    I read somewhere that it is not necessary to use borax when soldering on coal, as coal when heated gives off carbon, which does not allow the metal to oxidize.

    • @tyler5120
      @tyler5120 Месяц назад

      If your coal is getting that hot so that it gives off enough carbon to stop oxidation, your metals are already wayyyyyy melted.

    In the first video you said you used hard solder. But for the past couple of years after goldsmith…actually they should be called silver smooth courses…I land through watching a series of jewelry video like yours I learned I should only ever use use soft gold solder and medium silver solder if doing silver work. As the soft silver will run. But I Neil burn my bezels using anything other than soft sheet solder on my gold pieces. Is this why I am still ruining my gold bezels? Or need to fix and patch them?

    Nice model though I would route out the middle of the anvil leaving the top of the inside shank open to reduce weight and metal cost. This probably would require entering through the top of the ring and then installing a thin insert.

  • @malcolmthompson9848
    @malcolmthompson9848 Год назад

    Excellent video. I have always soldered bezel to plates by heating from below. I have had problems with solder climbing up the bezel when I heat from above. As far as placing solder chips on the outside , the one draw back is that the excess material becomes contaminated with solder and therefore cannot be remelted to make new stock. Finally, I used to sand my solder joints as I went as you recommend, however, others have pointed out that leaving surplus solder on bezels may prevent the flushing out of bezel seams during subsequent heatings. Now as long as they are accessible, I clean up my seams after final assembly.
