10 Facts and Myths about RACIAL DISCRIMINATION
Yeah Coltrane sucked.
HOW could you miss ERROLL GARNER ???????????????
Nice to see so many people enjoyed Jazz. Each player listed had style. What makes the difference is knowing how to play a ballad. And, in that vein, Bill Evans was supreme. He was the Rubenstein of jazz.
So many great players, each one building upon the next, from generation to generation... how can Jellyroll Morton, Fatha Hines, Fats Waller, Errol Garner, or King Cole be excluded from such a so-called greatest list...??
No Bill Evans? Really? He belonged on this list right after Bud Powell.
Falta Fats Walter, que debe estar entre los diez. Donde lo ponemos?
You sir, will not get one single bit of resistance or disagreement from me with this list!!! I'm so happy Bill Evans made the 10 ten as I was rooting for him. But I whole-heartedly agree with this list.
Bill Evans is not on the to 10 list, but he should have been.
No Errol Garner. 😢
Great list, but I don't see how Bill Evans doesn't make better than the group at "10."
Sorry, Buddy Rich IS number 1.
Why are most of them black men??😊
Is this a serious question or are you a troll? I will give you my response when you reply.
@anthonym4392 I'm truly curious, please elaborate further sir.
Jazz is an American way of playing music. It is also a repertory which formalizes is various stages of development into classical styles which musically articulate authentic American feelings and thoughts. As a classical music with its own standards of form, complexity, literacy and excellence, jazz has been a major influence on the music of the world for more than 80 years. Although jazz had influenced other styles of music and, in turn, had been influenced by them, it has its own undeniable identity firmly rooted in the African musical tradition. Jazz emerged from the need of black Americans to express themselves in musical terms. This need for self expression stemmed directly from the African musical heritage. In African societies, music was essential in cementing together a culture, cementing together a culture, perpetuating cultural continuance, enforcing the moral and spiritual order, allowing one to express oneself and helping an individual adjust to group norms. Direct quote from Dr. Billy Taylor. From his book 'Jazz Piano, a Jazz History.' (C)1982
Monk is my favorite followed by Tatum. I recently had an article on Monk's albums published on the Tracking Angle site. WOW just saw you got these two on top too. But don't like to say "best" I prefer "favorite"
Monk was not a great pianist -- he was a one-of-a-kind-musician belonging in his own niche--but not 2nd to the great Art Tatum. No arguments about Duke and Bud, but Bill Evans belongs above Herbie, Chick and Keith. Miles said "Bill Evans is my al-time favorite pianist." Bill was not a one-trick pony. He played denser chords and more complex harmonies, and brought out all the inner voices--far more than Keith, Herbie, Chick, the youngsters who followed him. Bill was never "fusion" or electronics"; he mastered the standards yet "opened up" the music to modes. And he kept growing: His first trio with LaFaro was Ravel impressionism: his last was Rachmaninoff expressionism.. (Listen to all 8 nights of "Consecration" and "Last Dance," which he recorded a week before his death.) In a book about the 100 greatest, most important jazz pianists, Bill Evans is ranked right after Tatum., at #2.
I totally disagree with you. What made Thelonious Monk unique was his angular approach to composing and even in improvisation. I was in a unique situation many years ago, where I was the driver for Walter Bishop Jr. on his way back to NYC after the workshop/classes at the Hartt School of Music of which i was a budding jazz pianist under the tutelage of Jaki Byard. I'm in a unique position because I hear 'second hand stories, straight from the man who was there!! There were great musicians who could not/or refused to play with Monk because of his approach to comping. (Miles Davis being one of them) Maybe that is why Charlie Rouse is in my top three greatest tenors. (but that's for another time). Walter Bishop Jr used to tell me this story on our many trips. "when Monk used to take his solos and made several dissonances as he played that made it sound like wrong notes, he use to repeat the same thing again so you know that was exactly what he meant to play" another story he use to tell was that monk would always refuse to show him stuff on the piano. He would always say "go make up your own"! I remember that quote verbatim. That approach to composition and he angular style of playing and unique approach to composition, definitely makes him earn that position.
Well, that's one way of looking at jazz piano.
Ok lol sorry that first quote was the dumbest thing about music ive ever heard...like..., (hippy stoner voice) "when you think about the wiiind man, ya gotta Iike, i dont know, Feeel it on you...ya know? Like...the way it actually feels windy when it blows on you..."
Eugen Cicero?
No Joe Morello on this list; utter crap.
Where’s Rollins? Great list btw I just think he should be on here.
Rollins is at 1:52 there was more than one #1
Tony Williams? Billy cobham? You must be kidding me! I don't see art taylor, Luis hayes, Allan dawson or Joe morello. Max roach is the greatest drummer of all time. Big Sid catlett Belongs on any list of great drummers.
This list is just not acceptable, do you listen to jazz at all? No phinas newborn, no Jackie byard, no Andrew hill or Horace silver!! You definitely need to be educated.
What about Joe Sample?
k I'll add Michel Petrucciani... for real
Thanks Tzivia, Love it, I'am proud of you, it's really amazing.

