Vlogging with the Leica SL2-S - does it work?

In this video, we check out if the Leica is good for vlogging. But what makes a good vlogging camera? Autofocus, flip screen and good video quality. The quality is there but what about the Autofocus and can the Leica PhotosApp compensate the missing flip screen?

We all love camera gear, we like buying new cameras and lenses but it's very different if it comes to things like c-stands, batteries and sandbags. Those things are just not exciting, they don't trigger our dopamine and that is exactly why I highly recommend buying them.

The best camera for me: Leica SL2-S
Просмотров 23 тыс.2 года назад
After using it for half a year, I figured out that the Leica SL2-S is the best camera for my needs. I need a camera that is fast and easy to use and I don't know any camera that is easier and more fun to use than this Leica. It is perfect for my photography and video work.
I learned photography with a Konica/40mm, so the 43 would be instinctively preferred for me. But having used the Q2 for a couple of years, the constraints have pushed me to learn and adapt and enjoy. Q3 prices are beyond my budget too. I think a lot of Leica aspiring folks will go toward the D-Lux 8.
Great video!
Beginer start with 50/1.8 then goes to 20, 35 and 85 or 20, 50 and 135
I would suggest start with 35, it's most versatile, which actually can be used as wide and medium. While afterwards goes for 16-20 for ultrawide and 70-85 for tele, this way photographers actually can find, learn and appreciate uniqueness of wide/med/tele.
@@designSenji 35 actually very difficult to us as portrait lens. yes it can but i think 35 portrait are for experiece user
@@NCSTalkidare you talking about portraits as it's only headshots with blurred background?

Nice video! Can you add a ”list” of the products you show?
Thank you. I added the list below the video.
What is the ND filter that you are using in this video? Thank you
It´s the NICI variable ND. It´s good and has almost no color cast. B&W and is good too.
Nice video, I agree with your points. My first light was COB almost the same as yours (different brand name for this part of Europe) but as you mentioned, when you want lit someone against the window in sunny day, it’s impossible to do it and key light is more fill light. Now I’m considering to take VL150 (but it’s almost 4 years after release), in theory it’s 2-3 times more powerful than SL60. But on the other hand there are in the same price range bicolor and RGB cob lights from Amaran and Smallrig but I guess even they are stronger in wattage, light output for daylight colour will be lower.
You are probably right if it comes to output for daylight. If you don´t need rgb, you definitely get more output for the money if you go with a daylight only device.
I agree with the vlogger about a SMALL palm-sized camera, but I do NOT agree that a camera costing $2000 is a good idea for a beginner :)!!! Consider instead the amazing SONY RX100 i, ii, or iii that cost around $500, have zoom lenses, a built in flash, cheap batteries, and a wonderful pop-up view finder, as well as a pop out back screen, and most important-beautiful images. Even better, buy the latest IPHONE or Samsung Galaxy cell and learn to use the high quality cameras in these phones. If you decide not to be a photographer you still have a great cell telephone to share pics with your friends. You can learn to shoot as a photographer with a good cell camera just like on a regular camera, but it's much easier-much more user friendly. The photos will not be as detailed/sharp/rich when blown up a bit, but so what? You are learning and deciding if you want to be a photographer :)! If you buy a cell, review the many you tube videos about how to shoot with the cell camera, or if you use a new iphone, go to the free classes at the Apple Store in your neighborhood. No matter what, never buy as a beginner, a detachable lens camera, you simply won't use it enough to warrant the cost, and they are too darn big to travel with or take to local events. Again, start with cells or palm sized cameras (under $600) then move up from there to APSC or full frame interchangeable lens cameras. Lastly, always consider used cameras sold by private parties who decide NOT to be photographers! You get great depreciation on such sites as Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, Offer-up. Amazon, EBAY are good as well, but you pay tax.
Ok as a seasoned pro Best camera for beginners is camera you have Can buy old Nikon coolpix about $90 (5x) Good pocket camera 6 megapixel Or use cellphone camera
Thank you for the great video! I am starting to get into photography and I am going with the R8. Nice video though, keep up the good work. I like your video editing btw :)
Thank you, the R8 should be a great choice.

You get some good prices at the used market. If you don´t need the fastest autofocus, even the first Sony A7 has good image quality, same with the a6000. Lenses are affordable too on the used market.
@ thanks for the camera recommendation! Appreciate it.
Canon R50 aspc camera for a beginner, very nice camera with a reasonable price, and pair it with a tamron 16-300 : perfect match to try different kind of phtography before investing more in this hobby
Canon 90d is also an excellent choice....
I´m sure it is.
I shoot with a GFX50r and just picked up a D200 for 80$ to try some 'retro' photography. It takes beautiful pictures and you will learn everything you need to know using it. There is no need to agonize over the choices just pick up something cheap and learn to use it.
You can learn photography with every camera out there. Of course. But let´s be honest: you bought the d200 to try some retro and the people that want to start with photography they don´t want to try retro, they often shot with their smartphones before and would be very upset if they compare the images out of a d200 with the ones out of any modern Smartphone.
@@Christian_Kurz I can assure you the D200 pictures look better than any smartphone
@@ironmonkey1512 I can assume D200's CCD sensor is phenomenal. I recently got myself a Canon D30 (not 30D), it's a first digital DSLR camera Canon produced, it only have 3MP's, but let me tell you, with the right glass and software it's a pure wonder. In good light colours and details are gorgeous, noise and resolution is not an issue today, thanks to amazing tools such as Topaz Photo AI and Lightroom. It's a truly a renaissance age for old cameras we live in. Excuse me, do you like the GFX50r?

