We've ridden Fishers track twice going up it, loaded, on our Horopito loops. Hillary was pleased to get to the top but Sue and I didn't find it that hard. We were all on non ebikes then. Now Sue is on an ebike. Enjoy.
That's reassuring, thanks Brian. So I think the final route from Owhango will be Oio Rd, Upper Retaruke Rd, Fishers Track, Marton Sash & Door Track and SH4 to either Ohakune or Raetihi on the way to Whanganui 😂 Should be a good taste of that area without the toothpaste-mud of the 2 hard-core tracks. Cheers.
Sounds great.
lovely spot
It certainly is.
Shouldn't that be Whakahoro? Nice ride great day.
Thanks. Yes it should. Typo error. I'll see if I can correct it.
Done
My wife and I did that same loop a couple of years ago. I did not anticipate how much of a climb it was back out to SH4 ruclips.net/video/mOV3PlKj3xo/видео.htmlsi=S_OFBF_4ABaD5R5E
Looks like a great loop. Fisher track especially. Thanks. Good to see you both going so well
Thanks John. I hope you both are keeping well
Another enjoyable video. Rode this last year and turned around at same point. Boy that road just goes on and on….Camped at Lake Chalice and had place to ourselves. Refreshed with a dip in the lake only to get sticky on the climb out. Great spot.
Thanks for commenting. I must admit I thought camping at the lake would've been magic. It looked so beautiful. Ride safe.
Loved this ride, but can get a bit windy/dusty. The views make it worthwhile. Wish I’d seen the baby crayfish….fascinating!
Thanks for the comment. The views are magnification aren't they.
Pedal or ebikes?
Hillary and I were on pedal bikes, Sue, Liz and Ross on E assist bikes.
Brian, another reason I'm lapping up any info on riding here concerns Blue Duck Station. You noted that the café wasn't open when you were there. Do you know if it is a viable stop for overnight accommodation (NOT camping!) and food, at least during the spring/summer season? If so, after riding the Timber Trail and on to Owhango, it could make a nice 3-day ride to Whakahoro to Ohakune to Whanganui. What do you think? 😀
Funny you should ask this question as only a few ago I enquired about staying one night in any of the Blue Duck accommodations. They got back to me very promptly. They normally only provide accommodation for 2 or more nights. I can't remember the exact figure, but it was around $360 for 2 people. How ever they do sometimes do a one night if it works with staff etc. They said they could do us one night for around $260 for a room in a lodge. That was outside our budget so we didn't take it any further. We were to provide our own food for that. Email them they are very prompt repliers. I hope this helps.
I realised I didn't answer the second part of your comment. That would be a great ride. From Owhango you could ride straight to National Park, either along Kaitieke Valley Rd to Raurimu then about 7km on SHW4, which is what we did in the next video. Or you could go to National Park view Fishers track as we did in the Horopito loop video. You can now ride from National Park to Ohakune without going on SHW4. Hope this helps.
Thanks for that info Brian. I think I'll skip Blue Duck Station for the same financial reasons you did. I didn't realise there was a way of biking from National Park to Horopito other than along SH4. Where is it because i assume you're not suggesting riding up those tracks to Ruatiti Rd? Btw, I rode the Old Coach Rd 10 days ago. It's a real bone-shaker and very slow going. I'm looking forward now to seeing your video and description of the Fisher Track.
I'm sorry I put you wrong with an alternative route. I thought it was up and running but it isn't, another year and it should be connected. You'll still have to ride the Old Coach Rd though. Sorry to get your hopes up.
@backcountryridingfriends That's OK. Good to know a track is planned although connecting to the Old Coach Rd may be a mixed blessing. Having just ridden the OCR northbound, I don't fancy it that much the other way. The cobblestones make for a rough ride and the grassy slopes at the southern end are easier to ride safely going uphill. After riding to Horopito, I chose to return to Ohakune on SH4 and Tohunga Rd, (SH49).
Brian, great video; particularly appreciated the superb drone footage as it showcases the character and nature of the area really well. I'd love to ride in this area some time and with this intention, I drove from Ohakune to Ruatiti Domain 10 days ago. Owhango to Whanganui via Oio Rd, Ruatiti Rd and the Raetihi-Pipiriki Rd looks appetising except for the connecting bit on the Kaiwhakauka track. As you (and others) have indicated, the gluey mud through there is problematic when wet. Further to Helen's comment, searching for location is greatly helped if place names (and there are heaps of long ones in this area), are spelt correctly, eg Whakahoro and Kaitieke, according to Google maps. 😊
Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure where your coming from with the spelling comment. Both Kaitieke and Whakahoro are spent as in Google maps.
Apologies, I thought the places in the video were written (in the captions maybe?) as KaitEIki and WhakOhoro. It's really only an issue when searching online. The spelling does matter then.
Brian I really enjoy your videos. A suggestion for people like me who are unfamiliar with places, would it be possible to provide more information regarding which district/area/island you are in? I know that I can search but it takes me away from your video.
I thought I'd done that in this video, at the very beginning and in the description. I'll put more info in the description. Thanks for the suggestion.
I've updated the description of both the video and playlist worth a detailed description of where Kaiteiki is.
Looks like another great ride. Thankyou. We have been talking about doing a few rides in this area, and you provide the information.
@@lynnemccarthy-my5mi yes Lyn a great area. The videos for the other 2 rides will be coming out over the next couple of weeks. But you'll have all the info from Komoot. All of the rides were stunningly beautiful.
That's another great showcase of this very pretty area! We pass through the edge of the area on the Kingmaker 1000km route with the Kiwi Randonneurs, I'm keen to do some more routes around the area.
Thanks for the comment. Yes it is a lovely area with allot of inter linking roads, both sealed and gravel. We've done numerous other rides in the area having ourselves at Otorohanga.
That's great country through there - but the rock is Ignimbrite, from the Taupo eruption, not limestone. It's awesome climbing material, very rough! Thanks for the great video.
Thanks for that information. I'll update it on the next video.
Sounds like Ozzy Osborn is narrating 😅
Looking good team! Such a beautiful ride 😍
Yes it was. Now to find time to do the outlet half.

Many thanks for the Video, great scenery, and an honesty box, unbelievable.
Thanks for your comment. Yes an honesty box now days is very rare, especially in that situation. I hope they aren't getting ripped off.
Great movie again Brian, here is a tech question for you. I am putting my ebike aside for a while and deciding to go gravel bike or road bike, but I am asking you which climbs steep hills the best on tarmac. I think you are on a gravel bike in this movie. I am thinking road bike but not sure. I am quite fit .
Thanks for the comment. My road bike is by far the easiest on hills. Now days you can normal fit up to 32mm tyres on a road bike. I run 28mm tyres on mine. I can still do smooth gravel etc on it. Enjoy.
Beautiful country.
It certainly was.
Great video, so much work gone into setting up those ride by shots, this is a really valuable resource for anyone considering doing the ride. Well done and thankyou.
