Do a calculation of what amperage you need at 220 volts to charge a battery in 9 minutes and then double it if you are on 110v as in North America. The only way I can see this happening is at central charging stations with massive batteries to store power over time and deliver it to the car at this rate. The bus bars necessary to transport such huge amperages from the battery to the car will be something to see. Factor in the upgrades needed to the grid to achieve such rapid charging and what this will cost.

Most of you already know if you want to fast charge a Tesla at home you need to upgrade the power line and power panel to have fast charging; or you'd be limited to existing 220 or 110v. To have an even faster charge you'd need not just an upgraded panel but an entire new "bigger pipe" run all the way to your power substation - very very costly not going to happen. Another way to do it is have a giant battery - like a small water tank - inside your home - use a smaller pipe to fill it all day - but then - use a 3 inch pipe from the home tank to the car - that is very costly also. If you were trying to do that for huge trucks or large numbers of cars - you'd need giant batteries to do it at ever charge point - sort of stupid right?

Unless the batteries have less capacity they won't charge faster - without new infrastructure- If you have a 81 kWh battery - the source of the power limits how fast you can charge. No matter what the technology is, a 81kWh battery holds 81 kWh and you must fill it with the same amount of electricity. Electrical power is akin to a water system - if you have a 5000 gallon tank the only to transfer more water through it is to make bigger pipes. So if your pipes are 1 inch - it doesnt matter if your battery has a 3 inch pipe -your water system only has a 1 inch. The US power system has no 3 inch infrastructure outside commeria areas - even then if you had a lot of cars capable of accepting 3 inch pipes they'd just drain the 5000 gallon tank faster so emptying it.
