The problem with using materials to make objects appear and disappear is that first an object can have many materials assigned to it, and second you might want to do this with many objects in a scene. It's just not practical to keyframe every material for every fade in. What I found easiest is RMB on the object, go to properties and keyframe the visibility spinner. You can set it to a value between 1 and 100....in 3DSMax....4. Now since this basic capability is beyond the imagination of anyone at the Blender Foundation, the next best thing to do is use render layers, Z-depth pass and collections. Place the fade-in/fade-out objects in a collection and include that collection in a seperate render layer that only renders those objects. Then exclude them in the render layer for the default scene. In both render layers, set the it to create Z-depth passes This will render the fade-in objects as seperate image sequences. You can then fade them in and out in the compositor.
Hi @siarnne, agree this is not a practical approach for more complex objects with multiple materials, but was simple enough for my needs here. I think the method you've described sounds interesting and i'll give it a go! Also agree that it's surprising Blender doesn't have a more native feature to achieve this! Thanks
