September Song
It’s time again to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall, time to play “September Song.” It was composed by Kurt Weill, with lyrics by Maxwell Anderson, for the Broadway musical Knickerbocker Holiday in 1938, and it’s withstood the test of time.
“Oh, it's a long, long while from May to December. But the days grow short when you reach September. When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame, one hasn't got time for the waiting game. Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few -- September, November. And these few precious days I'll spend with you These precious days I'll spend with you.”

Peggy Sue and That'll Be the Day
Просмотров 37День назад
Two wildly popular early rock songs Buddy Holly and the Crickets recorded in 1959. Tragically, Buddy died that year in a chartered plane crash at the age of 22, along with tour partners Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson, and the pilot, Roger Peterson. Who was Peggy Sue? She was Peggy Sue Gerron, girlfriend and future wife of the band’s drummer Jerry Allison.
Stand By Me

“Stand By Me” originated as a gospel hymn written by Philadelphia minister Charles Albert Tindley in 1905. It became a hit song when Ben E. King recorded it in 1961, and it was the title song for Rob Reiner’s 1986 film by the same name.

Two popular old blues tunes blended together. “Birth of the Blues,” title song from the 1942 film by the same name, was sung by Bing Crosby. "Basin Street Blues," recorded first by Louis Armstrong in 1929, became a Dixieland jazz band standard.

Written and recorded by the great musician-poet Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman) in 1962 and further popularized later by Peter, Paul & Mary and other artists.
Darling Je Vous Aime Beaucoup

The words and music were written by Anna Sosenko in 1935 and recorded by legendary cabaret singer Hildegarde (Heldegarde Loretta Sell). Sosenko was Heldegarde’s business manager and life partner. Over the years, nany other female and male artists have recorded it, including Nat King Cole, who, like Heldegarde, accompanied himself on piano.
The Entertainer

Practicing Scott Joplin’s classic 1902 ragtime song “The Entertainer” on my clunky old electric piano. A subscriber suggested I play some Joplin so I decided to give this tune a try. Might record it again later on the baby grand.

Joyful, rollicking country blues tune (music by Ray Henderson, lyrics by Sam Lewis and Joe Young) popularized by the late great Al Jolson in 1926. It’s been recorded since then by many artists, including Les Paul and Mary Ford, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin.

Folksy old song for my Boston friends wherever they now reside. It tells the sad story of a man forced to stay in a Metropolitan Transit Authority train because he couldn’t pay the fare increase. Two local folk musicians wrote the tune in 1948 as a campaign song for Progressive Party presidential candidate Walter O’Brien. The Kingston Trio popularized it in 1959.
Speak Softly Love and Charade

Two nice movie theme songs that fit together nicely despite having different time signatures. The first one, composed by Nino Rota, was the theme song from “The Godfather.” The second one, composed by Henry Mancini, was the theme song from “Charade.”

Great playing, great songs.
'Corny' songs are the best. Didn't Gerald Marks also pen a Christmas classic? Keep 'em coming. This is a fantastic part of our culture that needs to stay alive!
Nice. its nice to see people honor musicians with less notoriety than some of people we remember today.
Very nice
just sitting here and listen to your playing feels like all ive ever wanted!
Here’s a link to the Lincoln commercial with Beverly Kenney’s vocal in the background. She was an up-and-coming jazz singer who tragically died from a drug and alcohol overdose in her Greenwich Village flat in 1960 at the age of 28. The recording in the commercial comes from her 1957 album “Beverly Kenney Sings for Playboys.” Sadly, it was the biggest audience she ever had. www.ispot.tv/share/qx5l
