I like your work
Thanks! :)
Heck yeah!
Plastic? Just paint the tanks black 🤦♂️
It's probably fine. I just don't want any chemicals possibly leaching through.
Can you buy black totes or is there an issue using black "plastic?"
No. I did find an aluminum coating IBC tote but it is rare. According to AI, "spray paints can potentially leach through an IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) tote made of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate), especially if the paints contain solvents or harsh chemicals. PET is relatively resistant to many chemicals, but it may not be completely impervious to all types of solvents or aggressive substances found in certain spray paints." I play it safe and use the plastic liner since I drink the water. But there are some covers on Amazon that do work but don't last long UNLESS you add the special cover you'll see in my Rainwater System Update video coming out June 10th 2024.
❤❤❤
:)
Very informative. Thank you. If I were to build a system with only one IBC how would you go about to install an air outlet to release the pressure when it fills up?
I have a new overflow system featured in my Rainwater System Update video coming out June 10th 2024. It works well with one tank.
Overall, great system that I have built (twice). However, there is a modification to assist. The connection at the tank, if not perfectly tight (should also use teflon tape) you will have a very small leak (you will not realize it until everything is connected in permanently and you have water in the tanks). Once all connected, with this version, you can never service the tank connection point, Shouldn't need to, but it's possible. May need to move or add other tanks/components. To make the system serviceable, use a flexible coupling between the tank and the connecting pipe. This allows for disconnection and reconnection, should any need arise. I got algea at the points where light could still get into the tank (connection point and near the top cap, which meant I had to take them down, clean and correct my mistake. I also know that I will add more tanks in the future. Thanks
Thanks for sharing! I am glad you like the rainwater system. I am showing an update on my system Monday June 10th with some new features. This may fix the leak issue.
@@naturehacker1095 Look forward to it. BTW, hopefully you are also adding a level indicator. I never added one on mine and had an inadvertent draining (transferring water) far more than I wanted because I was guessing. Im adding one now, using clear PVC tube, but I have to cut a piece and reattach to add the indicator. Also (reason I had to take things apart) I added a low point drain for the freezing weather we get in TX. I had several pipes crack because I did not drain them properly so I added a low point drain that ensures all water is out of the pipes during this time period.
@@araimis The video is now posted and yeas- there is a water indicator added but not one on the side. Too many issues with algae growth and so on.
This is an outstanding video, definitely the easiest to understand and best explained video about rainwater catchment ive come across. And this system will be perfect in my allotment here in the uk. Thank you
Glad it was helpful! I am posting an update video on Monday June 10th. I hope you get to see it. :)
Will a 6 1/2" IBC cap with 2" plug fit all 275 gallon IBC totes?
I believe all the caps are the same size. Even the 300 gallon ones.
Thank you for responding
How difficult is it too add more tires to this without taking the system apart? Also it's the water actually, readily drinkable just after 1st flush and filtration focused on debris/sediment? What about the protozoa, bacteria, microbes, etc?
I use a Berkey filter to drink from my tanks. You need to filter out the bacteria with a high quality filter or UV light. A BRITA filter for example will not take out the bacteria. If you plan to upgrade in the future, make the ends a little longer so you can cut them later and then attach the 2 inch pipe from the new tanks using a 2" PVC coupler. And moving the system is easy. I cut the bottom pipe in the center and then reattached them at the new house using a 2" coupler. Just make sure to use PVC cement on all bottom pipes. The rest don't need glue.
so 2 in. PVC Schedule 40 Female S x FPT Adapter will connect to the outlet of my IBC?
Nature Hacker , you ARE AWESOME!!!! in this ‘how to video on rain water’ Kudos to you👍👍👍👍
Thanks! I have my 2024 Update Video coming out June 10th. Check it out!
