I’m a plumber and this is the first time I did a job with geopier engineering, I don’t see anywhere on the plans where it says how close I can encroach with my plumbing ditch….I see it where the piers are holding up footings but not where they just come to the underside of the slab……can I get help with that? There’s about 1,000 of these don’t see how I’m going to miss them
Hi Mack, Thanks for the note. The best thing to do is to reach out to the General Contractor that was working on your project site and coordinate between the GC and the assigned Geopier designer. The allowable capacity of Geopier® ground improvement systems is site specific and varies depending on the soil and structural loading conditions and type of ground improvement system implemented. Allowable capacities of 200 kN (45 kips) to 1,000 kN (225 kips) can typically be achieved. Design bearing pressures for footings typically range from 200 to 400 kPa (4,000 to 8,000 psf) with higher values achievable on some projects. Thanks for the comment, Philadelphia Construction Engineering! You are right that the compressive stresses are resisted by the compacted stone. The bars and bottom plate are simply for engaging uplift loads resulting from transient loading conditions such as wind or seismic loads. Geopier uplift piers have been used for the past 25-years for all types of buildings, and have performed great during many transient loading events, including many Gulf Coast hurricanes, West Coast earthquakes, and everyday wind loads. The bottom plate steel (and all uplift Geopier components, for that matter) are always designed for building code load combinations associated with transient wind and seismic loads. How many floors or tall buildings can be built in this geopier foudatiun or ground improvement method
The maximum height building supported to date is 24 stories with the maximum practical height limited to about 30 stories. The practical building height is highly dependent on local geology, allowable settlement criteria and depths of compressible soil. Geopier systems are most commonly applied for structures of 20 stories or less at this time.
