Gehenna isn't always just to "atone for your sins". Sometimes Gehenna is forever, stam as punishment. See: the very last perek in Yeshayahu, Daniel 2:12, Rosh HaShanah 17a(4), Chagiga 15a, Saadia Gaon Emunot vDeot, Reshit Chochma, just to name a few...
