Which one is the Best Character Generator? | Tutorial and Review
Let's compare 3 character generators for TTRPGs. First we have the 1 page character crafter, second, the Character Creation tools from The Adventure Crafter, and third, Universal NPC Emulator.
This video gives a brief tutorial for each system, then I will discuss how they performed when I tried them. This time around, I played a solo game of Godbound to put these three character creators to the test.

However, this system is much more condensed and therefore, much simpler! Here I will give you a brief tutorial of the system, and walk you through my impressions after writing 3 short stories using the rules. Then...

Excellent, valuable work.
Loving this videos. Caused me to find your channel and subscribe so I can keep seeing them. Keep up the good work. Would love to see the 1-page location crafter and 1-page creature crafter included in future episodes.
Thank you so much! And I'm currently working on a 1-p location crafter vs. (regular) location crafter video!
@ excellent news!
UNE is my go-to, but oh, the mental gymnastics I have to go through when interpreting NPC motivations that feel evil at first glance, but I need a good character out of those keywords. Happens too frequently. 😅😀
Thanks for the reviews.
Sorry for commenting so many times. :) I forgot to mention that the beauty of using 1PCC for making NPCs is that you can also use it to see their behavior. That is incredibly useful to me.
Ooooh, I really like the idea of using the 1PCC to make a faction. That hadn't occurred to me. The beast could also have been made with the 1-Page Creature Crafter from MM34.
I use the 1-page character crafter for ALL my solo games. It is perfect for making NPCs, and I use it for making all my PCs too.
This is completely wrong and was invented by an online dice seller to create a fake controversy. In the 80s you'd just get two D10s labelled 0 to 9 of different colors, all manuals then explained that one (a common convention was the darkest) was used as first digit and the other as second digit, with 00 meaning 100. The relatively newer dice with 00, 10, 20, 30 , ... are not changing anything. Also this method can easily lead to errors (intentional or not) when people forget to add 10.
Interesting, thanks
This video is masterful! Such an incredible explanation, especially when something should be a thread vs character
Have you checked out the 1-page character Crafter from Mythic?
Ouh interesting! I was looking into the location crafter, but I gotta look into this one too
@ValTheVideomancer yeah! And the newest one is the 1-Page Mystery Crafter which is also amazing.
Thank you for reviewing this product. I had no idea there was a one page adventure crafter.
ok gotta try this! i was already a fan of the 1p mythic, so pairing this will help make things more free flow. thanks!!!
Great video! Regarding the probability of random events, with 1PM, the probability of a random event is 10%. With 2EM, it depends on the Chaos Factor, but it will always be less than 10% because the Chaos Factor only goes up to 9. I can´t clearly measure the interrupt scene probability because it depends on many variables, but overall, it will be lower than 10% for a lower Chaos Factor value and slightly higher otherwise. Cheers!
This is an amazing video. Well well done!
I'm going to give this a try using your suggestions for keeping scenes. Sounds like a winning combination to me.
Thank you for making this video. I hope you do the other one page things from Word Mill. 😊
I was thinking I would probably do the 1P adventure crafter next!
Great breakdown! Very useful!
I use 1p Mythic GME when I am travelling or trying out a new system. The simplicity makes it extremely useful for that. Also, I find that I don't have fewer random events because the chaos factor is always 10 for the purposes of random event generation.
Good vid.. I want to say that the one page is probably my favorite to use because its light and doesn't get in the way. I think the elimination of scenes was a brilliant move by Tana here. I think the whole scene thing confuses a lot of people who just want to play and don't understand scenes and how they work, allowing them to stop when they want. Far as descriptive words, you can still use as many of those charts or go on ChatGPT and have it make up custom ones for you. All in All, 1 Page is my fav.
I tried the 1p mythic on a pre-made module and it works really great for that! since your being some what guided and having mythic filling in the gaps made a easy to play experience.
all these solo rpg projects are doomed. Every video is about starting an adventure, and it never pans out. Aside from writers trying to sell you their books, the reason is obvious. You need a plot, and for a plot you need a plotter, someone who puts in a plot for you to discover and work with. I got 4AD and know these static tables never work.
Here's 3 full series I made with solo rpg rules: 1. Ralva (the one you commented on): ruclips.net/p/PLz1noTK4xRhRQlo-EE6jXVNBY7_sepThO. 2. Sariel and the Sword of Azathoth: ruclips.net/p/PLz1noTK4xRhQdxwaevvXwR1s87mI5SEYj. 3. Escape from the Smart-Tower: ruclips.net/p/PLz1noTK4xRhR-HAVcvSi9jgN69S91Guju.
Thank you for this. I really enjoyed this series; both the gameplay and the presentation were fantastic.
Hi, tahnks a lot for all the videos on SH o bought it Last year but Couldnt get into it... And your videos helped a lot. Did you try (would you do video) with the Blademaster hero? It IS for free on drivetroughrpg in one of "the Sand box" from the same publishing company. The fighter in the original game seems a bit bring to me and the blademaster sounds a bit more complex.
Looking forward to seeing you adapt a pre-written adventure. Keep up the good work!
I'm glad to see this series! I went ahead and did my own urban adventures only using scarlet heroes and I enjoyed it. The plot started as my fighter being a body guard that turn into a whole underground poison scheme! The rules set is bare bones so it's up to your imagination to come up with concepts, and even times my fighter felt too powerful (and he was a level 1!). But in the end, I think it gets the job done.
As a voice actor, I think having real voices over AI voices is going to be a massive improvement. Excited for what's to come!
Everytime I watch solo RPG videos, I always wonder whether the creators edit out the terrible dice rolls that would lead to a main character dying or being defeated. I was pleasantly surprised to see that commitment to authenticity here. Great video as always!
Great video! Ive only been using mythic about a year, on and off, so this was very helpful! Thank you, friend! 😊
Ralva: "Grab whatever you want as payment and leave." Worker: [casually hauls 500 lbs block of granite home]

