Vintage Echolette NG51 S Golden Box Tube Tape Delay Project
EBay project going up and starting at $1.00. I wanted to make a video to try and show all the good and bad for this cool delay. Looking forward to it going to a good home where it can rock and roll once more!

1952 Gibson GA20 Estate Sale Find
Просмотров 1402 года назад
Checking out a 1952 Gibson GA20 that I had just picked up at an estate sale. Still has the 2-prong and death cap. Speaker had been swapped with a pretty horrible cheap commercial speaker. Have a reconed 62 Jensen alnico on the shelf somewhere that will go in this one. But I’ll be damned! Fired up and worked! Even with a Tele and no attention for years you can tell she wants to rock and roll!

    Nice licks. Got the head version, r50h with 6l6"s, no tremolo, but I instantly recognized that TONE. Thanks for sharing.

    About the thing with the top left knob. From what I heard in the demo this might be a misunderstanding. The top left knob („volume“ of recording head 1) is a stacked (double) potentiometer and it interacts with the bottom center knob. Basically the bottom center knob controls the amount of echo that is fed back to the recording amp. But the stacked pot top left acts in such a way that when turned clockwise it reduces the amount of echo fed back. The reasoning for that is some not longer known Design decision. I guess they wanted to avoid too many repeats / self oscillation of the shorted echo…because that would sound awful to most ears 😄 I noticed when you turned it ccw the device ran into a kind of feedback loop / self oscillation (of the white noise that is present). Which would be as expected when the top left knob is pretty much all the way turned ccw and the bottom center knob is turned at least half way or so clockwise.

    Do both of those inputs on the left go through both tubes on the preamp?

      @funkymusiccompany 11 месяцев назад

      Yup - only the third input hits after the fist preamp gain stage.

    I've got one of these and it's beautiful. Don't think anything involved with this is a 'simple' fix unless you know what yer doing. It's got a whole lot going on, find a tech. But goddamn it is gorgeous - and an unknown gem compared to a bunch of the more well known and expensive units. Like mine, yours is in impeccable condition, which i find just marvelous for something pushin 60 years old. Anyone wants to see it used to full effect check out the band Dungen,. its the core of the guitarists sound.

    How does that original compare to a reissue?

      It’s kind of a mixed bag, really. As far as sound, no comparison. The vintage Gretsch Filtertron pickups, electronics, hardware are incredible. As far as playability and consistency, you could give the nod to the newer Gretsch guitar with a little attention. In my opinion where the newer instruments typically need love is fretwork, nut work, hardware, pickups. Although some upper end newer Gretsch guitars have nice Filtertron pickups. Almost always they still need a fret level, fine fret finishing work, and attention to the nut to be what they should be from the factory.
