On this episode of Small Sailboat, Big Adventures we try to head out on a two week trip but get turned back from rough conditions and a worsening forecast. I spent one night anchored out on the east river in Mathews, VA off of Mobjack bay.

We had decently heavy rains leading up to this weekend and the river level was measured to be 2000 CFS at Palmyra when we put in. We were originally going to do the day before but due to the rains it was at 3000 CFS and we were concerned that could be a little too...

We kayaked the two miles from Darden Towe park to Riverview Park. The water flow was measured at 520 CFS at Palmyra, which is on the lower end of what you can paddle for this stretch of the river. We hit rocks a couple of times because of it, but our 14 foot Hobie Odyssey is a tandem kayak and has a molded in skeg at the back that draws a little deeper than your average yak. We kayaked the farmville blueway! It started by paddling across lake Wilck's lake to the southwest corner at a well signed takeout where you portage to Buffalo Creek. You then paddle down Buffalo Creek until it meets up with the Appomattox River. The take out is also well signed.
