How To Fry Scream with CRYPTA VOCALIST | The Story Behind The Scream (Episode 11)
In this episode of The Story Behind the Scream, we had the honor of interviewing Fernanda Lira, frontwoman of the Brazilian Death Metal band CRYPTA.
Fernanda shares how she got into metal, the struggles she faced while learning extreme vocals, and how she refined her technique over the years. She also talks about growing up in Brazil, discovering fry screams, working towards deeper growls, and the impact of having a vocal coach.
We also discuss her biggest inspirations, like Tatiana Shmayluk from Jinjer, and her interest in exploring false chord screams and pig squeals. And of course, she gives us an impressive demonstration of her vocal range and some must-know exercises to help you start ...

False chords seem easier for me
She’s got that Chuck Schuldiner fry scream not Bobby blitz haha
Definitely the best interview ever!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘❤
False chord is easy for me, while i can't do fry scream.
Nice
Wow! Fernanda is so down to Earth.
She really is! It was so much fun talking to her and so insightful. :)
Crypta, Kittie, Arch Enemy, And Spiritbox needs to tour together.
Haha that would be such an incredible tour! 🤯🤘
But at the same time they are tired of being considered "female fronted metal bands" so ...
I had the pleasure of meeting Fernanda after a show, she is so lovely and down to earth. It's very interesting to know about her vocal journey
She really is and it's amazing how passionate she is about screaming! 🤘
Damn this was good, and Fernanda really nailed it 💪🔥
She really did and also helped us a lot to start with Fry Screaming :) 🤘
The random kid in the middle of class:
True 😂
Amei a dica do miau. Fernanda muito amorzinho explicando !
That was a really great tip and it was so much fun to scream with her!
Fernanda seems to be such a lovely person!
We had the same impression, it was so much fun talking to her and very insightful :)
😂
579 days of screaming practice in 20 seconds! Let me know in the comments what you think of the progress! 👇 Are you learning to scream too? Share your day count! 🤘

Awesome. What an honour. She‘s an amazing vocalist.
She truly is, and it was fascinating to gain these practical insights into Fry Screaming. We're glad you enjoyed the interview! 🤘
I was in a similar situation before with my vocals, here's my take: (Oh boy is this an essay, I promise it's somewhat worth the read XD) You're going to need a sharper texture to produce an overtone like u want, which, inherently, fryish means of distortion is going to work better. Essentially all inhale sounds (that have any kinda volume to it) can be achieved and sounding better with a proper fry distortion, so I'd really recommend giving that a shot. You can still get a decent way with a more fc distortion, the way I got to it was trial and error aiming for compression/compressed gutturals. It's easy to just go "ouuugh" and call it a guttural but it's not anywhere near as hard hitting as at least I prefer it, so I essentially tried to push things together partially (not very successfully in the beginning but ya get there eventually) in different ways and see if I could find ANY sorta more sharper texture that I could get a hold of. Fast forward a few months, I can get a lot sharper gutturals but also just have more punch in my scream even though it's fc, sometimes it sounds pretty identical to mark zelli's lows n guts! (Check out the please end me onetake and u'll hear his overtone *thing* (gutturals can also have overtones so it's really no clear boundaries between gutturals and squeals in some cases)) Anywhom, with that sorta texture you can shape it into a squeal as well, I prefer the y approach, kinda saying week but puffing up my tongue and closing up my lips some (u can also put tongue up against the lump behind upper teeth for a slightly higher squeal range) The terms are fluid but I'd say you'll find a fry squeal to be sharp and static or slightly gurgly, a fc squeal will be either softer and with a slightly weaker overtone, or having a more "dirty" sound behind it, dirty factor can be rad for gutturals but in squeals it's a gamble imo. As a last sidenote, as another person mentioned, throat singing is a goated exercise for all this, builds great control and overall gets your fcs used to really moving. Hope any of this helps, always remember with trial and error that u should never settle on something you don't feel like you can sustain, to me it doesn't matter what ppl you listen to as long as the one ur really listening to is ur throat XD, some discomfort can resolve itself but NOT by pushing harder but just trial and error over time, you might end up making small adjustments as time goes and end up finding it feeling fine. Scream with caution :)
We hope you like the video and we'd love to hear your Fry Scream tips in the comments!🔥
Now me trying to do the groundhog scream.
Hahaha We would love to see you screaming like this 😄maybe not the most healthy scream 😆
I had my best luck starting with kargyrra and saying the word "maori" very slowly, with special focus on the "ri" part. You should hear some of those overtones in it when you hit it right! It seems to be kind of in the changing from "r" to "eeeee." Then for me it was just keeping that tongue position and adding the scream in! I hope that's helpful!
Mehr Twang könnte helfen ✌🏼
I’ve never managed to complete them by exhaling but I have always achieved the high pitch squeal by inhaling. Squeezing the throat to close slightly by tensing the lower jaw and pulling it forwards slightly. Complete it the same as you would any other inhale but close the mouth slightly when making the “Reeeee” sound. At first you may choke and cough when you inhale too much air. To fix that, you can press your tongue to the roof of your mouth to act as a slight filter to limit the amount of air inhaled in one go 🙌🏻
With inhales I can create the basic sound, but yeah, I start coughing immediately. I will play around with that more but I’d love to be able to do it with exhales. It’s interesting how a mouth shape that creates a certain sound when inhaling won’t work the same way at all when exhaling :)
@@ScreamDudes_official It is crazy how the slightest changes can make a difference to the sound :) But yes, please try the technique with tongue placement to prevent too much air intake on inhales 🤘🏻
@@stevecowalski7801Will do! 🫡🫡🫡
@ direkt beim false ansetzen. Ich verenge im Hals selber schon alles. Guck dir mal mein benighted - nails Cover an. Da mache ich die. Und wichtig den Druck vom Zwerchfell holen.
@@ThatBrutalVocalGuyWird gemacht!

Absolut! 🤘
Gojira is really hard to cover since the singer has his own technique. I remember one interview where he said that when he goes on tour, there will be full days where he doesn't speak and only writes what he needs on paper in order to keep his voice for the next gig
Ah extremely interesting, never heard of that. The technique is also very hard to imitate. It sounds like a mix of false chord and fry screams...
Thank you for joining us again! If you don't want to miss any future videos, make sure to like and subscribe, we really appreciate it! 😊🤘
This is my favourite video of you guys so far! Your voices are getting seriously good and I love the „narrator style“, especially with some jokes / memes here and there. Very entertaining!
Aww thank you so much! Your feedback means really a lot to us!! Thank you! 🙏🤘
0:56 did I just watch Manni Ludolf speaking in English 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Haha let's say "little bittle" 😄
