    It just cracks me up that Harley is still addressing all these engine problems and still can't come up with a dependable, powerful engine that you don't have to dump tons of money into to get it running right. It's uncanny that the metric models (Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha) can come out with so many different models, and get it right the FIRST time with no problems. Now I'm not saying all of them are perfect, but most of them are very dependable and powerful for their size. With the prices of Harleys, you'd think they would get it right by now.

    I am the original owner of a 2005 FLSTCI, with 108,000 kilometers on it. I just learned about this problem a week ago. Pulled off the cam cover and sure as hell, the outer tensioner shoe was broken. Luckily, there was no metal contacting the chain. Unfortunately, the outer chain guide broke as soon as I moved the tabs to take it out. The inner tensioner has very little wear. Why HD didn't build these engines with geared cams, I can't understand.

    Not only cam tensioners are a go. Cam plate and HD bearings as well are faulty issue as the plate suddenly can loose pressure affecting directly the bearings specifically the cage that has individual restrain for each roller making it a potential disaster that ocurred on my ultra limited 103 2014 with 15k on odometer costing me about 2500 on labor and parts (pistons,cams,oil pump,cam plate, gaskets,oil...) i love my bike but it is outreageous how HARLEY DAVIDSON CO. ignores it and make us pay for their engineers mishap.... as a scheduled low mileage open engine high costo maintenance..

    • @BLAKHARTFILM
      @BLAKHARTFILM 3 года назад

      I assume you are saying that the oil pressure can drop. I was wondering about that as my oil light comes on with a cold start, at idle.. If I increase the rpm, the light goes out. It also goes out once the engine has warmed.

  • @bigwu100

    Timing chain is old tech. As is tensioners. I cant see where its not a maintenance item. For instance my lexus has to have timing belt changed every 50k and failure to do so could result in damage to your engine. What is the difference?

  • @leocapoccia9073
    @leocapoccia9073 3 года назад

    The best way to fix this is throw out the chain and tensioner and replace the cams with a gear drive system. It’s a little pricey but you’ll eliminate the crappy HD design flaw that the motor company refuses to even acknowledge.

    The thing I don’t understand is why hasn’t someone made cam tensioners with rubber based shoes and a springs with less tension pressure. It seems that to go down the route of a new cam plate and hydraulic tensioners or gear drive is a sledge hammer to crack a walnut. I own an 88 Twin Cam and really can’t see why so much expense and controversy is involved in such a simple fix. Less tension on the shoes coupled with different tensioner material should cure the problem; or at least alleviate it. In my book this is a scam to get owners to shell out unnecessary cash. Just my opinion.

    Have an 02 Fatboy with almost 30k. I’m original owner. I took the chest cover off a couple years ago and could see the outside shoe was half worn, but after finagling a bit, I could see the inner pad was 3/4 worn through. I decided to upgrade to hydraulic tensioners and an upgraded plate. While the tech was in there, I had the lifters upgraded, bearings replaced, and the upper rocker box gaskets and breathers replaced (since it was being taken apart anyways). Left the cam as stock as I was happy with the stock cam performance. With parts and labor, cost me about $1300 and three days waiting (dealer was extremely busy). Tech told me no need to replace my stock cams(thought it would be needed), he said there was literally no wear on the cam lobes. 👍 I preform oil/fluid change in the three holes every year before winter regardless of mileage. Cheap insurance and it obviously paid off. I’ve put about another 1k since the service and no issues. I figured with the updated plate/oil pump and bearings, it is FINALLY corrected to what it should have been years ago. Also, as I mentioned, the cam bearings were replaced, which when these bikes originally came out, 2001/2002, there was a recall on certain vin models because of faulty bearings, it affected a small number of bikes, but I have always been worried about “if” or “when” mine would go. Glad those were replaced at this service for peace of mind. Just my 2 cents.

      I learned about that problem after buying a nice '02 Road King w/32 k on it from a fussy guy back in June, 2016. He knew nothing about the problem after I bought it and said he wouldn't worry about it since there's no odd noises. I worry and believed others and pulled it down. Yup, a chunk was broke off the inside shoe but I found everything so all is good. I installed a Screaming Eagle Hydraulic Cam plate, new cam bearings, new lifters, S&S quickie push rods and called it good. It's a great engine but just need to do some preventive work. Just part of owning an old Harley. Please don't wait until you hear some noises. I also have a '99 Evo Fat Boy, both are carbs, Lol. Love em both.

    I am still coming to grips with this design flaw on my bike and my wife's bike. I can say for certain, it has cost HD two future sales. I inspected one bike at 19K miles and the inner and outer tensioners look good, so I should get to 30K miles on that bike. However, as an engineer with 30 years experience wrenching motorcycles, this is not a maintenance issue, it is a design miss on HD's part.

      e b thanks for the response. Yes I’m likely going with the hydraulic and just going to order one in winter and have installed during the coldest month here. I’d rather order it and have it done and finished (or perhaps do it myself with a buddy over a weekend ) and have no worries. My Low Rider had 13,000 miles when I bought it last year and has been a constant source of grief. The small things were small but there were so many that it was like “death by a thousand paper cuts”. The stator melted this summer and that was a pretty penny. Both engine mounts and swing arm bearing. The list goes on and on and on. I figure the hydraulic tensioners will be the last thing. But Who knows what surprises await with this bike. First and last Harley. I rode an Indian scout a month ago and it’s on my mind.

      @@shizuokaBLUES wow, those are some issues. My only complaint about HD is the cam chain tensioners. I have a 2003 road king and 2005 Deluxe. Both have been problem free, but have low miles. The cam chain tensioners took me away from HD because HD knew they sold me a defective product, and the result is my lost busines.
