      @@MarquisVonLion We are using plastic but reducing the need for single use plastic by repurposing IBC totes. If you use a metal cistern for example which is very expensive and outside the budget of most Americans, even those are lined with a thin plastic layer. The alternative is drinking out of plastic gallon jugs or being lucky enough to have well water or a mountain spring near your home.

    If I leave the top cap slightly open for air to move through, won't that make the water to leak once the tank is full?

    • @naturehacker1095
      @naturehacker1095 5 месяцев назад

      With the new overflow system shown in this video, the overflow pipe is a few inches lower than the top caps so when the water level gets to the height of the overflow pipe, it will quickly flow down the overflow pipe and the water level will never reach the height of the caps. It is leak proof! For the old system, there is a possibility of leaking with the caps loose so that is why I changed the design.

    • @naturehacker1095
      @naturehacker1095 5 месяцев назад

      No. I did find an aluminum coating IBC tote but it is rare. According to AI, "spray paints can potentially leach through an IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) tote made of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate), especially if the paints contain solvents or harsh chemicals. PET is relatively resistant to many chemicals, but it may not be completely impervious to all types of solvents or aggressive substances found in certain spray paints." I play it safe and use the plastic liner since I drink the water. But there are some covers on Amazon that do work but don't last long UNLESS you add the special cover you'll see in my Rainwater System Update video coming out June 10th 2024.

  • @araimis

    Overall, great system that I have built (twice). However, there is a modification to assist. The connection at the tank, if not perfectly tight (should also use teflon tape) you will have a very small leak (you will not realize it until everything is connected in permanently and you have water in the tanks). Once all connected, with this version, you can never service the tank connection point, Shouldn't need to, but it's possible. May need to move or add other tanks/components. To make the system serviceable, use a flexible coupling between the tank and the connecting pipe. This allows for disconnection and reconnection, should any need arise. I got algea at the points where light could still get into the tank (connection point and near the top cap, which meant I had to take them down, clean and correct my mistake. I also know that I will add more tanks in the future. Thanks

      @@naturehacker1095 Look forward to it. BTW, hopefully you are also adding a level indicator. I never added one on mine and had an inadvertent draining (transferring water) far more than I wanted because I was guessing. Im adding one now, using clear PVC tube, but I have to cut a piece and reattach to add the indicator. Also (reason I had to take things apart) I added a low point drain for the freezing weather we get in TX. I had several pipes crack because I did not drain them properly so I added a low point drain that ensures all water is out of the pipes during this time period.

    How difficult is it too add more tires to this without taking the system apart? Also it's the water actually, readily drinkable just after 1st flush and filtration focused on debris/sediment? What about the protozoa, bacteria, microbes, etc?

    • @naturehacker1095
      @naturehacker1095 5 месяцев назад

      I use a Berkey filter to drink from my tanks. You need to filter out the bacteria with a high quality filter or UV light. A BRITA filter for example will not take out the bacteria. If you plan to upgrade in the future, make the ends a little longer so you can cut them later and then attach the 2 inch pipe from the new tanks using a 2" PVC coupler. And moving the system is easy. I cut the bottom pipe in the center and then reattached them at the new house using a 2" coupler. Just make sure to use PVC cement on all bottom pipes. The rest don't need glue.

    Great video with a lot of good info but can add a few things. The top of the IBCs do need to be tight for the overflow to work or the water will just leak out before building the head to overflow. Rather easy to add a standpipe. There are various types of threads on the IBC outlet, even in the USA, so good to check. There are adapters for the other types available online but not as convenient. The other thing worth checking is the original use of the ibc. If it’s not food grade you could be introducing nasty chemicals into your food via the water. Lastly, calling the water in the tote clean is a relative misnomer. It is cleaner but is definitely not drinking water cleaner outside of third world countries where waterborne diseases are just a part of life. It could be further treated to achieve drinking water clean.

      Thanks for the comments. Yes, I cover these details in my new rainwater book on building this system. I also add the option to do the overflow from the side which eliminates the need to tighten the top caps and let the air out as the water fills up. Leaks could happen if the top caps are loose when the overflow comes from the top so I have the side option for those with a system in their basement, barn, etc. And yes to rainwater having some air particles and microbes. I used a Berkey to filter the water as a secondary filtration and didn't have any issues. I hope to put an update out soon on how the system is doing. Still going strong!

      I haven’t added up all the numbers, but I provide a parts list and prices and purchase links for the system in my new illustrated e-guide that can be purchased through the link in the video description. My estimate is around $500 but it depends on the cost of the totes. That will vary depending on what is available to you. I paid $100 each for mine. I also provide cost saving tips in the guide if cost is a factor for you. For example, you can buy the first flush diverter kit for $60 or make it yourself cheaper which is what I do now. I show you how to do it in the e-guide.

    I have a question about the overflow. You mentioned loosening the caps on the top to allow air to leave while filling. Once full, wouldn't the water just flow out of the loosened caps instead of the overflow above?

    • @naturehacker1095
      @naturehacker1095 Год назад

      There’s a few options. You can put the caps on and then twist a few times to keep them from coming off and that lets the air leave the tanks. An alternative is to cut a hole on the side of one tank near the top and insert a rubber grommet and then insert pvc pipe. 1.5 inch is all you need and that will take the overflow wherever you want to go. So the water level will stop at that hole and the water will flow out and never touch the top caps. I’m going to try the second way on a new system I built just to show how it’s done. But the method I used in this video has been working for 3 years now. I’ll do an update video with popular questions answered soon.

    • @johnlee7085

      @hotblack1166 6 месяцев назад

      Do you recommend adding the standpipe to the screw on lid or the top of the IBC tank? I'm just trying to picture what you are recommending as I came here wondering why the water wouldn't just escape out of the loosened cap.
