Why Does Hal 9000 Malfunction?

2001 Space Odyssey, the film that changed science fiction forever. Touted as one of the best movies of all time by directors like Christopher Nolan and Denis Vilenauve space odyssey is long, haunting, and not an easy film to watch for the average filmgoer. Kubrick takes us through three major sections spanning in time, from the dawn of man to our first visit to Jupiter. The film is lonely, cold...

The Shining and the Hidden Evil of the Overlook hotel
Просмотров 282 тыс.4 года назад
The Shining is one of the most iconic horror films of all time. The movie has inspired many analysis videos and theories, but in this video essay I explore a less discussed topic What exactly is the nature of the evil force in the overlook hotel? What does it say about Kubricks ultimate message with the story? And What does it say about the greater aspect of evil as a whole? 0:00-1:30 Intro 1:3...
Your Kubrick accent is good!
Really enjoyable. Thanks for this!
It's funny to see all these analyses on RUclips - this video is pretty good itself, but one must read the book to really get the point. (The Shining is an absolute masterpiece, on par with all the other recognized literary classics. Ironically, King set the bar way too high for himself; he should have written this book last.)
Jack in the mudra of Baphomet at the end is telling, and the closest to representing the unseen beast
Yes, BUT they are still reincarnating life time after life time... and in reincarnating, there is NO time... just like now, we only think that- Technically Earth is a prison- Physical reality is a PRISON - that's why they kept coming back, but continue to make the same mistake life time after life time
Jack Nicholson is a below average actor, but a great character.
So the scenes with him looking at the scrapbook were edited out?
I like how you're approaching this. Great job. There's a lot of analasys that go on crazy, many times semantic, tangents. You're not. And I didn't catch the contract part, or the bathroom-as-men-only space, on my own-- really great. And the analysis of Red. Bam. You really get to the essence. I'm really impressed. Subscribing.
Goodness me, this review is what happens when the only education you’ve had a poor one, full of political activism and left the narrator entirely unable to interpret anything through anything but a politically partisan lens. It really is sad what our educators are doing.
You had me until you said, "Misogyny" & "The Patriarchy" being at the forefront of this scene. In the 1970's 😂!!? I understand you're talking about the metaphorical display of violence but those two elements are not what Stanley Cubric wanted to convey in that 'scene', trust me. lol. Talk about placing ideologues where they were never meant to be, lmao! You do realize that these terms are more associated with modern times right? 1st & 2nd wave feminism wasn't a talking point that male authors attempted to champion so readily in those times (please believe me) and it certainly wasn't a deconstructed element in this 'scene' of this film. So please get that out of your head. Substance abuse & child abuse was however & the author/director said as much in an interview way before your time (my time). The other components are great & they're textbook (I agree with). But don't comment on that time period using modern sensibilities. It makes it difficult to take you seriously. If you attempt to inject modern ideologues into past mediums, they don't fit. Whether you like to admit it or not, some things are just a product of their time. I know that it makes it less interesting and mundane but it really is just that simple. I'm sorry. I hope my comment doesn't make you upset. This video really is awesome.
who the heck is he talking too? pass...
Very well done. It’s difficult to find new things to expand upon in a movie that has already been so thoroughly analyzed. Good work!👍
How 9,000 malfunctioned because it didn't have enough Nvidia chipsets.
Bartholomew Jojo Simpson, Charles Delbert Grady... I fail to see the problem.
Good but annoying little character
From when Darth bane won
First fan fic that isn’t a random forest with cheap lightsaber fights
HAL. Did not fail it was programmed to not allow anything or anybody to damage its prime tasks of getting to Jupiter when it has a fault it sees they want to shut HAL down.
Has anybody ever referenced the subtle inclusion of a "death island", Böcklin's ISLE OF THE DEAD (also inspiring Rachmaninov's tone poem of 1909) just seconds after the opening? With Christiane Kubrick's background in art, I deem that also a useful piece of the beautiful puzzle that is THE SHINING. The " evil incarnate" of the movie grabs the reigns like some Midwestern Nazgul and runs with it. It only "leaves" with the ghastly Pendereckian gamelan stroke and Jack's frozen face.
The other important thing that Dick Halloran said is that only people who shine can see them - he also said it is hereditary him n his grandma had full conversations w/out talking out loud. So Jack had shining which is why he can see Lloyd n all the ghosts but when Wendy comes in she doesn't see anyone w/him in the party room- just like in Dr Sleep when lol Danny is taking to Dick halloran on a bench she can't see him- but Jack does shine n drank to dull it just like Danny did when he got older then quit.
Theres still a huge discrepancy between the two movies, at the end of 2001 the video shows Haywood Floyd saying that he knew that the HAL 9000 was aware of the entire mission and then in 2010 he says to Chandra that he didn't know that anyone told Hal and that he specifically did not order anyone to tell Hal about the mission.
Dave did not enter the ship using the Eva's thrusters he used explosive decompression from the capsule of the Eva to propel himself into the airlock.
"Delbert" Grady was my English teacher in high school.
I know it's well thought of, but personally never rated it as a film. Trying to hard to be earnest, and some ridiculous plot points.
Does it tell you somewhere that the story was set in 1980? NO IT DOESN'T.
I really enjoyed this video. I disagree with you about 1408. It was excellent.
Jack tells Grady, "You chopped your wife and daughter up into little bits." (3:46) He says DAUGHTER, singular. He does not say "daughters". It's unambiguous (compare with "newspapers" at 3:40). Wouldn't Kubrick have reshot it if a mistake? Or was it a mistake that he tolerated because the scene was a continuous take and really good otherwise?
This is a very anti-white, far-left and racist interpretation of “the Shining”. Most of it a major stretch.
