    Might have to report this video for overtly sensual content, lol. How are drying/dried sticks stored before they are worked?

    • @takaristicks
      @takaristicks 18 дней назад

      The sticks are hung in a well-ventilated place with the handle downwards, and this for 2 to 3 years depending on the thickness of the wood.

    Abrasives are under- rated. Many people don't like sanding...but give them 36 grit, or a rasp & look out, it can be fun when you see your progress.

    There are so many complicated videos about woodwork and stick making out there. But the most satisfying and reassuring versions always come down to a few basic tools, some oil/lacquer, and some patience. This was delightful, sir. Thank you.

    Well done. I made my first shillelagh but had no blackthorn. Used maple and it turned out okay. Not as nice as what you made. The ancients were said to butter the sticks and put them in a stovepipe to create the dark rot resistant finish. Amazing how they improvised.

      Yes, we can still learn a lot from the past and often it is still the best.

    The hardest part I think, is seasoning (waiting for the wood to dry out), which takes ages. I made my first shillelagh this month. Not as nice as yours's but I'm happy with it.

      Hello John, yes it is indeed very important to work with well dried wood, it takes at least 2 to 3 years to get it dry? enjoy your blackthorn walking stick, greetz Philippe

    I saw at the historic Spanish Mission San Luis Obispo museum in California one of these blackthorn walking sticks. It was made by coppicing the blackthorn bush with a mature center stalk as the staff with thin coppiced growths that were braided around the center stalk while green. Then the whole thing was havested and dried. So instead of a blackthorn walking stick this one had whip like growths braided around. It looks vicious with all those long sharp thorns!

      Hello, yes I have also seen pictures of such a walking stick, it looks cool. Maybe I will make one too. You can also let them grow like this , but it takes years. you have to count on about 3 years to weave new branches around a suitable stick to grow and then another 2 to 3 years to dry before you can start. so we are talking about a 6 year project, thanks for your response, Philippe

    How long does it take on average to make one walking stick?

    • @old_timey_prospector
      @old_timey_prospector 16 дней назад

      A skilled stick maker will be able to do several per day. But a beginner will be able to make one over the weekend. It's really mostly rasp work.
