I'm sure you could. You would have to make sure not to overheat it and watch it closely, checking the temperature frequently. The crockpot yogurt is for those of us who don't have time to do that. (But also, my crockpots use less electricity than my stove does.)

@@ortegonadam Nope! We've now had several loads dropped and the road is fine. They laid six inches of dirt down first. Also, sure, rocks are free in the wild, but do you have the equipment to pick them up and bring them home? These rocks are bigger than my five year old and the men who installed them can't move them at all by hand.

It thickens a little, but I've found the only way to get it super thick is to strain it with a cheese cloth. That removes the excess whey and gives very thick yogurt. We like it both ways, so I don't do that very often.

@@juniperway, thank you for responding. Since many of the good bacteria are in the whey, I'd like to keep as much of it as possible. Someone shared the idea of adding powdered milk in order to thicken the raw milk. I may try that, too.

@@Jesusgirl-1 just don't toss out the whey if you separate it out. I use whey all the time in other things. (Pancakes, etc.) Liquidy yogurt is more traditional - it's just not what we're used to. I'm fine with it now, though I didn't love it at first.

I messed up the last time because I was working on so many things at once so…I heated the raw milk for around 3 hours and then turned it off, well my timer didn’t go off and I left it overnight without putting the yogurt culture in…So I put it in the next morning and then let it sit another 24 hours. Do you think it’s ok? I know raw milk that isn’t heated can stay out 48 hours but idk about it being heated? It taste like sour cream lol

I would absolutely love to be able to afford a miter saw. They're INCREDIBLY expensive, though, and I can't justify spending money on a tool that I'll only use once a year when we're struggling to get by as it is. My projects so far only happen when I'm able to scrounge up enough money for materials. I have tons of ideas for more projects, but they'll have to wait. (And the saw will have to wait even longer. I've tried getting them through our local Buy Nothing group, and have almost been able to do it twice, but the giver changed their minds both times. Sigh.) My circular saw cost only $25, and I felt guilty spending even that much. 😂 Miter saws have all been around $250. Used ones have been $200. Renting them in our area is $75/day, and I wouldn't be able to move it on my own, anyway. I only "tout" my circular saw because I feel like I've more than gotten back the money from it, and I'm proud of what I've been able to do with just it. My husband is left handed as well, and he used it tons of times before I ever picked it up for the first time.

No, it doesn't get nearly hot enough to pasteurize it. Also, heating the milk is literally the only way to get yogurt. Yogurt cultures don't grow/work in cold milk. Bacteria needs warmth to multiply.

I'm so glad this was helpful to you! I'm starting to brainstorm my next project and can't wait to dig in. The cost was probably around $1200-1500. The IKEA stuff was around $450. I know IKEA has raised their prices significantly since I built this. (The Billy bookcases were $39 when I did this, and only a few months later, they rose in price to $89. I haven't checked in a while to see if that's still accurate or not.)

It would have had to have been one heck of a big miter block. :-) (I'm familiar with miter boxes, and I know they need to be big enough for the thing getting cut to sit in. Not sure if miter boxes are the same or not.) Luckily, the joint is still very difficult to see, even now, over a year later. Honestly, though, I'd never used a hand saw before and thought it would be too hard for my shoulder. I didn't know that fresh, brand-new ones cut pretty easily. I've since had surgery on that shoulder - we found I had a bone cutting my rotator cuff, so there's a chance that even a very sharp saw would have been problematic. My goal is to get a miter saw eventually. I want one soooo bad. :-)
