Hades - Fresh File: First Run 101
Welcome to First Run 101! This is going to be a series of guide videos dedicated to helping you learn everything you'll need to know to start speedrunning the Fresh File/First Run category in Hades. We're going to go over information I've learned in my own attempts, as well as knowledge gathered by our community and top runners. This part of the series goes over basic information, including the standard attack combo and sword mechanics, the build we're looking for, and some general decision-making tips. If you have any questions or corrections, please feel free to comment!

First speedrun with Hera... It's not fast and I'm not super proud, but something has to be my first upload.
Good stuff
This video was an absolute GOD-SEND, I could not find any other tutorials on this even three years later, you deserve way more. -Your 15th Subscriber.

Right, so, uh, avid fresh filer here, with probably 200+ run 1 clears by now. While this video is not exactly new and gives a good overview on the run and some of the things to pay attention to, I still found important to note some things which I find to be incorrect / inaccurate (or which I did not hear you talk about, but were within the scope of the video). Though while I am going to point out a few things, I still want to say first and foremost that you cover all of the basics to get people started on the run with some tidbits of knowledge. On another note, Sophie (AKA "SofPog") has published her own freshfile guide on SRC between the time of you releasing this video and me coming across it today. I definitely recommend everyone reading this to take a look at it, it goes into a lot of detail for just about everything. Also, I will specify for every part how much it is related to going fast vs related to clearing consistency. (Tags that specify the amount of speed involved: "speed", "hybrid", "consistency") 1. Mechanics: Empty-dashing: HYBRID An empty-dash is an attack followed by a dash. This is tech exclusive to Merciful End, which allows the player to finish off weak enemies - such as unarmored eyeballs in elysium - faster than they otherwise could using the full combo, and are also a safer way to fight the bosses. Empty-dashes allow you for instance to not need to commit to using your special, out of which you could easily be hit (this can be important in the dad-fight, unless you're a god at FreshFile like Nitrostarch, Retrospektre, Sophie, or Vorime, who can do the combo without ever stopping because of permanent microadjustments. Don't ge me started on heroes and the final boss though, as that would require a full 10 page essay to cover . Pseudo-slides: SPEED Originally found by the speedrunner named "pseudo", this movement tech allows the player to move a tiny bit faster on straightaways, assuming it is executed perfectly. A pseudo-slide is done by doing a delayed dashstrike, then dashing again (since the dash will have refreshed by then) just as the dashstrike is about to slow zagreus to a halt. This can shave up to half a second in chamber 1, for instance (FFC1 wr is 3.49 by Pseudo, unofficial category). When to use thrusts: HYBRID Imagine you're at a billiard table playing a game of pool. Well, now imagine certain balls are lighter than others, and therefore will be propelled faster than others. The way you would hit multiple targets with one thrust would be by making sure at least two of your targets are lined upm relatively close to each other. Make sure ro thrust the lighter target (in tartarus that would be [numbskulls for FF Hell Mode players], witches, thugs. In order or "lightness") into the heavier target (thugs, louts. In order of "lightness"). Doing this will maximize your chance to get bodyslams. This means, in C2, you essentially want to use one thrust to push the thug that spawns last into the thug that spawned earlier on wave two, and on the last wave thrust one of the witches from the bottom left side of the room into the thug that spawns too. The other way around if you get unlucky spawns. 2. Build / decisionmaking: HYBRID Positive Outlook is a scam: Not only does this boon require you to take damage to activate (which as you know is not something you want to use anyways), but it is also pommable (which reduces your attack-pom and Impending Doom-pom chances). Nothing good to say about this boon. Brilliant Riposte is good: CONSISTENCY I may be a bit biased here because Divine Protection is my favorite boon in this game, but there's a valid reason for that. In Fresh File and High Heat specifically, survivability is crucial. You regenerate close to nothing, and have low health the entire run. If you are looking for a slow but comfortable clear, which is what I suspect most people attempting the category wish to do, going survival over damage can be a solid choice. Divine protection essentially allows you to cheese any fight, as long as