The future of MFT is difficult, it was often predicted to go down but it is still here. I just can´t suggest it to someone that is new into photography, because it's future is unpredictable.

Hi Christian, nice review, funny. Amazon has the thumb grip for $99, exactly like the Leica, even has Leica Wetzler engraved on it. I also HIGHLY recommend the RRS L-bracket grip, Excellent!
Hi Paul, i have seen that grip for $99 too. I almost ordered it to try it out, but it's definitely fake and still overpriced... and if I´m buying overpriced, I think I´ll buy the original. I´m sure the RRS Grip is a great recommendation but it´s not for me, I don't like grips on the front of the Q or M - System even though they make a lot of sense. I just don´t like how it looks. Appreciate your comment.

Great video. I currently own a Nikon Zf. I would love to have any Leica if I could afford one.
Thank you! I heard only good things about the Zf. It took me many years in business until I could afford them. The used market is also very interesting if it comes to Leica. Very often the cameras are in perfect shape, you save a good amount of money and used Leicas don´t loose any value, most of the time.
@@Christian_Kurz Yes, I have been looking at the used market. The Q3s are very hard to find. There are several Q2s available but I would save only $800 over a new Q3. I will save for a Q3. Thanks for the reply.
I own the Leica Q3 28mm. There is no better or worse, they are the same cameras, the same high-quality workmanship and the same design. You just have to ask yourself whether you want 28mm with a usable 35/50 crop or 43mm with a usable 60/75 crop... Both have different needs and areas of application.
Yes. I have always been a wide angle photographer. I have a 14mm lens for my full frame Nikon d800 that is insanely wide. When my father gave me his Nikon F2 Photomic back in the 70s and asked me what new lens he could buy me for Christmas I asked for a 9mm fisheye. He declined to buy that particularly expensive and somewhat useless lens, but instead bought me a 20mm Nikkor instead, which I loved and still use on my d800 today. I can't get enough information in my photos, so it's the 28 for me. But that is me. And I would find uses for the 43mm Leica as well, would would not use it as much as I use my Q3 with the 28 Summilux which is a stunner of a lens.
I don't mean to be rude, but after looking at some sample photos on dpreview, I can tell that everything coming out of it just looks like what I get from my $300 Panasonic.
Well thats great for you, you saved over $6000.
@@year-ago It’s hard to see on a Video display of an internet broadcast, but I assure you that no camera made by Panasonic ever made the kind of output that either of these Leicas produce. The combination of that 60mp sensor combined with either one of these lenses precludes that. I would be fully confident that these files could be printed 60”x40” and look like a million. That kind of detail just doesn’t read thru the internet.
Agreed! It’s like how all the reviews of Porsche Boxters on RUclips seemed just like how a Miata drives, so I bought the Miata instead.
Useless video.
These comparisons only shows that if Leica releases a Q size camera with interchangeable lenses, that would be a best seller. Auto-focus like the SL, compact like the Q.
Absolutely! But I don´t know if they do it, it would be a huge threat for the M-System.
@@Christian_Kurz Potentially, but I feel the M system has a very specific audience, which would not stop buying M cameras. If you buy a M camera nowadays is because you either want to try a different experience of shooting or want to have that nostalgic feeling from old times. However, most of the younger generation is not really interested in manual focus cameras, but instead in compact cameras that looks good. The Leica Q3 is probably one of the Leica’s best sellers and yet the M system is alive.
@@bsmayerr Interesting thoughts. Let´s hope they will release something like that in the future.
I am keeping my Q3 28, as 35 and 50 have many other alternatives 。
Each to his own as they say. I am the opposite. Lusted after a Q3 but 28 is not really me. Now the 43 is out, I ordered one! Be great to have both, but one is enough of a drain on the bank.
Congrats on your new camera. Enjoy it, you will love it.
I think you're asking the wrong question. Don't ask which camera (28mm or 43mm) is better. Ask which camera YOU LIKE better. I am a landscape and architecture photographer, and spent this summer with just my Q3 28 running all over Italy and Greece falling in love with the Q3 28. If I could find enough money to buy the Q3 43 in addition to the Q3 28, I would buy it. But I know which one I would use the most. The 28.
You are right, these are both fantastic cameras, it all comes down to personal preferences. I love the Q-System for its small size and at the same time its such a powerhouse.
Thank you! This was very helpful---more informative and practical than a lot of other videos I've watched.
Not true. OM-Systems have IP and IPX ratings.
You are right. I actually owned the first OMD EM-5, they have good wether resistance too. Thanks for your comment.
Great Video btw! 👍
Hi Christian would you prefer this 28mm or the new 43mm? Cheers!
That‘s a tough question. I had the opportunity to test the new one. There is already a video in the making.
