Tank Water Heater Earthquake Strap Installation
Tank type water heaters are often required to be installed with water heater straps. The straps should be installed on the upper third and lower third of the tank and the bottom strap should be at least 4” above the water heater gas valve.
Approved water heater strap kits should be used. Galvanized plumber’s tape is not good enough. Holdrite manufactures several great kits for use, a vinyl strap kit and a metal strap kit. In this video, Plumber-Tom discusses how to install each one.
Here are some links for water heater strap kits:

Checking Water System Pressure
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Do you know how you can check the pressure of your potable water system? System pressures inside of potable water systems are required to be below 80 psi according to code. Pressure reducing valves can maintain pressures at a safe range, but they do fail over time and have to be replaced. Let’s have a look at a few ways you can check your system pressure if you don’t have a gauge built into the...

In this video Plumber-Tom explains the four basic step...

Any reason why flared copper tubing is not commonly used for plumbing in the US except for gas flex lines? It's a lot more common in Europe. No soldering in involved. My background is mechanical engineering and we use mandrel steel tubing with JIC 45 degrees flared end connections all the time... 3000 psi is no probs at all. 50-100 psi in household plumbing would be cake walk.

I’ve been to plumbing school. I never took my test and moved out of state. Just started Studying for the tests and this is an amazing recap for me. This is almost what I paid 6k for. Just no exams each week. Tom you seriously know your stuff and do a great job explaining it. I wish I had you for a teacher back in the day. I thank you for making such high quality content. I’ve been plumbing for 9 years. Anyone wondering what videos to watch about learning code… this is it. Seriously. He’s going through the history of plumbing and everything just like school. I am 33 and live in Denver Colorado. No previous construction or applicable experience besides some woodworking for two years when I was 21. The videos you are providing here and fantastic. Thank you so much for the resource. I just picked up the 2024 IPC book/ binder. I am using your videos to study as well. I am not doing anything that requires much skill/ knowledge or responsibility yet but I am loving it anyway! Set my first two toilets the other day. Plumbing is just a dam cool profession! Thanks 🙏

Good video. Thanks for sharing. Question. Most expansion tanks that I have seen that are installed correctly ( my original was not installed correctly…) are dead headed (only has a cold water pipe going to it) and not mounted on a T fitting like you show… I was looking online after watching your video and found mounting instructions that show it mounted on a T fitting like your diagram. There are of course nothing showing a pressure gauge or shut off valve or any real instructions. Is it ok to dead head the water line into the expansion tank or is it best practice to Tee it off the water line? Thanks for your time! 😊

I have an inlet pressure reducing valve pre set at 12psi. Yet my boiler runs 20 psi cold and almost 25 psi hot. The expansion tank also precharged at 12 psi. My home is only one story (with basement where the boiler is) and the highest piping point is about 8 feet from the boiler. The boiler was installed with the expansion upside down, meaning valve stem points towards ceiling. The circulator was installed right before the return into the boiler. When the maintenance guys come they always say that's ok. I don't believe it. Would adding or reducing pressure from the expansion tank help the problem because there doesn't seem to be any other way to lower the pressure?

quick question: in my appartment the washer box has the drainage pipe coming through the box and is above the bottom of the box by 3-4 inches. also the drain pipe has no sealant around it as it is coming through the hole, so we had a mishap that a washer gasket was faulty and water leaked in the washer box and into the space between the drain pipe and and hole around it. Is this type of installation normal?

Hey Tom or comments section... With water savers being almost everywhere in the house, say on a 2 1/2 bathroom house, if you bring 1" into the house then 3/4" to water heater, and branch off with 1/2... would using extra 90s instead swoop/looping the PEX make a big difference when it's near the fixtures? There's some places that make it very difficult to swoop... I'm wondering -- since everything is ~ 2.2 gallons per minute approximately, if it's not near a hose bibb, washing machine, or water heater, will using extra 90s before the fixture actually affect the flow with a properly set PRV. I wasn't really sure how to even calculate this particular situation or if it even needed to be addressed with such low flow in showerheads and aerators. I couldn't really find it addressed anywhere in the book
