Raising Our Expectations: Practical Actions for a Better Academia
Description:
In this session, we’ll introduce the premise of our recent book, Higher Expectations: How to Survive Academia, Make It Better for Others, and Transform the University. We argue that although universities are broken in many ways, we can raise our expectations for the conditions of working, learning, and sharing knowledge, and contribute to meaningful change. Our aim is to offer a practical guide to navigating academia for people who want to improve their own work lives and create better conditions for everyone. In our talk, we’ll share some examples of everyday actions as well as some of the bigger, “What if?” ideas we can collectively work toward. The session will include a sh...

The grandchildren of immigrants often don’t speak their grandparents’ language anymore, which represents a huge loss to families and to the nation’s diversity. In addition, we don’t do a great job of ...

I situate these reflections against the backdrop of institutional initiatives towards “decolonization,” “indigenization,”...
