Our Favorite Native Plants for SoCal Gardens | Ceanothus 'Concha' - Concha Wild Lilac
Concha Ceanothus, a hybrid of two species, is a standout California native shrub favored for its mounding growth, narrow glossy green leaves, and vibrant cobalt-blue flowers. It's notably one of the easier Ceanothus varieties to grow in Southern California home gardens. It tolerates inland garden conditions better than many other Ceanothus.
Ceanothus are important habitat plants for both butterflies and native pollinators.
For best results in inland gardens, plant Concha Ceanothus either somewhere that receives morning sun and afternoon shade or dappled part-sun throughout the day. It will tolerate full sun in many gardens, but thrives with a bit more shelter. While it adapts to heavy soils...

Our Favorite Native Plants for SoCal Gardens | Lilac Verbena - Verbena lilacina 'De La Mina'
Просмотров 210День назад
Lilac Verbena has gained popularity as a top butterfly-attracting plant in Inland Empire gardens, thanks to its extended flowering period from spring to summer. Native to Cedros Island off Baja California, this loosely mounding perennial grows to 2-3 ft. tall and 3-4 ft. wide, occasionally wider. A favored cultivar, V. l. ‘De La Mina’, is known for its uniform shape and deep purple flowers. Thr...

    Get rid of drip systems in native gardens. Drip was invented for agriculture and works great in an edible garden. Native plants die within a few years, using drip --- Natives do not like "wet feet". My 7 year old, native garden uses NO sprinklers or drip irrigation. 100% dependent on rainfall. Infrequent hand-water for new plantings. All hand watering in the establishment phase. No irrigation system can match the value and success of proper hand water soil hydration. Passive hydration happens via strategic rock/catch dam/dry bed and gravel features.

    LA City Sanitation website list locations for free mulch and two types of gardening soil. It is wonderful for sheet mulching. The locations listed are in East Los Angeles(near Boyle Heights, Elysian Valley, Griffith Park, Lopez Canyon Environmental Center (my favorite), Lincoln Heights, North Hollywood (near Burbank), San Pedro, Van Nuys(near D.C. Tillman Plant), and West LA.

    Cardboard contains tons of chemicals

    • @CBWCD
      @CBWCD Месяц назад

      Hello! This is definitely something you should consider when selecting cardboard to use in your garden. Always use cardboard that is free of dyes or only use cardboard that has soy based dyes. cardboard with glossy finishes should be avoided, always opt for a matte option. Brown and white cardboard that follow these guidelines are great for garden use. If you have any studies you would like to share regarding cardboard chemicals and their detriments, feel free to leave a link in this comment section!

    What about filling the hole with water 2x and waiting for it to drain before placing the plant?

    • @CBWCD
      @CBWCD 2 месяца назад

      Filling the hole with water once or twice before planting is a great technique as well! If that is working well for you, definitely do not stop! I often use that approach at home where I have very quickly draining soils, especially if I am plating into very dry soil. However, we find that for people who are working with slowly draining soil, especially with larger plantings, not all projects can accommodate the time it takes to wait for the soil to drain out of each hole, which on our site can be many hours in certain places. We find that by soaking the root ball to ensure it is saturated followed by filling the watering ring at least twice, if not a few more times just for the first planting (or running the irrigation system for a long deep soak the day of plating and potentially the next day as well), we achieve great results in a way that works for all soil types and all scales of planting. This is why we chose these techniques to profile in this post!

    Am i able to seed these in January- February?

    • @CBWCD
      @CBWCD 4 месяца назад

      Yes, though planting ASAP will give the best results! February would be on the VERY tail end of when I'd consider planting, but now should be just fine. Fall is ideal, but now definitely works! Since you are planting late, if we don't get another storm soon, you might water a bit once a week or so to make sure they germinate as quickly as possible and get growing in time for spring blooms.

    This was incredibly enlightening. I am actually in the SF Bay Area, but originally from SoCal and with climate change it is more similar now. Especially helpful was the storage of the water in the ground instead of in a tank. I have to say, your raised patio looks completely natural, like you just took a jack hammer to an existing slab! It is also interesting that you skipped the perforated PVC pipe in your French drain, I always thought that was necessary, but maybe not? Also, please, what are those plants in the front drain area that look like fountain grass?

    • @CBWCD
      @CBWCD 4 месяца назад

      Indeed, the patio is just a result of taking a jackhammer to an overly large and significantly cracked existing patio. PVC pipe in the french drain will help retain a larger flow capacity in a French drain, and will help move water faster if that is necessary, but is not always needed for the system to work, especially if a wide diameter gravel is used. I'm a fan of keeping it as simple as possible, so do not necessarily recommend it if not necessary. The plants that look like fountain grass are likely alkali sacaton (Sporobolus airoides), though a bit further back are also deergrass (Muhlenbergia rigens).

    Another excellent and informative video. Does the lumber need to be somewhat dry before putting it out? There is some pretty wet lumber at the big box stores. If viewers do not have plants in their yard like white sage, various size reeds can be purchased online at sites like Crown Bees.

    • @CBWCD
      @CBWCD 4 месяца назад

      My guess would be that while dryer would be better, unless the lumber is very, very wet still, it will not make much of a practical difference. These features will be outdoors, so though we create overhangs to keep the nests a bit on the dry side, the wood will be exposed to the weather. My only reservation would be that occasionally a pallet of wood at the store will be so wet that you can see some fungal growth due to both the moisture and the lack of air circulation when the wood is bound up in the palette. In those cases, I'd look for dryer wood.

    How do you keep weeds from growing?

    • @CBWCD
      @CBWCD 4 месяца назад

      Hand pulling. That said, if you know there are a lot of weeds in the soil in that area, I would dig the shape and depth of the water capture area, water for a while to flush as many weed seeds as possible, remove those weeds, and make sure all gravel is in around a 3" deep layer to help prevent new weeds from growing as much as is practical.

      Most sources recommend you place your bee hotel somewhere safe at least 3 feet off the ground. This is mostly to keep pests at bay; However, you can experiment and see what works best for you!