Ralva is such a bad ass!
I already don’t like the Asian style art.
It was a turn off for me too. So I just take the rules and transfer them to a setting I actually like
You know it's getting real when the level 1 wizard starts throwing hands.
How would you play a detective game solo? Most of the fun is finding out whodunit.
It's not quite the same experience as playing an pre-written game, but I would basically use fate questions to figure out what are the facts, and make sense of them by process of elimination. Basically, you start with lots of options to explain what happened (ex: a murder) and by the time you have investigated the crime scene and the different leads, then you only have so many options left for what happened. Just like in a regular whodunit, there should be a moment where you say "this has to be it!" because all the other possibilities have been eliminated. If two possibilities have equal plausibility and you have run out of ways to test them, you can always ask a fate question (ex: was the murder actually an accident).
Hearing you say you'll be using stable diffusion feels like biting onto a piece of aluminum foil
It's not for everybody, but I find it works pretty well for fantasy adventures since you can illustrate what is happening very efficiently
@@ValTheVideomancer I do understand, it's just an inner reaction on my part. Still watching, just flinching periodically :)
I've never done any GMing, and a real life move forced me to have to learn solo if I wanted to continue to play tabletop. I've been struggling for months now to wrap my head around so many of the concepts. I understood the relation to scenes in a movie, but you've really given me some stuff to chew on with when, where and why to change scenes. Thank you.
More!
Would you be willing to do a video on the rules-light rpg in Mythic Magazine 31?
That's a great suggestion!
Awesome! I'll have to check this out.
this perfect timing as I'm just starting my first solo session and using an urban adventure from SH. I would love if you would also do a wilderness & dungeon series for SH similar to this. It's great intro content for SH and I feel that content is lacking on RUclips.
Hey thank you! I am definitely considering making a series where the adventure starts in the wilderness and ends in a dungeon, that way I'll have all three solo modes covered!
05:42, the fray die killed one of the bats, and then the spirit companion killed another. 3 bats should be left for the enemy turn,or am I misunderstanding something?
Unless I am missing something, Ralva used her main action to summon her spirit, then she used her fray die on the skeleton and he took 1 HD of damage (she is allowed to use her fray attacks on powerful enemies since she is a magic-user). Then, the spirit companion attacked the bats and killed one.
@@ValTheVideomancer Before the spirit attacks, you say 4 bats remains or something, hence my confusion. Anyways, thanks for the series, I will be following with great enthusiasm.
Do you roll for each centipede’s I thought you rolled for pack of creatures as if they are one?
In this case I attacked them individually because I rolled on the fight difficulty table (p.121) and it called for 3 rabble +1 veteran, so I needed 4 separate enemies. However, in some of my other adventures I have treated smaller enemies as pack creatures (ex: rats) where each "pack" would represent more than one creature, and I would have the pack share a single pool of HD. So basically you could do both ways, but to keep things balanced during urban adventures I would try sticking with the stats and number of enemies found in the tables from page 121.
I don't think I will
As a goblin, I welcome any goblin representation. If it comes at the expense of Ralva getting wrecked, so be it!
Ouch!
Thank you some much.
Can a plotline you scratch can came back. Exemple : with character return, you choose the magician and so defeat the magician is back on your list ?
Good question, I tried to find the answer in the rules but I couldn't find anything definitive. Here's how I would resolve this. In this example I would treat it as a new plotline. Ex: ''defeat the magician'' is crossed out every time it appeared, but you add one entry of ''defeat the zombie magician'' to your plotlines. This would be the way to do it if you are starting a new plotline when you roll for the character to return. But if the magician were to come back during another plotline (ex: Find the lost treasure), then it might work better to keep the returning character tied to the plotline you (re-)invoked him in. In this example, while the magician may have been its own plotline before, now you have to beat him again to get the treasure. TL;DR: 1. If the character returns during a turning point of ''new plotline'' then you can create a new plotline with a similar objective. 2. If the character returns during a ''plotline development'' then the character is now part of the selected plotline, so you will have to deal with them in one way or another to resolve this plotline.
@@ValTheVideomancer as I want to use it in comics books super heroes ttrpg (if I found a system I like) I would want ennemies to go back. For exemple : spidey have stories where he beat Sandman in one panel, other in a full book and other in a full story arc. He even help spidey sometime. An in Batman as long you didn’t have a corp you shouldn’t be sure Joker can’t came back, an Arkham adylium seem a place very easy to break out from.
@@joellechanu7789Since you are looking mainly for characters to come back, the rules may work well as they are. Otherwise, you could always make a list just for supervillains, and when it feels appropriate to invoke a character from that list, you roll specifically on it. Since you never want them to be completely gone, you just never cross their names from the list. And if they get defeated/killed in the adventure, then you just say they are out for the time of this adventure, unless a meta plot point brings them back.
What’s the difference between the first and second editions?
My answer may not be exact because I only read through mythic 1st edition, but as far as I know, they simplified the fate chart and tweaked a bunch of things, and they added the meaning tables. I think the first edition had a more complicated fate chart that allowed people to play the game more as a standalone rpg. For more info you can check out their website: www.wordmillgames.com/page/mythic-gme.html
Nice video, Vlad. It never occurred to me that 'Resit the Red Tide' was a form of magical resistance. I'm going to use this in my playthrough. Thanks 😊
