Blerd making videos about the intersection between ADHD and games like D&D because I feel like it. I've been running games for nearly 20 years and I've learned things that I think can help other people too . I always want to hear from you about your challenges - and victories - so let me know what you want to know the most. I'm technically on Twitter @astralmarmot but I hate using it so ideally leave a comment if you want to reach out.

ADHD RPG: Gamemastering & The Art of Letting Go
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Does ADHD make it harder to let go of our expectations at the table? In this video I explore how being a gamemaster for Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, and other ttrpgs teaches you to release your assumptions and go with the flow - and why that's such a special challenge for those of us on the neurodivergent spectrum. How to ADH-DM: The Beginning
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.3 года назад
Let's talk about DnD and ADHD. Cuz it's about damn time we do. As long as I've been a Dungeon Master I've had to contend with the problems ADHD creates, both in the game and out. We think and learn differently than other people. And most of what's out there isn't aimed at people like us. I want to change that. I'm Astral Marmot, aka The ADH(DM), and my dream in life is to identify the obstacles...
Would love to see the Miro one-shot session! Your videos have made me feel so much more comfortable with the idea of GMing and how I can have my ADHD work with it rather than against it. Thank you!
Less than a minute in and I've already Obi Wan'd: of course I know him. He's me 😂 not sure what the rest of the video is gonna be like but it's enough for an interest sub
"And unclench your jaw" Oh, th- thanks. I didn't even realize I was doing that!
visiting again this video, 3 months later. my current campaign is closer to finish, still thinking about Eberron. let's just prepare a bit of the next world... got like 7-8 sessions left on the current campaign.
just discovering your channel because I'm starting to prep for my first game as DM (for mothership) and everything was super useful, would love to see how you prepare a one shot in miro :)
It's the next video coming up! I love Mothership - one of my friends runs the Panic Table actual play channel and it's fantastic. I'm glad you found the videos helpful; thanks for commenting!
I'm loving this channel.
almighty engagement
How long, on average, would you say a single one of these guide cards took to design?
I probably spent about two weeks on and off on them. If I focused up I could have knocked each one out in a week but focusing is not always my strong suit for obvious reasons.
@AstralMarmot Preaching there! I will say though they look fabulous! 😁
I would love it if you could share that d100 table of questions you ask at the start of the session
I just added it to the description! I found the table online ages ago and I wish I remembered who I got it from. But hopefully it'll serve you well in your game!
Please please PLEASE POST A TUTORIAL ON HOW TO USE MIRO AS A GM. I am a new dungeon master, and I want to learn how to use miro from the perspective of a gm, so that I can get tips on how to organize, things to put in, and how to arrange them.
It's the next video I'm working on! I hope to have something out by the end of the month. Stay tuned!
This would be most appreciated
do you make a custom d100 table for asking characters questions or did you source one from somewhere to start yours?
I sourced it from somewhere online years ago and I wish I could tell you where. I added a link in the description to a spreadsheet with all the questions in it. I hope it serves your game!
When you try to overprep, but fail to manage your focus and start your first session with a lot of really detailed notes but the important stuff was scribbled out in the hours before the session This video will definitely be helpful for the main campaign I'm working on! I've got some stuff written down, but that's mostly just fleshing out the initial idea for the world. Now I'm stuck unsure where to focus next. I'm so grateful I came across this today!
I hope this video helps you get that world fleshed out and your campaign rolling!
I have a version of miro for my campaign. Its a collection of loose papers of various sizes and quality of legibility. Oh and some of it isnt canon but just chaotic planning
Man, Miro looks pretty good, but I am not a fan of how much it seems to be using Generative AI with its features. Does anybody know of an online digital whiteboard that a group can collectively view and edit that doesn't use AI?
I would love to see miro in practice
It's the next video I'm working on! I should have something out by the end of the month.
Comment for Dio
This is so cool! Can you show us how you made these brochures, please? I think it's neat! :D
The content is nice. I want to say the following to help you make content: the video contains a looooooooooot of lingo that I don't understand as a new GM, player, and someone who doesn't know a lot of ADHD terms. I'm also not tech savy. Defining terms would be helpful. I am not a therapist or understand a lot about ADHD symptoms despite having it. Resources in the video need to be linked in the description. Good job pointing out theory vs reality! A lot of RUclipsrs don't talk about this. :D
I agree, those are great points to make my video better, thanks for the feedback! It's easy to forget what people know and what they don't and I can be more conscientious about defining terminology. I hope you continue to enjoy what I make!
@@AstralMarmot I will. :) Keep up the great work! :D
I used miro with my group in the pandemic as an improvised battlemap thingy but i never thought about organizing with it, the collaborative player board idea is so great! i would love a miro prep video for sure!!
I'm so glad it resonated with you! I'm working on the miro prep video now and should have something out by the end of the month.
Gotta love it when the advice one gives is actually auctionable, focused on the practical tools. You have no idea what a rare treasure that is (okay, you probably do, I'm just trying to say that I appreciate ya). Getting another take on how to categorise information is probably something I could use, too, some of us have a hard time gauging what their players want or need to know. 😅 Never heard of Miro before. I'm not that much of a visual type, I tend to produce text and tables and occasionally a database here and there when I organize information for myself, but I can see my players taking a shine to it!