you are willing to dodge attacks for that duration of time. It can also be worthwhile going for if your damage is not exactly great and you need something to help you live. Sure, it practically divides your merciful end chances by two, but what if you do not have ares in the pool yet, in the middle of asphodel, and do not want to go down the rabbithole that is resetting for a build? Then taking Brilliant Riposte may be a valid play. This goes without even mentioning, of course, that everywhere before elysium, Brilliant Riposte actually can do a non-negligible amount of damage. "Drive-by" cores, and cast-filling: Imagine the following. You get forced to take an artemis boon and get offered: her attack, her special, her cast. Note that you have no other boons at this point. The correct move is to reset of course, as you do not want to keep her around since the beginning, risking her ruining all shops. But now imagine you have some epic ares attack level 3 by this point (because that occasionally happens), and she offers you her special, her cast, and exit wounds. In this case, you would either go the conventional way, and take exit wounds... or you could attempt something sneaky. In fresh file specifically, if you have any empty core boon slots remaining, every boon you pick up will offer you AT LEAST one of the cores you are missing. This means, by filling the cast with artemis, you have guaranteed that any athena boon you pick up will always offer you the special, which you are missing. From there, you can do whatever you wish: either keep the cast around to highroll Deadly Reversal + Merciful End, or sell it off for the coins and higher Merciful End chances from athena. Other than that, your video and pinned comment combined compact the basics well 👍
Thank you so much for writing an entire essay for a few people to see but it is super helpful and I will definitley be referencing this (along with the video). 👍
thanks for the vid! looking forward for the next vid ☺️✨
Thanks for the guide!
Hey, thanks for the video. With the recent release of Hades on consoles, I've decided to attempt my own fresh file, first run. This guide really helped me out, so if you ever get around to making more, I think it would be some effort worth spent if you think there's anything more you can add. Hopefully your runs have been well since the publishing of this video, cheers!
Great video, going to check out some more of your videos. This deserves more views, I would recommend using Promosm to help grow your channel.
Great video, keep it up! You could use PromoSM it’s the best way to grow your channel quickly!
Hey everyone! Vorime has pointed out some information that I thought was fairly important, so I'll be pinning that here. 1. Delayed Dash Strikes: I missed a few really key tips here. First, regular dash-strikes reduce the i-frames on the dash, but using a delayed dash-strike preserves them. Delaying your dash-strike, then, is super useful for dodging an attack and then immediately getting some damage out. Second, the attack from the dash-strike doesn't need to come out in the same direction as the dash. You can change your movement angle directly after the dash and get the dash-strike to hit in a different direction. 2. Trap Damage and Body Slam: Trap damage is super helpful in First Run, since you have such relatively low damage yourself. It's worth making a conscious effort to trigger traps to damage enemies, and part of that is going to be getting comfortable with being in the trap radius on explosive barrels. Don't be embarrassed taking damage from those, I do all the time. You can also use your thrust (3rd attack in the sword's basic attack combo) or your special to knock enemies into each other for extra body slam damage. Line these up and begin the attack combo as waves are spawning in, and boom, extra DPS. This can be tricky, and I'm really bad at it, but it is helpful. 3. Poms: These are gonna want to be put into your Doom boons. Generally, that's going to mean Curse of Agony, but occasionally Impending Doom will provide more damage. That'll depend on boon rarity and level, so just keep an eye out. Poms are pretty important, moving any rarity Curse of Agony to level 2 gives more Doom damage than the next higher rarity boon. It can be helpful to avoid grabbing too many pommable boons, so that you can hit Curse of Agony/Impending Doom more often. 4. Athena Room: I'll be going over this in the next video in greater detail, but the wave compositions for the Athena Room are as follows: a. 1 thug b. 2 thugs, middle of room, and right next to each other c. 3 witches, two in bottom-left, 1 top-right (kill top-right first if feasible, then bottom-left to be in position for final wave) d. 3 witches as before, and 1 thug in middle (clear moving from bottom-left toward door) If there's anything else you think I've missed, please feel free to mention it!
