Guitar Repair and Maintenance By Jeff Raaymaker

Добавлен 4 июн 2017
This is a guitar maintenance and care Channel (with occasional opinion and rant videos). I am a self taught guitar hobbyist that would like to share some tips and tricks with beginners. All my techniques and procedures are only suggestive, and certainly not the only way that repairs and maintenance can be done. Most importantly, never do any repairs or upgrades to your (or anybody's) guitar that you don't feel completely comfortable with doing.
Getting Closer to Finishing the Breedlove!

2023 has been a rough year for me all around. Filming, editing and uploading have been pushed aside for some medical issues as well as work problems encountered. With that said, I am determined to finish the Breedlove and work to improve this channel. So here is how it will work: I intend to ramp-up my activity on this channel during the winter months, and reserve the warmer months for my other...

Remember I am not restoring a classic. It was designed and built as a entry, level, beginners guitar and that is all I am trying to restore it to.

Just got one also. Badazz!
Dude, this is exactly what I needed to see so I can do my Gretsch - thank you!!!! I had been trying to get to it thru the F hole, not the neck pickup. And the fishing line trick was genius!!! Thanks, Jeff!
What if the screws aren’t coming up or out it at all in the beginning?
If the screws aren't coming out initially, then apply the pull tab first and pull up on it gently as you turn the screws starting with the screw closest to where you glued the tab on. the screws have likely striped the wood so that will have to be addressed before reinstalling the plate.
@@guitarrepairandmaintenance4741 this worked so much. Having problems with the 16 bridge coming up so tried to make the springs inside a bit loose but its to do with the strings. Do you have any idea what i can do now? Its not as bad as it was but think its the strings
Great job! Nice hat by the way!👍😎
Thank you! Cheers!
What about the fingerboard extension, did you shim that too ?
No. Being a bolt on neck it was not necessary. There is a gap between the fingerboard extension and the body from the factory.
Nice! That custom vice thingy looks pretty cool! Good to see ya back to the guitar stuff. Merry Christmas!🎄
excellent i needed this for my flying v watched this gem then fixed it and it worked!!!! Awesome idea on the tuning fork!!! Nice guitar you got there ROCK ON and ON and ON!!!👍🎸🧠🤘🙏
Thank you ✌✌
Is that an HB 30 Washburn
Yes
Lights on ya doofus.
the vertical small machine screw into a plastic dowel has nearly no resistance at all... unless glued!
See people don't realize actually the next block comes unglued from the body if you pretty much glued a neck block back into the body and clamp it down it fixes the problem
was super careful but some of the finish still popped off around one area, super visible damage since the wood underneath is a bright color. super bummed, it’s a very very expensive bass. thanks ibanez. at least it’s on the back.
Timings for my benefit: from 4:19 Tailpiece removal, then it starts getting interesting. 5:00 Knobs off
If you place a small strip of thin tape ( I like 'scotch' type matte finish gift wrap tape ) on top of the feeler blade at the nut slot, the file will just kiss the tape before that expensive nut slot file hits the feeler blade. As much as the good nut files cost, I personally want to avoid hitting a piece of tool steel with the filing edge. The tape adds so little thickness to the stack, I have found it to not make a noticeable difference in the depth of the nut slot. If you are concerned with the added thickness of the tape strip to the feeler blade stack, you can reduce the height of the stack by the thickness of the tape strip. Well made video with nice close up views. Earned you a new subscriber.
How can its switch for example changed?
dude that is genius, you have saved me a lot of trouble
Cool video. I don’t even think mine has a screw there.
All breedloves' do because of the truss system.
Nice guitar 👍
Thanks!
I always thought I was pretty clever in the gizmos I made out of household leftovers but you are a true genius. Those jigs are well thought out yet very simple to make. Thank you for sharing these ideas.
Great idea. It pays to have the right tools.
Nice! Looks killer! How does it play? Good action?
Thanks, It actually plays quite well for what it is!
Using the feeler gauges for your reference guide is genius! Thanks for the tip! I used this on a new guitar this weekend and it worked out great! A lot quicker than doing it by eye and feel.
Great job! I’m going to have to call you Chef Jeff!👨🏼🍳That looks delicious! You have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks, it's pretty good! Normally this video is not public and I just send links to family and friends. I will probably leave it up through Christmas.
That’s going to look pretty cool when you’re done with it.