It totally depends what you wish to shoot. If you want landscapes or architecture the 28mm is ideal, it’s what I have. If you have no interest in these but prefer street, documentary, portrait then 43m
Great Video as always. I bought an Q2 in addition to my SL2 and M10. It is my EDC Camera and my wife can also do photos of me without instructions. For travel, i take the Q2 with the M10 and a small 35 or 50mm lens in my bag. The SL2 is my Wedding (also the Q2) and portrait camera. I love them all. 😊 A Q3 43 would be nice but the 28mm are more perfect for private stuff. A small 50mm (e.g. Sigma 50 f2) with the SL is also a great and cheaper option.
You told me what I wanted to hear.
..today I bought this lens 28-70 and tried it on my Leica SL 2 and Panasonic S5, the lens is dexterous, compact, comfortable with the desired focus and gives an excellent result ! Now it will be convenient to shoot reports, weddings and events with 2 cameras simultaneously. On Panasonic S5, this lens stands like a native one, it’s a pleasure to shoot a quick report with it with a rotating screen, and Leica SL 2 now works for its intended purpose on good manual lenses at full power at 47 megapixels, taking rare necessary pictures during the shooting process, which gives maximum potential for every shoot. I'm happy with my purchase, such a needed lens, thanks for the review! ..😀 👍
What about APS-C crop factor in 4K 60P?
It's there, image quality is still good in my opinion
@@Christian_Kurz Thank you
"Slightly" higher price tag?? It's two and a half times the price I paid for may excellent Canon R6 Mk II - which is a real workhorse, the most versatile camera I ever had in my hands. Not to speak of the lenses. I got my Canon RF 85/2.0 for 340 Swiss Francs (new: 540 Francs): It is stabilized and goes until 1:2. And it produces outstanding images. For the Apo-Summicron-SL 1.2/90mm ASPH I would have to pay 5300 Swiss Francs. For this money I can purchase a whole Canon equipment consisting of the body and three lenses!!! Leica is a myth. It's like a religion. It's good for believers. You just do not need a Leica to become an excellent photographer. And your clients will not see the difference in image quality anyway.
The SL2S is advertised as having a timecode input. I looked at the manual and it makes no mention of timecode input. Do you know if you can jam sync timecode via 3.5mm jack? I am considering a switch from Sony to Leica after falling in love with my Q2 over the past 6 months. Thx!
You can definitely use Timecode with the SL2-S. Should be possible with things like the Tentacle devices.
Good news… the new Leica BP-SCL6 is available and less expensive, in Canada it sell for 235$ CAN (plus 13% sales tax). Just picked up one for my SL2.
The 90mm Summicron APO on an M mount is an unbelievable lens, but VERY challenging to focus. If you want to save your pennies for a Leica M lens, get the Summilux 50mm ASPH - it is utterly magical and the focus is doable. The 28mm 'cron is a wonderful walkabout lens. - Great video, thanks
Thank you for your advice. I like the 28mm, but I'm thinking about buying a q3 instead...
As a S5 owner the 28-70 is highly appealing to me, but so is the 24-70 Art. Both are great! Still can't decide... weight + price vs 4mm + AFL, hmmm.
Hi, thanks for the review. I was thinking replacing my big and heavy Leica 24-70 by this one because I’ve the Lumix 12-35 f4 fog wide angle. However, I’m wondering if the 24-105 would be another good option! But it’s a big and heavy lens too. Another option would be to use my Leica M lenses. I’ve already tried and they’re very good. I like shooting in manual mode but for holidays with family, it can be tedious.
These are all great options, the only thing I won't recommend, is replacing your 24-70 with the 24-105.
@@Christian_Kurz Hi, thanks for your reply. I know but it’s big and heavy but very good and for travelling it’s not the best compromise.
It's not a camera: it's a box.......
SL2S is a great creation from Leica and to be honest its more usable to M models. The only problem is 1. the SL lenses are heavy 2. SL lenses are limited and slow in production 3. SL lenses are outsourced to Japan to make 4. AF is a joke for the price 5. SL optics is not unique compared to lenses from Canon/ Sony/ Nikon. For a camera at that price - one can always get something better with Canon Nikon Sony.
Ive been using two of these for my work for over a year now. Ive been a photographer for 20 years and have used Canon, Nikon and Sony. This camera is by far the best that I have used for a few reasons. Sony is too much like a computer and my level of creativity declined using that camera. This is a step back and makes you slow down and appreciate what you are taking as you dont have the machine gun ability of the Sony. The sensor is also incredible, shooting at 12500 ISO in low light is a dream. I cant recommend this camera enough. both of mine are battered but still perform like a Mercedes
sigm HAVE made sime LwixamZiess lenses. Lwica uses japanese shutters, aensors, electronic circuit components. ok with me, they9re ;rcedes use some japanese ball-bearings..=pay the premium for Leica care in assembly, design of ergonomics, camera functionality, and quality control - the best. the camera you get will be as perfect as humanly possible,.unlikely to fail, ever.
