John Cleese has said that he wrote this monologue exactly as he remembered it from school. The joke is not just that these rules are nonsensical. The actual joke is that this was real.

Is that the "patriarchal" "elite" "all-men" schooling that feminists so much wanted to tear down or become part of?

One of the reasons prep schools and private schools - boarding schools in fact in this case - turn out such successful men is precisely due to stuff like this. Can you cope? Can you cope with bewildering instructions like this. Can you swim? When no teachers will be around to stop you drowning.

That is just the sort of stupid rules and procedures that we had at my idiot school.