I would absolutely love to see you organize an adventure on Mirro.
Thank you, space mammal, this vid is what my neuro spicy butt needed to help organize. Great work 🎉 👏
My mind is blown by the idea of a player-facing collaborative digital white board! I will have to present my players with this idea and see how it works but I am sure that it would be a hit after the initial learning curve since it makes note taking more engaging and less stressful on one person alone.
It's definitely a change from the traditional note-taking approach, but it can be super effective for keeping everyone on the same page. My players love it - I hope yours do too!
Another banger. Good job marmot.
hey hey, anyone here got thoughts on normotim for adhd? been considering it for better focus, but not sure if it's the move 😅
Oh man i forgot to ring the bell! i missed so many videos XD
Wow just wow, i need this Miro in my life right now the fact that others can use it and collaborate is so epic, thank you for this wonderful video. Also yes i would love to see a video of you doing dnd prep on Miro i love seeing other Dms process it helps me understand new ways i can stream line and make things work better for me
Miro is a game-changer - I'm so glad it resonated with you! And yes, a prep video is a great idea - stay tuned for the next release!
awesome video as always!! would love a miro prep vid.
Do the one shot video!
Nice 🫵
I'd love to see this prep, I'm always tinkering with prep techniques and your content is great for me
Love this vid! Yes, please do a Miro vid. Thank you for your channel!
curious about miro, I've used obsidian a little and the way you describe it sounds related
I've heard good things about Obsidian but I've never tried it. I try to find (and recommend) free tools because this hobby is so expensive already. I'm working on a miro prep video right now - it should be out by the end of the month. Thank you for watching!
@AstralMarmot of course! Thank you for finding the time to respond!
I love the idea of a digital whiteboard, and would be very interested to see how you go about doing a one shot preparation using one.
I'm so happy to see a new video from you! These tips are amazing. I'll definitely use them. Earlier this week I was wondering if I should use Miro to organize a Pathfinder campaing that I want to GM (first-timer). I'd love to watch a video about that. Hugs from Brazil 😁
Hugs from America back to you! I'm so glad these tips are working out for you. The next video will be about prepping a one-shot in miro so keep an eye out for it this month
Shout out from Brazil, btw :D
I was so glad when I saw this thumbnail! Was already expecting for a new video to come out lol. Your content is amazing, thank you for the effort you put on it
Never been this early. I better watch the video before I put it in my watch later lol.
Another home run video! I think I speak for everyone here when I say that you should definitely do that one shot build video on Miro soon!
Great video!
That with google forms looks like something I could use. It's hard for me to gather people because I'm aware of my limitations so I become so careful that I don't even reach out. But if I write out questions where people can click answers then I can get information without getting too drained before the actual session.
I must thank you for bringing up guides offering different points-of-view from different factions, and reinforcing the idea of the guide being in-universe. This not only solves some problems I'd been agonizing over for a while now, it's inspired a new opening session. In brief (yeau, right!) I'd wanted to open with a holiday/festival scenario (because I've used them before with good results), but couldn't choose what kind of holiday. While watching your video I decided to combine the weeklong county-fair "Honing Days" and sacred "Day Of St. Esquellon", with two short guides: one for locals & secular/peasant folk, and one for the upper-class/cosmopolitan gentry types. Each guide can then represent a specific world view, the dichotomy being a major focus of this setting. I have more than enough content for each (and a couple others, to be honest!), now it's just a matter of separating serf information from nobility. Thanks again! [edited for clarity & to say I've subscribed]
I've been really enjoying these videos. They're very thoughtful, but also very succinct.
Thank you! I'm glad you find them helpful.
“Last time, with the Executors…” is how I start this campaign’s sessions. It gets a recap going and is a clear delineation.
So happy to have found your channel. I'm going to try out some of your advice in my main game. And that "and unclench your jaw" always catches me right when I'm grinding my teeth. 😂
I think that this video has sat in my Watch Later for like 6 months. In that time, I have reworked my game system, shifted campaign ideas, "finished" a test module, and started on a new one that is my current campaign plan. None of this has anything to do with the video but I came back and watched it anyways and yes, yes I needed to hear this.
Spooky, but I too had a history teacher named Mr. B who was a balding German man with 4 fingers. The highlights of the stories he told us about it were: lost a bet with the shop teachers and they took it as payment, infection after top secret art heist went sour, and my personal favorite: Shark Attack. The man was also obsessed with cats and all his art history presentations were absolutely riddled with them. I miss that crazy man.
I have recorded a one-on-one session where my player was running 4 PCs, and afterward I was able to use Whisper SpeechToText to turn it into text, and it did a really good job. I was even able to then have chatgpt summarize and itemize stuff for me. Sometimes playing with those tools is enough to get me excited to do book-keeping.
Your channel is a godsend among all these other youtubers that focus on all the embellishments and not enough time on the real meat and potatoes of tabletop rpgs, thank you!
Nearly clicked away at baseball but the "stay with me nerds" kept me 😂