Pretty predictable list, mostly incomplete and wrong in spots. Monk and Ellington are NOT and never has been great pianists. Earl Hines, Erroll Garner, Nat Cole, Teddy.Wilson, Phineas Newborn, Red Garland, Cedar Walton, Tommy Flanagan are all better that "in vogue" piano players Hancock, Corea and Jarrett.
Monk is one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. A complete genius, who sonny rollins, Ernie henny and john Coltrane had difficulty playing this compositions. You show extreme ignorance. Do you have a clue what jazz music is?
@@josephgutkowski2059 Monk´s playing is genius. He was not a technical virtuoso like for example Peterson, but his creativity, concept and expression was second to none. Music is art, and Monk was a true artist.
Nadie mejor que Jarrett 😊desde mi ignorancia.

Are apples better than oranges? This is not the correct way to pose the question. A better way to do that would be YOUR TASTE OR PREFERENCE IN JAZZ PIANISTS. And then all comments would fall into place and apply. You would recognize Oscar without seeing him play, as somebody else would recognize Ahmad Jamal, or Michel Petrucciani. That means that each pianist has a recognizable "mode" or pattern in the way they play, their own inimitale (or imitable?) signature style, which makes each of them unique and liked. Tastes differ.
For me, there's Oscar then everyone else. Virtuoso master.
But Oscar has no style, just instrumental ability! Not interesting at ALLLLL!

Oh yes Johnny Hedge, my favorite alto player
The best two are Tatum and Evans. Everyone else follows from them. There is no Hancock, Corea or Jarrett without Evans. No Powell without Tatum. Tyner was unique but borrowed chord structure from Evans. All were great. It is a good list, just not in the right order
Yh tyner surpassed bill
Claude Thornhill, the one and only!
It;s obvious that this list is purely subjective as it didn't include a drummer that young drummers today are still learning from that being Joe Morello late of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. His 6 drum solos (together on one cut) recorded in Carnegie Hall, New York in 1963 is still required as essential for the upcoming drummer. Morello was not as fast as Buddy Rich but speed is not the mark of the best, most imaginative drummer. Just listen to that famous Brubeck Carnegie Hall album to get a sense of the real Morello. He is recorded getting sounds out of drum stick itself that I've never heard any other drummer get. Go ahead and listen to the faster, louder drummers but for the purist drummer afficionado Morello comes out on top
Great list! Ella and Billie, for sure the best female vocalists ever. I don't know what Chet Baker is doing here. I would take him out and substitute for Bobby McFerrin, who is a better vocalist or for Ray Charles if R&B is included here.
This is a very interesting comment. Thank you.
If we lncluded all the pianists people say should be on this list: the 10 mentioned would NOT be on the list!
Naming 2 people above Oscar Peterson is about like saying 2 people are better than WNC!
WTF are Ramsey Lewis -Billy Taylor & Dave Brubeck?
dave bruback and jelly roll morton should be high on the list.
So many good pianists in jazz, in fact I would argue that there more exponents on that instrument than any other,, which is good if the piano happens to be your favourite instrument and in my case it is! Producing any form of list that attempts to define the important ones, or even your own favourites is therefore not easy, so I am not going to take issue with those selected here, except to say that to leave out Earl Hines, given the influence he had on others as well as his own ability of course, was a gross omission!
Bill evans is without doubt the biggestvinfluence on any jazzpianist of today
C,mon man get serious where is Blakey ,Elvin Jones ?
No Barry Harris?!
My three preferred ones are Bill Evans, Ahmad Jamal and Oscar Peterson. T Monk would be the fourth one. And what'bout Billy Strayhorn ⁉️ ➖😔🙏
Strayhorn, like Monk was a great composer not a virtuoso pianist.
missing are Jelly Roll Morton, Earl Hines, James P. Johnson and Cecil Taylor. Make it the top 15 and and add these 4. Maybe, off the top of my head, add Horace Silver and you have 15.
Teddy Wilson
@@ALF8892 nice choice
I heard a James P. Johnson song today called Jersey Sweet 1. It was awesome
This list is as good as any, but I'm with you. I'd expand the list or drop a modern player or 2 to inclde, Earl Hines, Jelly Roll or Fats Waller. Tough choices, love them all.
@@swingtmix3543 fats def should be there...he was a giant