Now how do I get it back on, because it seems too big to fit on the Guitar and I’ve tried to put it back on numerous times already and it won’t budge
You may have to carefully file down the edge of the cover until it fits.
@@guitarrepairandmaintenance4741 Thanks man
I just ordered one of those clamps from Stewmac, which cost me about $50 plus 15 bucks shipping because I'm in Europe. The email telling me it had already been dispatched arrived about five minutes before I saw your trick with your daughter's hair tie. My daughter has about 5,000 of those. I'm very bitter! Ah well, I feel like I can do a good job when it arrives, and your video gives me a lot of confidence. Thanks, Jeff.
Excellent. Thanks.
I cannot figure what the measurements are.. You have a stack of feeler gauges but never explained anything about why you picked the ones you did..Is it just arbitary.. How did you figure what the stack should be? extremely confusing to me... When you press the string down at 3rd fret how much clearance do you want between first fret and bottom of string.
Sorry for your confusion. The height of the action at the first fret should be .254 mm so use that gauge. The stack of gauges are found by trial and error. Mine measured at 1.4 mm, yours might be different depending on the gauge of fret wire used on you guitar or if it has had any fret work done in the past. Just find a gauge combo that when placed under the finger position of the first fret and then pressing the string down on the stack of gauges the .254mm gauge fits between the fret wire and the string without moving the string up (fits snug). Watch the video carefully especially the beginning and it might answer your third fret question.
Music video has a deep and powerful feel to it. I agree that it sounds a lot like something Pink Floyd would do. I always enjoy Pink Floyd's music. I will have to check out more of your videos here. Anything about guitar and I'm always interested! 🙂🎸
Great video, great job, keep up the great work!!Guitar sounds nice👍
This is a very crude way to do this job. There are SO MANY videos that real luthiers have put up to show you THE CORRECT way to set up a guitar. If you want it right, go by their methods and instructions. It’s not hard to do, but it’s easy to mess it up if you don’t do it right.
("Sgt.J.") That makes me so, nervous. Lol. Thanks ☺️ for sharing that. ☕☕ Years ago there was a Gtr i, wanted at a local store before "G.c." it hurt my fingers to play it. Can't believe the store put it on display?
Hey Brother. Good video.
Thank you!
That’s great! I wouldn’t even attempt to try anything like that… I’d be afraid I would get my hand or my arm stuck in the guitar!!! Lol
I might get stuck when I go to install the bridge reinforcement brace!😬
@@guitarrepairandmaintenance4741 Yep!! 😧
You can use cards too they are thin, stiff and made out of paper. I keep a couple of fresh decks in the shop
the ace of spades
Not the way I was taught..I been 30 years at this. I set up blind boys of Alabama the year they won their first Grammy. Just saying......
Then why not teach your way instead of leaving some vague comment?
@@matteverett nut files are for making nuts from scratch. You adjust a nut by sanding backside of the nut. The secret is to build a nut that's correct then install.and remember pros have to pay for same tools.plus the experience.
this guy is high...lol
As I’ve said before…. Very innovative sir!! That is a cool jig you came up with there. I bet it’ll work like a charm!👍
It appears to be working!
This is quite a danger procedure
Thankyou Friend, i am just about to change the 2nd set of strings on my HB-30... you have saved me from making the same mistake twice.
So, what is the diameter of the bolts you used? Considering that bridgepin holes are very narrow on the bridgeplate, those bolts must be very thin.
0.18 inch, or 4.6 mm. They were just what I had laying around and they fit.
Cool, very innovative sir! Good luck with the final results.👍
Fingers crossed!
Cheers, mate!
I have to admit, I don't see how this would work without warping the higher register of the fretboard, but I could be wrong.
It's a process of moisturizing and pressure that has taken two weeks so far.
INteresting! Do post a follow-up!
It is a series, this is the third video...more to come.
@@guitarrepairandmaintenance4741 Yup! Found the other two after watching the 3rd. Would have been nice though if you had explained the rationale and positioning of the wooden blocks.
At this point I should make a video to answer your question and those on FB as well.
Good job! Don’t ya just love toothpicks! I always have a box of toothpicks in my workshop….and the kitchen as well. I use em for all sorts of things. Love the homemade glue gun!👍
Thanks! This guitar is not worth all the work I am doing to it but I'm a sucker for a challenge.
@@guitarrepairandmaintenance4741 yeah, me too, love a challenge, especially when someone challenges me to play a song!
That is a good thing to have. You can get the tone exactly how you like it with one of those. EVH used a MXR eq on his pedal board. I used to have a behringer rack mount eq in my live rig along with a pod pro and a power amp. It was a nice setup.
How did I miss this one. That is one nice looking blue on the LP.
Thanks! I like it and I've always wanted an LP.
