MERGESORTRACING (VIMRC WRX)

I'm an amateur track driver in the SF Bay Area who tracks a 2018 Base WRX with a bunch of mods (build sheet linked below). My interest in driving fast started when I went driving around the mountains of the peninsula (Skyline Blvd, anyone?) in a dinky Hyundai Accent hatch, and since then I've taken BMW performance classes and have gone to several track days in the last couple years. I currently track the WRX, but I have recently purchased an NA Miata that I plan on racing starting in 2021.

First time at Laguna in over two years, and first time in a car that has power and passes sound! I have a love-hate relationship with this track, and I finally got to give it a chance with a properly set-up car.

Test day is basically another open passing HPDE day, so I got lucky in a traffic break on the track and got a clean lap! Sonoma is an incredibly fun track when you have some power 😂 mergesortracing

It was pretty hot the whole day, but somehow my stretched out RS4's handled the track like a champ and landed me a second down on my last PB! I am pretty happy with this lap, even though I made a couple mistakes in and I'm still braking into turn 8, but I otherwise think that with stickier tires and cooler weather, I'll be well into the sub 2 range. Pretty great day hosted by SpeedSF! instagram...

Tested out for a session the E36 M3 that our Lucky Dog team will be racing with in a few weeks at Sonoma! Super enjoyable car, and definitely taking notes on the mods to bring to my E46. Great day hosted by OnGrid. mergesortracing

I beat this PB! ruclips.net/video/yHsclZJCB8I/видео.html First time back at Thunderhill East in nearly six months, and first time in a car with power. Definitely still learning how to drive a faster car on a fast track. This thing's definitely got more in it, but the car's cooling needs to be addressed before I try to push anywhere close to 10/10ths. Awesome day hosted by OnGrid, as always! ins...

New platform. New car. New powerband. Same track where things went south last time. The B6ZE in the NA6 is no more. It lived a noble life of 31 years, starting off as a well-maintained commuter, and ending up as a track weapon that broke low HP Miata records throughout California. May it rest in peace. Some day the NA6 will house a BP4W and double its horsepower from its past form, but that day...

You didn't misread the title. The car that started it all for me is really back on the track. Finally, after three years of it sitting dormant on a driveway and in a garage, it gets to stretch its legs. I was hoping for a faster lap time, but I also forgot how AWD works and how to guide the weight of this car, as well as some exhaust leak at the header that lost a few PSI at the beginning of th...

CORRECTION: Tire size is 225/45/15. It only took a couple days to beat my last PB 😂 I dropped five seconds during an actual wheel-to-wheel race and caught up to so much traffic in the end. Hopefully I can find another double bypass 5 mile track day soon to take my own Miata out on stickier tires and see what lap time I can land. I wasn't wearing my GoPro because I was running a two hour stint. ...

I've beaten this PB! ruclips.net/video/4s-wMBsWZzk/видео.html I've never driven double bypass Thunderhill 5 Mile, so I had no reference for myself. This was done on a test day right before our Lucky Dog race, and I think this is pretty good for never doing both bypasses! I used older RS4 tires, and they're still pretty good to put down a quick lap. mergesortracing

EXACTLY. ONE. YEAR. LATER. I finally achieved what was previously unthinkable for a 1.6 Miata at Thunderhill West... a sub 1:28 laptime!! And I did it TWICE IN A ROW! I am so stoked to see how this car will perform with sticker RE's and without traffic or debris on the track. Now this for sure is a chassis & engine record. Ignore the other laptimes. The traffic was absolutely nuts that day and ...

I wasn't expecting a PB with RS4's, but I somehow managed to get one. Solid low 2:09 lap time, with a 2:08 in sights if I clean up turn 1 a bit. Maybe even a 2:07 if I recreate this on RE-71RS? Either way, I'm super happy with this result, and today's track day was a blast. Great event by OnGrid, as always. mergesortracing