I only know Grady was a Rat catcher before the film
Bowlly's song "Midnight and the Stars and You" was released in 1934. It could not have been playing on.July 4 1921.
The song playing for the vintage picture is sung by AL Bowlly. He was killed in London by a German Air strike in WW2.
Sorry, I found this unlistenable but the movie, 2010 addressed the question about HAL.
@14:28 notice how Jack looks taller than Grady @15:41 right after the camera flip, they look the same size @ 20:31 after the camera flips back & forth again, when Grady seems to take on a new demeanor, he appears taller and Jack seems to get smaller. At the close up when he does that nervous chuckle, he's looking up at Grady.
I love that i was named after Mr. Grady, most people are named after family im named after a fictional ghost murderer
They never mentioned the fact that Delbert Grady has an English accent
“aS sOoN aS pOsSiBLe???”
The overlook was built on native spiritual ground. Wouldn’t that have played a part since they said the tribal people were fighting while it was being built.
this is fucking obvious
An intelligent and humanistic analysis that fits well with other Kubrick films. Well done. Perhaps Kubrick explored the same theme in a variety of ways and in different settings.
A whole lot of nothing. So, he reincarnates but changes his name? Cmon, just tell people about the Wendy theory, the only theory that comes close to making sense.
19:48 wondering why jack stated grady chopped his wife and daughter up when it was 2 sisters ? daughters
Regarding the subject: The Discrepancy of the Two "Twin" Sisters I saw an interview that they used these two girls because they looked so similar (and in real life were in fact twins) but they weren't exactly identical, similar but they weren't the same in height. Therefore could cast them as the daughters. The script and dialog states that Charles had two daughters approximately 8 and 10 years old. That he kills. It is never said/spoken at anytime that the daughters were twins. Let me shed some light on this topic. As a girl growing up, (born 1970), I remembered distinctly that many sisters who were close in age and had similar features, would get mistaken as twins, would start twinning (on their own accord). Or parents of two daughters close in age who looked similar would dress their daughter as twins. This was very common, more so than today, to see this happening, whether by the parents or by sisters on their own accord. Back through the 70s and 80s twinning was very common. Not all sisters could pull this off. My sister was 3 years younger than me and we looked nothing a like. But an age gap of only 2 years makes all the difference. I distinctly remember, any sisters who could pull this off did. And it wasn't just in my school or neighborhood. Seeing "twin girls" back then was disproportionate to the actual numbers of twins that are represented in a population. By the mid90s this was seen as lame. And the practice died out. Anyway, it did represent a power play and very strong bond between two sisters even if they truly weren't twins. People in general have a fascination with twins. If you look closely at the two sisters who play "the twins sisters" they look like sisters who have a very strong bond. They were similar ages to those mentioned in the dialog. No mention was ever stated that they were twins, only sisters aged 8 and 10. As I said, twinning was very commonly seen when this movie was made. Kubrick knew this and knew he could show the sisters as twinning to show how close they were as sisters. Same with them holding hands. Audiences from that era, wouldn't have said they were twins, only close sisters, too close to the point of creepy, but albeit sisters. As indicated by the fact that they are twinning. Also, back then, to casually refer to the sisters as twins, just simply meant they wore their hair the same and dresses the same but it wouldn't include that they were inherently twins. Over time, people who were too young to remember this was a fashion/behavior from that time frame, would Assume they Were Twins. It isn't a continuity error, they are two daughters as stated eralier, 8 and 10 who were unsettling close, their twinning, that Kubrick used, was to play up the creepy factor. I am from that generation and saw the movie shortly after it came out. And I have a sister. I knew these are the two dead daughters, ages 8 and 10, but I didn't think, "why do they look like twins?", I knew why. It's how some sisters who were very close, dressed and behaved to show or prove how close they were. It is similar to the big brother thing..except with girls. It meant they had each other's back. It was a signal of their solidarity to each other. In the credits each girl is listed only as Grady's daughters. No mention of twin sisters. Hope this explains why people, today find this as a discrepancy or continuity error. It isn't. Dilbert Grady in the scrape book killed his 2 twin 12 year old daughters. This works for your theory even for those who haven't seen the scrapebook.
Both, Charles and Delbert were members of the Grady Bunch.
I can’t overemphasise how much this film shares similarities with Twin Peaks and the twilight zone. It’s like the characters from the film have spirits that continue to manifest into new forms and might be caught in some kind of limbo/hell. The Native American symbolism implies something metaphysical or supernatural is at plays
Oh god really? Perhaps some real research would help. 🙄
Unfortunately doctor sleep debunks the 2 Grady theory. As when older Danny sees his dad behind the bar he too forgets who he is. Delbert is Charles. The twins don’t have to be the same age believe it or not. And also Kubrick wasn’t as precise as you think. Many are over analyzing everything
In my opinion, this is much ado about nothing. The Charles and Delbert Grady name snafu was just an editing oversight plain and simple. People are reading way too much into this. Did anyone ever consult with the actual film editor of the movie?
You can’t answer these questions without answering the primal question first. Who’s the caretaker? Kubrick is all subtext, so if you mainly listen to what the characters say without paying attention to what they do, you’ll be misled. The Grady from the ballroom is not a caretaker, he’s a waiter. Jack, is not the caretaker either, he writes and plays ball (all work and no play…). Have we watched anyone performing any caretaking activities in these movie? Yes, indeed. If you wanna know whose story we are actually watching, I suggest you watch Robert Altman “Images”, from which Kubrick took many ideas for The Shining. This movie is an onion. If you pay close attention to every detail, you’ll find like 5 different movies inside and each with an important message.
Unfortunately, that instinct is probably necessary to become a star faring species…
Can you imagine the Trip Advisor reviews of the Overlook: "Had a great stay. Hell, I feel I've ALWAYS been here! Some hotel butler named Grady assured me I am CORRECT."
