How to Install and Test Crankshaft Position Sensors | Project 944
This week I finished replacing and testing the crankshaft position sensors on the Porsche 944 in an attempt to fix the strange movement in my tachometer. It did not solve that problem but it did result in a pleasant surprise. I hope this video helps someone else with their installation or helps you figure out how to test for the correct installation position.
Short Guide:
Position D: Closer to the cabin, Pins 27 & 8
Position B: Farther from the cabin, Pins 26 & 25
Resistance Range: 600 - 1600 Ohms

Yoo she runs! Best of luck man you definitely earned my subscription
I have the same colour 944....Best in my opinion👍
Dope 944
This is Javier from insta LETS GOOO MAN
Keep it going brother and i would suggest making a Patrion. For behind the scenes and maybe patrion only projects like how tom refurb does his channel
Then the FC came out and destroyed it. Lol. Just kidding I love this car its awesome
@@coulsonmccullough7699 I actually love Mazda. I’m curious what the 944 Turbo and FC Turbo II look like head to head on track
@@BudgetExotics I love them both, I do love how they both came out at about the same time and are super similar and also very different platforms that do the same thing very well
Great detailed and inspirational video! How did you learn all that? Is there a good repairing manual for this car? Liked, subscribed)
@@FeniXonoK thank you so much for the feedback! I learned most of it online. I really appreciate the support for my channel. @NC944er is another creator that is very knowledgeable and works on the 944. He has amazing videos that have served me very well. There are a few other online sources for these cars. I’ll have to make a video or two about resources you can use.
@@BudgetExoticsAlready subbed to this one haha. Was it a certain Porsche forum or something?
@@FeniXonoK it wasn’t sorry. It was just one of his videos I saw a while ago
Hey man are you a mechanic or is it all available on yt?
Thanks for posting!
its poorrrrrchhhheeee not porshaaaaa
W project, currently have a 1984 944 myself 🫡
dark plugs = too rich white plugs = too lean reddish white = good.
Solid content man! I really like the rebuild so far! Gonna follow 🎉🔥
@@kenzovts8885 thank you so much for supporting
what the fuck do you mean AI recommended torque rating? use a god damn user manual, you're going to break something doing that
1 and 4 looked caked in carbon but 2and 3 looked fine
Piston Recoil Spring is getting weak on 4 and 1
Love the on beat torque sequence.
No way bro uses AI, just go and ask a professional mechanic 😭🙏
Modern day "AI" is literally a more direct wikipedia that has larger data base even for everyday things. I'd say it's advice is on the same level as a car forum/reading a manual.
Right to left, 1: rich, 2: good, 3: slightly lean and some leakage, 4: also rich
Did you just say AI?? How stupid are you to trust AI which is known to not he reliable. Terrible.
You do you bud
Great editing man
Im very concerned for your choice of information. Never use AI for information, unless it's on school or something other than a car.
@@nverbenbetter3455 must have got lucky this time
For the love of your car, sir, LOOK UP THE SPECS FOR THAT VEHICLE!!! Never trust AI because if that information gets conflated with any other car, the consequences could spell disaster for you.
@@brandonhanes8693 haha don’t worry I double checked
Bro is not chrisfix
1 and 4 have build up either oil or carbon (probably getting too much fuel but worst case bad pistonrings but very unlikely as your compression was consistent and not head gasket as the ones next to them are fine)
Blinker fluid low
Spark plugs have a crush seal, 120° after it feels snug.
Common thing on these are reference signal sensor for cam and crank, can cause a no start or die, I would probably do a fuel filter and fuel pump, should to a timing belt and balance shaft belt with new tensioners and pulleys. Also look at the ignition cap and rotors common for those to wear out.
1 and 4 are running rich
instructions unclear, did this on my diesel, now the gauge is scattered across the neighbors lawn
I see you messed up on the spark plug step
Personally prefer Castrol classic 20w50 in mine, apparently it has better detergents to help clean the engine if you don’t rebuild it more frequently, but if you do rebuild it frequently the liquimoly high zinc and valve line zr1 is a better option
i dont know how it is with old porsches but on early 2000s fords you can hold the throttle down and it cuts fuel, easier than tracking down a fuse imo
@@alexmcclellan7049 dang that’s cool
Old Porsche engine? Riiiiight..😂
@@imtrashbmx8834 I think it’s actually Audis design haha. The project was passed around a couple companies before production
@@BudgetExoticsits a vw engine if its the stock engine
@@Ambrose4k I was wrong it was not Audis design. The Porsche 924 used the VW Bus engine. The 944 was Porsches further development of the project and used a Porsche designed engine. That I4 water cooled engine continued to be improved upon bringing the turbo and s motors in the later years.
Highly recommend amsoil 10w40. It’s all I use in my old SX and 85 MR2s
Keep an eye out on your plugs, 2 of them looks really good and 2 of them seems like running a little rich(dark carbon deposits)
Can you explain that
Too much fuel. Could have been oil, but the compression is good so the rings and head gasket are fine
I once cracked my oil pan and power steering hose after landing in a huge pothole. I used the slick 50 additive and I believe that was how I made it home 5 miles away without oil. My late dad was a mechanic and had taught me very young. Under the Porsche I went under his direction on a Bronx street corner We removed the cross member in order to replace the oil pan. The power steering hose was a easy fix.
Can't wait for part 6
taking the time to change oil and not compression test first is wild imagine wasting money for the oil and filter all to find out a cylinder is weak and need engine tore apart to rebuild
@@chodyfoster_ with how long the car has sat I didn’t want it to be cranking over on bad oil and risk damaging the internals. FCP also has a lifetime replacement on there products including oil so not a big cost risk. Fortunately the compression tested good. Unfortunately I used the recommended economy spec so I’ll have to switch the oil again anyway to drive the way it’s supposed to be driven😂
Is it an 6 inline or what kind of engine does it have just curios
@@micahelijaheguia3671 it looks really long and big but it’s actually an I4. I believe it was actually an Audi designed motor and then Porsche finished the creation
@@BudgetExotics For years It's been said to be half of a 928 engine. I never looked into this. Have you?
Liqui Moly is king, also Amsoil is great too. The only two I trust for European cars. For my Hondas it’s always Rotella 😊
Send me a car to Germany pls
Why is zinc good for old engines? Ive not heard this information before.
@jodiunger9425 had a really good comment on this post about why. Basically the zinc helps make up for the unleaded gas we use today. Back in the day old car used leaded gas and it helped lubricant the engine.
Got to drive a 944s2 few years back, and damn was that thing quick off the line. Handled like it was on rails and acceleration was nuts. I use to own a 928s as well in manual too.
@@Timbo_Slice23 unfortunately I don’t have that S2 Motor but it will sure be quick once the car is built up