Nice driving!
Good times!
3:14:40😂
Great racing with you guys! we are #444
what oil do you run?
I don’t ever think I’ve once heard anyone honk their honk on a track. 😂
Nice! Just a hair faster than a base model Tesla ruclips.net/video/9yO4oENTVCE/видео.htmlsi=RwGR_hgj5VTgKF69
I was there last week. Thank you for sharing insight of your lines. One day. I'll break into the 1.2X range lol.
RIP Miata 😢
If you wore long pants it would have been sub 1:24 for sure
Each inch cut from the shorts is a second off the lap time. I don’t make the rules.
Damn, that's some nice front-end grip. What tires were you on?
I was on RE71RS. Surprisingly it still kept me in the S4 class, so figured why not maximize that by the rules 😉
Nice! I really need to get my T6 turn-in speed up
Sad to see the 'Yata temporarily sidelined but hope to see it back better than ever eventually! Nice lap, e46 looks like a blast, you planning to do Shootout this year again with that car?
Yep, already signed up for Buttonwillow in May! It's now called OnGrid Time Attack :)
@@mergesortracing I'll see you out there!
Dude... nice work. I'm impressed the re71s hold on for that many laps. Great lap time. Very impressive
I really like the V730s. Mine just started to chord, assuming they're probably good for 3-4 more track days
The tie rod has developed Peyronie disease.
Such beautiful smooth driving. Nice work, sir.
Great editing ahaha thank you! Well dealt with a tedious mishap
Is that an NA Miata? God it sounds good... I miss mine.
I want a 4th pedal cam. 4 video feeds at the same time split in perfect quadrants.
Everybody messes up, it's part of life, but rejoinin that track when you saw another car cornering was pretty dumb
and here's the mayor of clowntown
Why does that part of the track look different? Its been forever since I went there.
Wait, who's the clown, you or the other guy?
Better to bend a tie rod than to bend a cradle or frame.
Better to know how to drive and stay on the track.
@@Formaldehydex That's why tracks have runoff areas, part of going on track is going off track. It's a safer learning environment. I'd rather see someone go off track and bend a tie rod then go off road and bend their whole car around a pole and die. Even F1 drivers go off track, I'm pretty sure they know how to drive.
@@huzudra Going off track during a track day is so discouraged that you usually only get one warning at most. If it happens again, even sometimes in different events, you are told to pack up and go home. But knowing this would mean you actually know the facts, instead of spewing uneducated drivel,
@@Formaldehydex As I said, making mistakes is part of learning. If you never make mistakes you're not learning. Clearly you must be a bot. Going off track for the purpose of overtaking is what's frowned upon. Taking a corner too hard or misjudging a hill with a corner on the other side or in some way unsettling your suspension at the wrong point and going off track in an accidental manner during a session happens to everyone at one time or another. It happens in amateur and it happens in professional racing. If everyone who ever went off track got banned from each track they went off at then there'd be no one on any track ever anywhere because they'd all be banned.
@@huzudra This is a track day, not a race. There is no required safety equipment other than a helmet. The fact that he bent the tie rod so badly meant that he could have even rolled because he was going so quickly and the wheel struck something substantial. It appears to be a badly deteriorated side road that is no longer used, or possibly a concrete pad. You are totally clueless and have no idea whatsoever how track days are run and what is completely discouraged. He also could have easily taken out the car behind him that he was likely trying to make sure he didn’t need to allow to pass, which is also against the safety rules. Did you even pay attention to the audio? “This is watch mojo and today we are counting down our picks for the 10 most stupid people”.
Well done! Glad to see you still going at it and breaking your PRs
How do you do that first corner
press hard on brake coming in hugging far wall, as you approach apex, ease of brakes and full thottle our of corner but adjust as needed so you backend doesn't slip to much so that the kart doesnt need to fire up again. That works for me but I still slip a little too much sometimes. Probably better ways to do it
I go flat out on that turn, go near the wall but not to close. Brake a little if necessary
WOOF!!
That’s wild! I went to East a couple weeks ago in my NB2 and only managed a slow 2:20.5 with old 205 RT660s, alright brakes, and cheapish coilovers. I feel like my car has at 2:15 in it with more seat time and driver mod though. What’s your suspension, brakes, and tire setup?
I have Ohlins Road & Track coilovers with 7k and 10k springs, along with SPL tie rods. Gives me a good amount of camber adjustment. For brakes, on the fronts I have the Wilwood BBK with DTC-30 pads all four corners. For wheels/tires, I run 15x9 Konig Dekagrams with 205/50/15 RE-71RS tires for this lap. I now normally just run 225 RS4's to reduce my costs.
3:34 homey aggressively honks at Corvette lol 😂
Great driving. Was interesting to see the speed you’re able to carry into and through some of the corners. Good stuff. I’m going to try some of your lines. Great video.
Clearly, I should not be editing videos after a whole race weekend. The correct tire size is 225/45/15, not 255.
How did you feel the dynamics of these cars compared to your Miata? (other than the power of course) did the 911 and cayman have pretty different handling?
The flagger was ready with that yellow.
That guy Frank smh, I tell you what.
Yellow c7 guy can't swallow pointing by a 1.6 miata 😂
Love the Miata content!! I have a '90 1.6 that is my dedicated track car/turning into race car. Awesome stuff!
Just gonna snatch that
good run
Awesome video! Excited to see spec miata content in the future.
So much winning
The title and premise of this video is complete cringe. You're not racing.
is only game why you hef to be mad
Congrats brother! glad to see you back out there. Your videos are getting better and better
the worst section for someone to pass you at full speed.
I've been going to Willow (Streets and Big track) for 20 years. I've never heard that called the chicane of death. That chicane used to be much tighter but they straightened it for the motorcycles.
It was a lot more fun when it was tighter.
That will happen when you lift on that corner. But dang that was a late dive by the other car
I love that track. I've been there with Keith Code 5 or 6 times but always wanted to go back in a car. It's really hard to find track days there for some reason.
No way this 1.6 is stock lolz. Driver mod is over 1000 😊
