GENE HENSLEE: Tribute To Bob Wills ~ Boy From Turkey, Texas.
I first "met" Tom T Hall's storytelling days way back in 1970 when I joined an American oil rig working in the UK North Sea. We had very little "entertainment" in those days; maybe a movie once a week and then we all relied on each others books, audio-cassettes, etc to keep us amused and from going crazy. Someone loaned me a tape titled "Soldier of Fortune" by Tom T Hall - Oh boy!!! I discovered something that I had never, ever heard of before! Listening to all those different songs on that tape! Every single one with a great message, but also with a great different wrap-up and ending to each song. A new horizon opened up to me: Country Music - which before then, I had always not quite looked down upon, but never listened to it either, "Soldier of Fortune" really and truly changed my life!
Have always loved him .. favorite song :)
Sweet Jesus what a song,..
Tom T, We’ll miss you dearly, and always. The world just won’t seem right without you in it, but it’s a better world for all of your rhymes, your stories that paid such close attention to people and their stories, and all the guitar strings you bent. You got the brass ring
Exquisitely well written song, Gary.
this song only went to #51 on the country charts in 1980!!!
Greatest man I never knew
Everyday is new Tom, and I enjoy it with you
I met Rick Money, his guitar player, in a Columbus, GA trailer park when I was stationed at Fort Benning, GA.

@ab201060 It's only Bobby Osborne with the background vocal...
Dolf de Boer , I loved this song for years before I figured out it was the Osborne Brothers doing background vocals! After that I loved it even more.
THE LONE RANGER,CISCO KID,JOHN WAYNE,ALL THE HEROES ARE HERE,ALL FROM A GREAT STORYTELLER

its from his "soldier of fortune"LP,great, like all the rest.
This is terrific!!! Tom T. and Shel - two amazing talents. Thanks for the upload.
Wow...this was a great retro 80s country song that brings back many memories! Shelly was so awesome. Looking back, the 80s had some real good country songs. Miss those days.
I am a Kentuckian with strong ties to Tennessee. My grandfather was from Knoxville and I went there for many summers. I became a huge Tennessee Vols Football fan and love to hear Rocky Top rock the whole town.
Shelly West is definitely one of the most underrated country singers from the early 80's. Both with David Frizell and her solo recordings, she always hit the ball over the fence with her great vocals. This song was one of her best!
This is really good!
Shel Silverstein was brilliant, very creative. He wrote a lot of great songs for Bobby Bare, Dr. Hook and others. I didn't know about this one until I happened across it here. TTH does a great job on it. Thanks for posting it.
@hoopmatch Ray Price recentley recorded this for a Shel Silverstein tribute album. Both are great and done in their own styles.
I thought I was familiar with TTH's work, but this is a new one for me. Thanks for posting.
Shelly's cover hit #4 in Billboard, 9-17-83. Who had the original version, since it was written by an English songwriter, Ronnie Scott? Somebody let me know. God bless!
does anyone have a live version of this?
Dave "The Gonz" on lead guitar & Voice Don Baskin on Rhythm Guitar & Voice David Hayden on Bass & Voice Carl Scott on Drums
My hero too.
Excellent. I used to crawl out with Audie also.
Great song, and video, I love the mention of Audie murphy, the late, great, war hero, and favourite Cowboy actor of mine. Such a well written song by Shel Silverstein. could have been one Tom wrote himself. I have it by "The Old Dogs" Mel, Bobby, Jerry, and Waylon. first time hearing it by Tom T.
Great tune by Tom.
Great song, first time ever hearing this by Tom, I have it by the "Old Dogs", (Bobby Bare, Mel Tillis, Jerry Reed and Waylon Jennings) sure sounds like something Tom would have written himself.
@dandebonaire and me? Chattanooga