JUst a Great Video ! Covered everything really well with detail ! Many thanks !! Rainwater is a wasted redource !Can't wait to start my setup
amazing video and this is the reason youtube is the absolute best thing ever invented in the history of inventions. The best free information a man could ask for and allows the average Joe to learn anything free of charge and its because of people like you showing us how to do vids step by step makes it so easy a monkey could do it.
Is the list of items free or does it need to be purchased?
Would painting the totes black be another way to make them opaque and prevent algae growth?
I used spray paint.
One criticism, on the end tank you put a thin milky liquid on the black pipe coming out of the tank. But it wasn't clear what that was. Was it pvc glue or something different?
What if I just paint the tank black?
Ikg bananaa gives how much banana fîour. Please guide .
Would you collect rain from an asphalt shingle roof?
$12 for 100sq ft on the paver base? They are like $12 EACH!
What about spray painting the white totes to black with UV resistant paint? Won't that help things further with algae control?
It can but the plastic is slightly permeable so you take a risk with chemicals. There are also covers you can buy on Amazon that cost about $30-$50. I can’t guarantee the quality. This plastic sheeting is going on 4 years and hasn’t changed a bit. I have a new video and ebook coming out soon with the cover I built that keeps the system super cool in these hot months. Stay tuned…
Thank you Nature Hacker. A very organized set of instructions.
You're welcome!
Great video with a lot of good info but can add a few things. The top of the IBCs do need to be tight for the overflow to work or the water will just leak out before building the head to overflow. Rather easy to add a standpipe. There are various types of threads on the IBC outlet, even in the USA, so good to check. There are adapters for the other types available online but not as convenient. The other thing worth checking is the original use of the ibc. If it’s not food grade you could be introducing nasty chemicals into your food via the water. Lastly, calling the water in the tote clean is a relative misnomer. It is cleaner but is definitely not drinking water cleaner outside of third world countries where waterborne diseases are just a part of life. It could be further treated to achieve drinking water clean.
Thanks for the comments. Yes, I cover these details in my new rainwater book on building this system. I also add the option to do the overflow from the side which eliminates the need to tighten the top caps and let the air out as the water fills up. Leaks could happen if the top caps are loose when the overflow comes from the top so I have the side option for those with a system in their basement, barn, etc. And yes to rainwater having some air particles and microbes. I used a Berkey to filter the water as a secondary filtration and didn't have any issues. I hope to put an update out soon on how the system is doing. Still going strong!
Thank you for the great video! How is this system working a few years later? Have you had to make any updates or adjustments?
What size are the pans? Highest temperature?
Hey thanks for all the details 🙏 I learned that the water outlet should be 50 mm above the ground. The problem I see with the IBC is that the outlet is right at the bottom. How you handle this or is it not so important to have these extra 50mm for sludge building?
Should call your channel...ass hacker lol
Love the concept! Was wondering if you had a ball park estimate on how much this costed in total for every part including tanks
I haven’t added up all the numbers, but I provide a parts list and prices and purchase links for the system in my new illustrated e-guide that can be purchased through the link in the video description. My estimate is around $500 but it depends on the cost of the totes. That will vary depending on what is available to you. I paid $100 each for mine. I also provide cost saving tips in the guide if cost is a factor for you. For example, you can buy the first flush diverter kit for $60 or make it yourself cheaper which is what I do now. I show you how to do it in the e-guide.
Awesome shirt!
Being that is methane(I believe) wouldn't it be better to cook on patio?
Hello. Since the biogas system is outside, most users cook outside on a patio or outdoor kitchen. My stove at my new house is just outside my door on my patio. However, you can retrofit a burner on your gas stove to fit biogas methane. But I would turn on a stove fan to remove any fumes from gas cooking.
I have a question about the overflow. You mentioned loosening the caps on the top to allow air to leave while filling. Once full, wouldn't the water just flow out of the loosened caps instead of the overflow above?
