Hello all, a mistake was made when filming this video on the direction you should be turning. When sharpening a reel mower blade with the SK-1 Reel Mower Blade Sharpening Kit, you need to turn the reel counterclockwise. This backward motion ensures that the blades grind against the cutting bar effectively, allowing the lapping compound to hone them to a sharp edge. Repeating this process severa...

Folks, stay away from these canned sharpeners for steel edged blades. For my axes, hatchets, tomahawks and mowers I use stone and oil. You can buy varying coarse stones and different types but if you go with the lay of the blade then you won’t lose,
Raising height cuts closer to ground? Lowest cutting height means what? I want the mower to cut as close to the ground as possible, so what position on the roller?
I believe raising the height means it is further from the ground. The lowest cutting height means it will cut lower to the ground. Not really sure. He needs to verify.
Mine didn't come with e clips and the groove doesn't have a slit to put e ring on. Bummer😔
I got a notification about a new video today but it is labeled "private".
This is the cheap reel mower of the America that made in China, this is.junk
The product is useless and does not sharpen the blades as advertised.
Craftsman has zero videos I could find about how to get both sides of the handle over the posts. Your video was helpful. Thank you!
You did a marvelous job explaining it very easy…thank you
No E rings with mine
my mower doesnt have grooves…
Mine neither. They changed it and no more e rings
With this instruction somebody's going to ATTEMPT to bent the bottom part, their hand slide into the blade, and you got a MAJOR accident. I rated it ZERO for that alone.
Those having a hard time with the handle, just put it right up against your stomach (like in the video) and pull. Goes right in.
What about the stuff that you use with a brush and handle to turn the blades? Would this work better?
Mines didn't come with e rings 😩
Will it hurt the reel mower if you raise that roller to medium and lowering the blades all the way? It is a lot easier to push but don't want to damage it.
The problem is when i get it to cut paper then its too tight and won't spin? So im at a loss. Also the cheap plastic roller and bracket for height adjustment broke so I just threw it in the garbage, made in China, what a joke "American lawn mower company"......
Use a thickness gauge or thin piece of paper. Don't try to cut that paper, try to have that very small gap between the reel and bedknife. Zero or 100% non contact. But very very close, this will allow the reel to spin freely and because of the high speed the grass will be cut. Easier on you and much less wear on the machine.
I did what you said then the instructions are actually completely the opposite so just was a waste of time following this
Please share your details?
@@pammychica the one I have doesn’t have clips. You have to attach the bottom piece to the reel mower first and then attach the rest of the handle. It’s impossible to attach the handle to the reel itself when the whole thing is together
Yes for women is little hard to putting the handle in, but I asked my good friend guy he was so easy puted in. Loved this product 👏
So hard to putting handles in impossible 😪
This video needs to be re-done, not skipping any parts and showing the whole thing from start to finish… Including better camera angles. His arms and hands were obstructing everything and there was no need to zoom out to show his face.
Thanx for the help.
Me too

Just a heads-up for everyone using our reel mowers: Your mower may or may not come with e-rings. We've recently decided to move away from including them in the package, as they aren't essential for the mower's functionality. If you don't find e-rings in your box, don't worry-your mower will still work perfectly without them!

The design of customer's expected strength is a giant product liability nightmare. Who insured you? Are they aware of this inherent danger assembling? I could only see my fingers flying off.
' the Chinese company that bought us doesn't value your safety , and so instead of a metal e ring, we've gone ahead and started using the same plastic Wing nuts we use to keep the handle together. We save nearly 25 cents per $150 cutter this way. We appreciate your blind trust in a 200 yr old company name. We'd love to make a new video explaining how to install this without embarrassingly admitting that our products are inferior to what they were mere months befor; but gosh filming a 2 minute video to properly educate our customers might cost upwards of $100. Thankyou!'

Ok I now read your comment. Mine didn't come with e rings and no slit to attach e ring. Thanks for clarifying!
What a great video. Thanks. American Lawn Mower Co. I love this company. Just so happy with my 5 blade 14 inch. Can't wait to get a 7 blade 16 inch in the future. Way-to-go!
This is all so extra & unnecessary to do smh
I can't do that's too difficult for my carpal tunnel, now I got to pay my neighbor to do that.
Well you've got an a$$hole for a neighbor then.
They charged you for this?? 😢
You didn’t say a word about retightening the adjustment screws ?
I wish every single piece of furniture or item from Amazon had a helper like this!! Much needed
Thank you!!!
Up until 3:35 it only shows how to move the bedknife then immediately he is tightening the 4 screws but doesn't explain what they are or what they're doing.
In the manual it will tell you the inner screw which they call the front screw moves the bedknife away while the screw nearest to you, or the rear screw which it is called, moves the bedknife closer to the blades, it's a balance. The manual says only 1/16th turn at a time. My problem is, those screws do not move, baby! I am not cutting on the right side at all.
You know I did this with a Scott’s 14” the other day. I loosened everything including the bolts that allow the bed knife to swing when they’re loose. Then I pushed the bedknife against the reel with good force and tightened the side bolts. From there, the top 4 screws were my micro adjustments. I would do it this way again.
I thought this model also had 3 adjustment holes behind each wheel.
I may have an older model, but mine came with no E ring.
I ended up dulling my blades with this sharpener. They have more of a rounded taper now. I can't help but think it was user error. Is there a strategy other than 'slide back and forth' to sharpen the edges?
Do you do this before the backslap method or before? Are both necessary?
Yes- no E rings????
I didn’t either
I have a Bauer and no green indicator light, would it be the same procedure.
he cranks it clockwise because he has removed the left wheel; however, the instructions with the kit (and the subtitles) say counterclockwise, because they assume you have taken off the right wheel? No matter. What is a pawl? Kit instructions make a big deal not to lose it.... How to clean brush? Otherwise, good video.
That looks very intuitive. Great demonstration.
This product is insane to try and put together. You have to both be strong enough to bend the bar to fit it into the second hole, but you ALSO have to be less than an inch away from the blades! Thats a 2 for 1 right there.
I literally cried trying. 😢
Just ordered that sharpener. I bought a used 3 reel gang mower and I was scratching my head on how to renew the mowers.
I will try the Tourniquet trick to get handle on pegs- as Mentioned by comments. Lame directions -
And why did you find it necessary to remove the handle? You could have just flipped them over out of the way.
That is what I did yesterday; yes, mystery why the wheels came off. You made me laugh with your comment. Thanks.
You need closer up views when explaining the settings
Tahank you. Helpful.
I just got mine yesterday, and it didn't come with E rings
Yeah it doesn’t. No biggie
You don't explain what you're doing with the 4 screws on top. What are they for, and can they be adjusted without loosening the side bolts?
I agree. He skips from the tightening the bolts to adjusting the screws with no explanation. Disappointing. The sharpening kit manual gives more details about how they work.

@@cefarther3945 Thank you. Any idea why he loosened the bedknife side bolts a second time instead of just adjusting the other 4?