There’s a few options. You can put the caps on and then twist a few times to keep them from coming off and that lets the air leave the tanks. An alternative is to cut a hole on the side of one tank near the top and insert a rubber grommet and then insert pvc pipe. 1.5 inch is all you need and that will take the overflow wherever you want to go. So the water level will stop at that hole and the water will flow out and never touch the top caps. I’m going to try the second way on a new system I built just to show how it’s done. But the method I used in this video has been working for 3 years now. I’ll do an update video with popular questions answered soon.
@john - Yes. Screw them on tight, then drill a hole to insert a water tight fitting to extend a standpipe higher than the overflow. Add a lose cap to keep mosquitoes out.
Do you recommend adding the standpipe to the screw on lid or the top of the IBC tank? I'm just trying to picture what you are recommending as I came here wondering why the water wouldn't just escape out of the loosened cap.
This person has a metal roof. Any suggestions on what can be done/added to keep water clean from contaminants from a shingle roof? Thanks for this great video.
Could painting the container with black paint work as well?
Thanks for this information. I’m definitely going to incorporate this system in my yard. I like that everything is easily accessible from the bottom to the top. My only issue is what do you do to prevent critters from moving under your containers? Joe long does it last? I live in San Diego and it’s finally raining. I’m thinking about stacking 3 tanks and somebody prevent rodents and insects from moving in.
I never had anything go under my tanks but it’s not hard to run some hardware cloth/chicken wire around the bottom to keep rodents out. The metal frame of the totes makes it easy to secure it to the tote and then you can bury the wire a few inches deep into the ground to keep a rodent from getting in. I’m not sure they would do too much if they were under there anyway.
If you stack IBCs, make sure you are providing lateral support. That’s a lotta lotta weight up high that could cause catastrophic damage if it gets much of any lateral force.

Excellent. Tks
Nice detail in your video. You explain things that others assume their viewers will know.
Thanks! I hope it helps you with your future water projects.
Hi..How long can we keep this flour?
Why not just paint the tank? Why use plastic wrap instead?
thanks
Just wonder whether matt black spray paint would be better than the PVC liner
rain water has nothing in it distilled
I am in Orlando and currently trying to install a rain water catch system recently installed shallow well definitely need to check out Orlando Permaculture to see if you guys can assistlol ❤😂
Best video on setting up a rain collection system! I appreciate you explaining it in a way that a newbie like me can understand. Not sure what the pavers cost in 2019, but 100sq is over $250. It's $11 for one paver. Thanks again for the video!
Haha Yeah. I realized this AFTER I made the video. I brought the box of pavers to the register and the employee must have scanned ONE of the pavers and it rang up to $12. I guess we both had no idea that it was only for one paver!! I bought two boxes this way for the same price for each system that I built and they made the mistake both times. Honestly, I had no idea the pavers were $12 each.
We have a rainwater collection system that consists of 12 275 gallon totes which receive water off 3 different buildings on our property. We have used the system for the past 4 years. It started with just 2 IBC totes and has grown. We love not having a water bill. My question is: How do you totally empty and clean these totes? I don't see much online about this. I know they need cleaning as they do get some ugly stuff gathering at the bottom. Is there some type of pump that is cost effective and will get all the last few inches out of the bottom of the totes? Is it possible to rig something up? The bottom of a tote is not flat. It is molded with lower and higher areas on the bottom. How are other people doing it? I picture getting a small pump and maybe getting down into the tank bottom with some PVC pipe to pump out that last few gallons of not very good looking water. Then maybe using a long scrub brush of some sort. Then pumping again until it's all clean. Comments and suggestions welcome.
is it safe to drink the water or do i have to boil it?
your t-shirt reads "there is no planet b". that sounds like a indoctrination of you. iam very sure that the planet will exists many million years longer than the mankind will.
I agree! The Earth will exist long after we are gone. My shirt means there is no other planet right now that can keep us alive so we need to keep this one healthy. We can easily reverse the course by building healthy soil, converting lawns to edible medicinal gardens and xeriscaping and using government tax incentives to add heat pumps and other renewable tech to our homes.
